PORT o' CALL.... Chesapeake Beach!

Well HERE we are!
Welcome to Port! So glad you could sail with us today!!!

Alright Captain! Just back that bad boy right on in here!
Yea... that's it! Whoop... little to the left! PORT! PORT!
It'll be a tight squeeze, but you ought to be okay!
We're not used to boats quite that big in these parts!

Chesapeake Beach is just a sleepy little town ... the operative word being little... so we will actually be touring a few sites in the whole of Calvert County ... which is also a sleepy little county! If you want to venture further out to the BIG cities like Washington, DC; Annapolis, MD; and Baltimore you will have to wait for the NEXT cruise ship to come through! But for now... welcome to the neighborhood!

As you depart the ship and look to your left, you will see our lovely new Chesapeake Beach Hotel & Spa. This building has single handedly brought "class" to Calvert County! Located right on the Chesapeake Bay, every room has a view, and though I have never stayed here - rumor has it they are booked a full year in advance! - I hear the Spa services can not be beat! So... if you are planning a little "do nothing" vacation and you want to include a "Spa Day" in the plan, THIS is your place!!! However, you should plan to pay approximately 4X the price of a spa experience anywhere else nearby! ;)

So, what can we find to get into today? Well...it's March... and we're at the beach! (this was a great idea... huh?) It's not so bad... we can...

a.) stroll the beach, maybe find some sharks teeth.
b.) walk the boardwalk, enjoying the fresh air.
c.) nose around the antique shops
d.) shop some of the little beachy stores - yep, a few are open this time of year!

In about 4-6 weeks that beach and that boardwalk will be jam-packed with folks. But for now, we have it pretty much to ourselves!

Another option (if you haven't had enough on board) is to stop in one of the restaurants that have slots!

At Trader's you can choose between slots and bingo...
I think the biggest one is a quarter... we're big spenders in this town!

You know, FOOD is really what this town is all about! And if the true story is to be told, crabs are really what this town is all about! Well... fish too... but mostly crabs! This is a crabbing community! So, as you wander around the town looking for something to eat, keep in mind that our house specialties revolve around

Crabs!
For many people (myself included) steamed crabs is THE WAY to eat 'em!

Crab cakes!
Hubby likes his on a sandwich.
I'd rather not have bread interfere with the taste of my crab!

Crab Soup!
Maryland Crab Soup or Cream of Crab ... either one will do!

Crab Dip!
With fresh warm bread right out of the oven...
Isn't it amazing I've lost ANY weight at all???

Of course, if you have time to swing down to Solomon's Island and eat at the Pier, then you just order the crab pretzel for an appetizer -- and don't even worry about dinner! The pretzel will fill you up for about 3 days! (and yes, for those of you not into seafood, we do have just about every other imaginable fare you can think of... but by choosing the Japanese Steak House you sort of miss the point of being here! LOL!)

As we head inland a bit, I'd just like you to take notice of certain items around town. They are Calvert County's answer to the Cow Parade! These are our Seahorses By The Bay ... even though all of them are not "right by" the bay! ( a few are ... ) There are 25 in all... these are just a few of my favorites!

Now I'd like to take you to a new little place I've only JUST discovered myself! (and that's not so bad, because it only just opened last Fall!) And it's almost impossible to believe - but we now have our very own WINERY! I stopped in there a weekend or two ago, and I was sO impressed! Here we are... Friday's Creek Winery! C'mon inside!

This is the wine tasting room. They actually rent it out and cater luncheons and other events, as well as having their own wine tasting events! It's very warm (cozy warm) and comfortable in here! But the really neat part about this winery, is the art gallery upstairs! C'mon!

Oh wait! Before we go up - look! This is the room that stores all the wine barrels! Can you see the little air locks on top? (i don't think you can...) But they allow the carbon dioxide to escape without letting oxygen back into the barrel. Very important wine stuff! The owner was telling me that a while back these barrels were fermenting so rapidly that it often sounded like the fish tank section of a pet store in there! gurgle gurgle gurgle! (well i thought it was funny...) LOL! Alright... on up to the gallery. I love how they've put some "teaser" art going up the steps ...
Ahhhhh... before we go in, look down here! Those are the big vats that the wine is brewed in! Right now they are working on 550 Gallons of Old Vine Zinfindel - which just happens to be the kind I bought to go with our Corned Beef and Cabbage supper for St. Patrick's Day! It was very good too! And I love that they've had a local artist design all the artwork for the wine labels! I should have taken pictures of them... but I didn't! Maybe next time! Okay... at last we're here! The art gallery!

Everything displayed in here is the work of local artists, and they in turn, take turns working here. Of course, they did not want me to take any close up pictures of the art - and I can understand that! I thought they were being very generous to allow me to take these shots! So... what d'ya say we go sample a little taste...
... and be on our way!
(this is that red zinfandel I bought!)

Our next stop in my exciting town will be Annmarie Gardens... though again... it's March... and certainly not the BEST time to be visiting the gardens... I'll be sure to do a better post about it in May or June when the gardens are in their glory! But this is a fun little place, with paths winding all through the woods and gardens and sometimes the most unexpected little surprises! Many art shows are held here during the spring and summer months, culminating with the ArtsFest in September each year! ArtsFest is huuuuge and draws artisans from all over the East Coast to show and sell their things. Most of these shows have zero "crafters" ... sometimes a few - for the children - to do hands on type things. But I love to go and see what the artists have done! The paintings, drawings and sculptures and pottery and glass works! Oh, I LOVE it!!! They also hold art classes at the Garden -- both indoors and out. And in December the entire garden is decorated in lights!

It is SO pretty! But today there is nothing going on in the garden, and the flowers are not blooming and you will have to use your WILD imaginations to put things in their proper place!!!

This is Tribute To The Oyster Tonger... it celebrates the pride, character, and integrity of the watermen... whom our county relies on! In the hot summer months you can often find children wading in the pond! ;)

Several pieces have been gifts to us from the Hirshorn Gallery in Washington, DC. My Amanda was very impressed with this Monumental Standing Cardinal. I think she wanted to take him home with us! I must agree that he would be an impressive display in the front yard!

Some of you might recognize this from a Wordless Wednesday a while back. This is a little arena in the Gardens. It is used for plays and concerts and picnics and a resting spot. If the weather is warm and welcoming, there's usually someone using this space!

I'm so sorry that I didn't have any fabulous old history, or architecture to share with you! Our lives are fairly simple down here in the country, and most of our celebrations are in honor of either the tabacco farmers (I'm not goin' there!) or the watermen. But the Chesapeake Bay area is sO beautiful ... I hope you've enjoyed seeing my little piece of it!

Oh! And I took the liberty of getting everyone a souvenir from the area!
I hope you like it!
A Crabby Maryland t-shirt!

Thanks for visiting my port on Lifecruiser's Cyber Cruise! If you'd like to board ship and sail with us to the next port, just see Lifecruiser at the ticket gate!

What are you talking about? Sleepy little town, well you certainly did an excellent job advertising it in that case!

Oh, I love that crab dishes look even though I'm normally not that fond of crab, but these ones can make me change my mind just by the look! *drooling*

And a checkered seahorse?!!! What more could I demand??

The winery looked like a place I would have to investigate much more further.....

And Art and Garden too! I love both!

...and I haven't even mentioned the Spa hotel....or the beach yet!!!!

Mama, I'm in heaven!!!!!

I was left in Barcelona, when my mom took ill, but the lovely helicopter just dropped me off up on the top deck and I was able to get into your town...are we going to a millenary shop???

By Blogger Jennifer, at 3/24/2007 12:56 AM

*singing* "Melli gave me a new T-Shirt... and it´s such a cool one I love love LOVE it!" *DoingTheEndZoneDance*

Holy crab! *LOL* Thanks so much for taking us to Chesapeake Beach! Your part of the world is simply beautiful! Aaaah, look at the deliciously prepared crabs (Do is see some wooden hammers there? How handy!)

I fell head over feet in love with the "flamingo seahorse" - and I realize I forgot to mention the painted bears living in Berlin city =)

Chesapeake Beach... a pleasant place to go on a vacation - and you LIVE there. Melli, you are blessed *smile*

May I have another Zinfandel, please?

By Blogger Sanni, at 3/24/2007 5:18 AM

Oh this is so great!!! *wiping brow*....."Phew....I thought sure 'nough, when I fell asleep on the upper berth last night, that you'd take us over the Chesapeake Toll Bridge to Ocean City"----You know me and bridges. I was positive I'd have to drink a whole lot real EARLY this morning to build up courage....well, not necessarily 'courage'...more like stupor!!

Wonderful port o' call Melli.

By Blogger Hootin'Anni, at 3/24/2007 5:34 AM

Melli you did a wonderful job ! It's so interesting to see where you live ! At least now I know ! I even had to look up first where Maryland was exactly ! What I didn't know was that it's at the sea, lol ! (I mostly slept through Geography) Seems to be a beautiful place and you are so lucky you have the beach nearly in front of your house door ! I should sell some of my cat portraits there !
I told today how I tried to explain a "Cyber Cruise" to my friend yesterday while we had lunch together ! Not easy. And I also found a picture of either Renny or TorAa.

By Blogger Gattina, at 3/24/2007 6:23 AM

Great tour and you town looks very interesting. I'll give the crabs a wide berth though... Vegetarian here!

By Blogger Caledonia, at 3/24/2007 7:01 AM

Wow! Chesapeake Beach is wonderful! You really did an awesome job, Melli!

It really is such a sleepy, artsy, cozy, crabby, winery, beach-keen spa town!

I've just stuffed myself with crab, visited the art galleries, played the slots (hey I won 20 bucks), bought my self a crabby T-shirt (a special one for me - see it on my blog), a bottle of pink zinfandel and now I'm headin' to the beach. Care to join me anyone?

I've got plastic wine glasses for the wine which we can hide under the bags and I brought some extra blankets in case we need them (Do you think we will, Melli?). Don't forget your hat and shades~! Oh, and if you come later, you'll recognize us all by our crabby T-shirts, but Melli says there's not too many people at the beach right now so you should find us in any case.

I can't think of a better way to spend a Saturday than a day at the beach with a bottle of wine and some fun(ny) friends!

Oooooowww... just remembered, I'm off to find my flip flops!

By Blogger Irish Church Lady :), at 3/24/2007 7:01 AM

Oh my gosh you are such a natural giving that tour and showing off town. You just want to be there and I will be some day. Living in the mid west I have never made my way east unless you count Florida but I do not think so.

I am not a seafood fan but I do enjoy some of it as long as it is fresh. Now crabs, I would not know how to eat those but it sounds like what you and the hubby do would work perfectly. Now I am really, really hungry.

Not much of a wine drinker but I had no idea there was a red zinf, I only knew about white.

Awesome tour of an awesome town. I love it and thank you so much.

By Blogger barman, at 3/24/2007 7:01 AM

Thanks for the wonderful tour. You make me want to visit there. I definitely would like some of that great seafood!
Keep reporting, I am living vicariously through you!

By Blogger Jane, at 3/24/2007 7:50 AM

Melli, I'm not on the cruise (as you know), but I certainly have enjoyed reading your posts about it.

You did a magnificent job introducing everyone to your area of the country. Now when are you having the Lazy Daisy Luncheon girls over for crabs???

Have a super weekend and blessings to you.

By Blogger Beckie, at 3/24/2007 8:32 AM

Chesapeake beach! What a nice place! I think will have good time today! Beginning the day with a spa experience! Do you think we'll find a beautiful masseur, after the spa! Now a small walk on the beach and if I find sharks teeth, i will keep them as pleasant memory of the cruise! He, he now I'm ready to eat the specialties of crab!! and taste the chesapeake wine! As you know french love wine! In fact there two France: the France of beer (north) and the France of south (wine)!
Now we want to have a look on the artists! What would the life without the artists! They take us in the world of dreams! But aren't we noble dreamers in the cyber cruise!!!?
Thanks for all Méli! Yes you're right Chesapeake bay is a beautiful place! What a nice day we have!

By Anonymous claudie, at 3/24/2007 9:05 AM

(I helped Claudie out by posting the coment above for her, she left that on my blog having problems to submit it to yours)

So, here you are, enjoying yourselves I hear loudly on the beach!

Give me a hand some one, with all those bags with yummy stuff to us all. They were the real reason for me to walk like a crab....

All (!) the Crab dishes and several boxes with zinfandel, so let's have a Crab Feast!

So, do we have any Crab songs?

By Anonymous Captain Crabby Lifecruiser, at 3/24/2007 9:37 AM

Oh goodness! I've spent the morning trying to figure out HOW to comment IN your comments -- but to no avail!

LC- I'm setting up the volleyball net now! The grill is going for burgers and brats and I have 5 BUSHELS of steamed crabs! Everybody grab a mallot and I'll teach you how to eat 'em!

Becci - the slot machines are part of the "diet plan" -- you lose the grocery money playing slots and then can't afford to eat! Works for me!

Jen - Glad you love the t-shirt - and the crabs!!!

Sanni - The Winery is holding a reservation for our group this evening for a wine & cheese party! So go a little easy on the beer with the crabs -- or not - as you see fit! :)

Anni - no bridges required on this trip -- Unless we go down to Solomon's -- there might be a little bridge to get to the island -- hardly noticeable at all! Sleep peacefully, but DO enjoy the Crab Beer and Wine!!!

Gattina - I would almost kill for waterfront property - but lacking the million$ required for that, I am SURE happy to live this close! Maybe if I EVER remember to buy a lottery ticket I will have the fortune to WIN and realize my dream! Or I might win the slots one day - eh? (of course, I understand you have to PLAY them to win too!)

Caledonia - fear not! We have plenty of fresh vegies to toss on the grill! You will be WELL taken care of in the food department!

ICL - sleepy IS us! And if we're not, we have a few more glasses of wine and that does the trick! We roll up the streets about 8 PM around here! But we can move our party back to the boat then... and wear the night out!

Barman! - So glad you stopped in for this port! We are having a good time for sure! I have to agree that mid-west seafood leaves MUCH to be desired! The funny thing about seafood is that it requires WATER nearby!!! Not to worry if you're not into wine -- BEER is made for eating crabs with! (so I hear ... I stick with Pepsi!)

Jane -- You are more than welcome to visit - ANY TIME!!!

Beckie - you know I think that's a GRAND idea! When do y'all wanna come up?

Claudie - I'm sO glad to hear you tried the Spa Day! DO tell - HOW was it? I have a whole jar of sharks teeth somewhere around the house! We've been collecting them for many years now... but when I went looking for it to take a picture - it has been "misplaced"... UGH! LOL! I hope you found some GOOD ones though!

LC - Crab songs??? Hmmm... crab songs??? Noooooo ... I think about the closest we can get to that might be a little Jimmy Buffett!

By Blogger Melli, at 3/24/2007 11:06 AM

I enjoyed this lovely tour. Lovely photos! I love the colorful seahorses. They are so cute and very colorful.

I'm fond of eating crabs. I miss having crab cakes. Too bad Italianni's phased out their crab cakes from their menu. It used to be my favorite.

Take care!

By Blogger Heart of Rachel, at 3/24/2007 12:36 PM

What? No Photo blog today? I came over expecting to see what you did for EMPTY and was very disappointed!! Hm!! I forgot your were cruising instead!! Okay I will let you off this Saturday I guess.
Thanks for taking time out of your cruise to stop by and see me...Sandy

By Blogger It's a FLIP-FLOP World, at 3/24/2007 1:27 PM

Melli -- does the tourist board know about you? Becareful, or they'll be knocking on your door and asking you to volunteer your time. You just did an excellent job showcasing Chesapeake Bay. I want to come visit!

By Anonymous Quilly, at 3/24/2007 3:00 PM

Hmmm Beach and seafood - perfect for a Norwegian Vikings! I want that Crabby t-shirt!
And the vine tasting - hmmmmm - Zinfindel, one of my favorite!
Melli; Thanks for a wonderful stay at Chesapeake Beach - your such a wonderful host!
You are all welcome to Rome tomorrow:-)

By Blogger RennyBA, at 3/24/2007 6:04 PM

Ms. Melli,

Now you are talking my language!! WOW - anything with crabs is for ME! Everything looks scrumptious! And that zinfandel - oh my!! I've died and gone to heaven! Wonderful tour....you are quite a good traveler!

I thoroughly enjoyed myself today.

Hugz, dear lady and have a wonderful weekend!

By Blogger Carol, at 3/24/2007 6:35 PM

We can count the empty stage in the round as the photo hunt.... gorgeous pictures.

By Blogger srp, at 3/24/2007 6:44 PM

That crab pretzel and some red wine and the ocean waves sound perfect! I've never been there, but hope to some day. I live a couple of states below you. :-)

By Anonymous 0cean Lady, at 3/24/2007 6:52 PM

Those crab cakes are making me hungry! Surfed in via Photo Hunters. Cheers from Toronto!

By Anonymous Sue, at 3/24/2007 7:25 PM

Thanks x mellions for this relaxed day with such a mellicious food - I enjoyed every second of it!!!!

Just my kind of a place to go for some recharging :-)

I hope there is still left SOME crabs in town and I bet that calm will lower itself over the town since we're leaving.

I've set sails again!!!

PS. I had to announce next port already now, because it's time for me to head to the Captains quarter!

It's 04:00 am over here suddenly, since we changed the clocks this night to summertime.... 1 hour disappeared in the air.

C U in Rome :-))

By Anonymous Captain Yawn Lifecruiser, at 3/24/2007 9:07 PM

It's really all been said...

so, just, Thanks Melli
:-)
Della

By Blogger DellaB, at 3/24/2007 9:54 PM

You really know how to celebrate. i bet this was the best stop. the food looks scrunptious, the sea horses by the bay are delightful, and it is very welcoming.

By Blogger Barbara, at 3/24/2007 11:08 PM

Oh Melli! This is just what the doctor ordered. A slow & sleepy town to unwind and decompress from the frenetic pace of day-to-day life here atm. Thank you for the crabs - they bring such pece & comfort to my stomach, especially when it's steamed. All i need now is a real spa to soak up into & wind down for the day. Who knows - i might get lucky and have one in the next house we move into - who knows.

I have been loving your adorable hats, the white puffy one for Alaska is my fave atm. I'll have mine in the colour black!

In the meanwhile - my fingers need to get really busy with preparation of designing a hat for my son's Easter hat parade at school, so i'll be using The Crazy Hat parade on March 28th as my deadline (as this will prevent me from encountering the last-minute-rush syndrome). Look forward to seeing you there! ;)

Thank you again for the lovely tour!

By Anonymous aka R'acquel, at 3/25/2007 4:41 AM

I am boycotting any tshirts sporting dead crabs..they are so much prettier alive
BTW We used to live on DeForest Drive.
My brother still lives on 19th

By Blogger Last Minute Lyn, at 3/25/2007 8:04 AM

Wow! You gave quite the tour there. Even though I'm not on the tour, i might take one of those crabby shirts.

By Blogger Carmen, at 3/26/2007 8:03 AM

Wow, loved the back that boat part. We just did that last weekend, poles and all. What a great job. :)
