Cheap Entertainment!
I was visiting Wystful1 this morning and reminiscing about string tricks we would do when we were children, and it got me thinking about another favorite toy! This one was only slightly more costly than the piece of string, and yet still provided hours and hours of fun and competition amongst siblings and friends! Which toy? Why the YO YO of course!
several years ago...
back when OUR kids were addicted to yoyos!
Now, when I was a kid we just had plain ol' wooden yoyo's. They came in your basic colors; I guess a few might have had special designs painted on them, but for the most part they were just your dime store variety yoyo. But we did a LOT of tricks with those yoyos! I can remember being able to do Walk The Dog and Around The World. I also VIVIDLY remember NOT being able to do Rock The Baby, which my older sister COULD do! Really, I think I was a bit of a Yoyo clutz... but I tried! And I had fun trying! Yoyo skills were not nearly so easy to develop as "string trick" skills!
When my kids entered into the world of yoyos things had changed ... and PLENTY! Today's yoyos are not only made of state-of-the-art high tech polyurethane plastics in EVERY color of the rainbow (and some colors not even included in the rainbow, i think!) having wicked designs built in, but they also have BEARINGS... and now they even have BRAINS! Of course with the new high tech designs also come bigger and better tricks - some of which I can't even imagine how they came up with! Check out Buddha's Revenge! You could NEVER do that with an old wooden yoyo! I'm just WOWWED!

Of course, you PAY for the POWER of the yoyo! The Power Brain XP will cost ya $12.95 American dollars! And if you want to go for one from the "Signature Series", you'll be layin' down $22 Whopperoos! However... you can still obtain a BASIC model for $2.95. It probably won't DO much though! Leave it to technology to make me feel cheated by a "cheap" yoyo! I might have to indulge in a Metallic Missile! Asking price? ONLY $29.95! Listen to this though ... "This elite bad boy is carefully crafted from anodized aircraft quality aluminum, sleeps comfortably on our Sandman Bearing System and features protective rubber rims." Rubber RIMS! How can I pass that up???

Melli..I just came from Wystful I and was talking about what kids do not do anymore and came over to see what you were talking about and now we are into YO-YO's..again my brother and I had those too...but only 1 or 2 of them. We did not have a lot of toys like the kids do today. We had to beg to get things. I remember having them and trying to do the tricks that you talked about but was not very good but like you it was fun to try. My dad used to make us slits and that was a lot of fun. We would get up again the side of the house and put them on and then take off hoping that we would not fall. We thougth we were so TALL!! smile!! Thanks for your encouraging words about our looking for a new home. I hate it but I know it is coming!!

As I questioned on Wystful's site, is it the kids or the parents that have changed?
Does anyone remember gymp? I could do this for hours http://www.bluemoon.net/~dotoran/the_projects3.htm

Ohhhh Penny! I LOVED gymp! We used to make all kinds of neat things -- my kids did that one summer too! (I introduced them too all the fun stuff!) I think the PARENTS have changed! (and the toys have changed) But mostly the parents -- who buy their kids every blasted thing that comes on the market -- and then let them spend 22 hours a day playing video games and watching TV! They are children... children do what children DO... WE are parents... as parents it's our job to MONITOR what the children do! My kids HAD video games too -- but they never spent more than about an hour in the morning and maybe another hour in the evening playing them! My kids always played outside the majority of the day. We did hopscotch and Mother May I and colored with sidewalk chalk and roller skated down MAIN STREET! Kids love to DO stuff... it's parents that buy mind garbage and let the kids have too much of it! *stepping down off my soapbox now... thanks!* Oh... my kids did GYMP too! And made loop potholders on the loop loom!

Oooops! I'm repeating myself! I shoulda gone back and read what I already said! LOL!

It's ok to say these things more than once. I'm so tired of people complaining that today's kids sit in front of the tv, play computer games, have no respect, all are medicated, on and on and on......
Hell, go outside....I don't think we went INSIDE unless it was meal time or had to use the bathroom. Why would a kid go inside? To do chores?? Do children even have chores anymore? I was a firm believer that my children were doing chores because I had soap operas to watch - LOL!

See, I am yo-yo retarded. I could never get it to work more than 3 or 4 times without the string getting all twisty. But then, I solved my rubik's cube by removing the stickers, so I guess I never claimed to be a toy genious. :)
