Ruby Tuesday... Modesty Revisited - (our answer) ... and STUFF!

Ruby Tuesdayis hosted by Mary, The Teach

Red Eyed Dragon!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So... how do WE explain "modesty" to a 4 year old?
LOL! Boy we had fun with that question yesterday! You guys are awesome! Sooooooo... ya wanna know how WE handled explaining modesty?
Well, I started out telling her that being modest is the opposite of bragging. Of course - then she said "what's bragging Nana?" -- THAT was when we realized HOW hard this was going to be! So Krysti said we should first teach what bragging IS - so that we could talk about what it's NOT! So it went sort of like this:
Amanda: Bragging is saying "I scored a goal at my game today! I scored a GOAL! I'm the BEST player on the TEAM!"
Luz: So, I shouldn't tell if I score a goal?
Nana: It's okay to SAY you scored a goal. If you just tell it as a fact, and don't make a big deal and claim to be the BEST PLAYER ON THE TEAM just because you scored a goal.
Luz looked puzzled.
Nana: Luz, it's okay to say it. You scored a goal and your proud of yourself. But if you say it like Mommy said it - that's bragging. If you just tell it and don't make a big deal - that's okay. Just say "I scored a goal today!" Then people will be very happy for you and say "That is GREAT Luz!!! Good job!!!" ... and you can be happy and smile BIG because you did something good! It's okay to do that and to be proud of yourself for it. But MODEST is if YOU don't say it at all. If you just wait until Mommy says "Luz scored a goal at her game today!" ... and then everyone will still say "Oh Luz! That's GREAT! Good job!" and you get all the glory!
Luz: Nana? What's the glory?
LOL!
Nana: The "glory" is when you are told you did a good job!
Luz: But what game?
ROFL!!!
Amanda: The pretend game that we just made up! The one where you scored the goal!
Luz: But I didn't score a goal...
LOL!
Ohhhhhh trying to explain abstract ideas to a 4 year old is just soooooooo much fun! We THINK she did understand in the end. But Barbara H. is definitely right -- the subject WILL come up again -- and eventually it will come up about physical behavior too! But for right now, we think we got the questioned answered okay.
Another fun one is always time. Not like in the hours on a clock -- but conceptual time. Yesterday, today and tomorrow are fairly easy.... but "in a little while" or "later" or "someday" or "ago"... I don't really remember MY kids EVER asking about these words! They just sort of "got it" over a period of time. But Luz is a word freak - and she asks! Boy, if she doesn't understand EXACTLY what you're saying the first time, she asks! And it has lead to some very interesting conversations!
Other STUFF!
Okay... I know some of you have noticed I've been a little distracted this week. It amazes me how WELL some of you know me! I was trying my best to keep blogging even when I really didn't feel like it -- but a few of you caught me anyway! Well... we've had some extended family stuff going on, and I have really had to give IT my attention, and in fact, I thought it was going to take me AWAY from you all - for quite awhile. But instead my eldest stepped up, and she is going in my place! And I don't know WHY we didn't think of it in the beginning - because it truly IS the perfect solution! But anyway -- without details - that was what was going on. And I know several of you missed me makin' the rounds to the blogs... I really DO apologize for that... but you know - there are just times when family - even extended family - comes WAY first!
In addition to that I have not gotten ANY more painting done -- I was working on projects if you recall - I finished one, and then life got crazy and I haven't finished the other one yet. Hopefully in the next day or two.
As for my friend, John -- he is still in a coma. They did do some tests this week and have determined that he has NO brain damage! With that said, I really REALLY believe that he WILL wake up! I think we just have to pray and understand that everything happens in God's time and not our own. And just because we don't understand WHY He needs John in a coma right now, doesn't mean He doesn't have a reason.... I know... lots of people think I'm nuts! I'm just tellin' ya what I believe! The doctors have said they will re-evaluate his condition at the end of the week.
And my BIG news??? I'm goin' on a TRIP! Ohhhhhh don't you just wanna KNOW where I am going? I am SO excited!!! Oh it's a BIG exciting trip!!! Well, it's big and exciting to me! I am going to WISCONSIN!!! I'm going to Neenah, Wisconsin!!! Aren't you excited? I know you want to come along with me! And you will! But we don't leave until April 20th! (that seems like such a looooong way away... especially since I've been planning this since OCTOBER!) I've just been bustin' to TELL though, and then JUST when I was getting ready to tell, it started lookin' like I was going to have to postpone it and go to Texas first! But like I said -- Amanda is going to Texas -- so now I'm back on for Wisconsin! Can you guess WHY I'm going to Wisconsin? Can you guess WHAT IN THE WORLD could possibly be important enough to me in Neenah, Wisconsin to convince me to drive 1000 miles to get there!? Well... I will tell you! It is the Wizard of Words himself! The Feeder of the Dragons. The Keeper of the Fortress! It is Dr. John HIMSELF! And his beautiful wife Betty!!! Yes indeed! I am going on an adventure! I am grabbing Mom and my suitcase, and we are heading into the land of Canasta and Saffron Buns! And if I'm very VERRRRRRRY blessed, I'll even get to spend a day in Pigeon Falls!!! Now.... do tell! What could POSSIBLY be more exciting than THAT!? I can't wait!!!
OH! And one LAST little bit of info! Our dear Ella - that little scamp! - has arrived in LAS VEGAS, BABY! She is staying with Kathy - a sweetheart of a gal, with a very interesting past (and probably present!) ... she used to be an elephant trainer/performer IN Vegas... and thus the reason why she wanted sO badly to host Ella! She also owns a MANY pound tortoise who Ella has become fast friends with... and ... above all... she NEVER had a blog before. She created one JUST for Ella -- so pleeeeeeease run over and visit her and check out the fun she is having with Ella! I think this may be a really good trip for Ella!
Believe It or Not... an Ella Tale
We went to visit some of Mom's relatives in Delaware...
Mom, Uncle Durante, and Ella
Of course... you know how it goes when you get together with family you haven't SEEN in awhile... They start telling old family stories -- especially if there's someone NEW to tell them to! And Ella is a fairly happy listener! She loves a good tale! So Uncle Durante, who is a real character, starts telling this absurd story from "days of yore" - about this dragon and how Great Great GREAT Uncle Shamus Dryndl had come across one of her eggs and took it home with him... there was a mighty battle over the baby dragon between Shamus and the Mama Dragon and well... you can imagine how UGLY it got -- and the Mama Dragon WON! (well of course she did -- Uncle Shamus was NO match for a DRAGON! It wasn't like he was magical or anything!) Poor Uncle Shamus... And so Ella asked... WHERE did this happen? And wouldn't ya know... Uncle Durante points down the street and says "oh just about a mile that way..." ... Well, don't you know our Ella is quite the archaeologist...
Do you knOw that Elephants can move quite QUICKLY when they want to? Uncle Grimbor didn't get to finish saying "Don't GO there - The dragon LIVES!" before she was out the door and GONE! (what do you mean you never HEARD of the Dreadful Dragon of Delaware? *rolls my eyes...* EVERYONE knows Delaware has a dragon! )
Well... by the time we got there, Ella had completely disappeared - into the woods like a chipmunk! I know... elephants ARE considerably larger than chipmunks -- but she disappeared! All WE saw was this sign...
Apparently Ella MISSED the sign as she went flying through!
... because she obviously disturbed the egg! ... *sigh*
The next thing she knew she heard a horrrrrrible ROOOOAR and she JUMPED halfway outta her skin and RAN for cover! There are not many places to hide from an angry dragon, but Ella came to a house in the woods! A darling little house built in a BIG ol' tree!
She knocked on the door!
(but she got no answer)
She climbed up to look in the window...
A light was ON!
She kept searching and searching...
Finally the owner came out...
Ella breathlessly explained what had happened...
but the troll man said NO!
She couldn't stay there!
She disturbed the dragon egg!!!
He sent her packin'!
Poor Ella... she tried to hide under a mushroom.
(Elephants don't fit very well under mushrooms...)
The next thing she knew she was chained up!
(trying to chew her way through those chains...
NOT good on the teeth Ella!)
FORTUNATELY... the prince showed up!
Just as he always does...
He rescued our Fair Ella...
And returned her safely back to us!
Uncle Grimbor & Ella
We all had snowcones to celebrate!
The Uncles were glad we got Ella back safely - but they
just had to tease Mom about her choice of friends!
Mom said...
Blllllph!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Soooooo... OFF Ella goes on the big silver bird that will take her away to ... her next big adventure in... HAWAII!!! Yes, she is on her way to see Quilly and OC... I'm sure OC is just thrillllllled about THIS development! LOL! I can't wait to see what she & Quilly will find to do! ( I just PRAY she doesn't fall in a volcano! ) .... i bet she gets to learn the hula ... I'm sO jealous!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Krysti & her partner were eliminated in the first round of yesterday's debate! :( I asked her what went wrong and she said the opposition hit them with 2 disadvantages that they didn't have a solution for. I guarantee you this... THAT won't happen in the NEXT debate! LOL! Oh the joy of achieving brain wrinkles!
Wordzzle... and Beachy Stuff...
Words for this week's 10-word challenge: budget, news, outer space, gargantuan, brass band, Purple Rose of Cairo, polar bears, insight, innovations, mute
I heard on the news the other night about that new "budget" dance club for poor blokes like me. They were having their grand opening Friday night and I stopped in. They had a great brass band playing... Purple Rose of Cairo & The Polar Bears! The trumpet player was awesome, and the trombone ... DUDE! The light show was like something from outer space... which was cool because the decor is all gallactic too. I ordered a Blue Moon and it came to me in a gargantuan space capsule with those flickering lights around it! Totally cosmic! The club is split into nine separate areas - each a different planet - and Saturn even has rings floating around it - what
great innovations! The owners have put a lot of thought into this and have some great insight! And the fact that there was NO cover charge left me mute! I think Planktyn Planet is going to be smashing success!
And for the mini challenge: investments, purring, death penalty, mercury, convalescent home
When our investments plummeted, the engine quit purring and the mercury climbed higher. It felt like a death penalty, but we had no choice... we would have to send the old clunker to a convalescent home for Ford Trucks.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

And some more random stuff from our adventures....

Chilly Beach!

Ella bowlin'...

Mom & Ella ride the tram up & down the boardwalk.

Lunch at Fish Tales... a fabulous little place on the Bay side!

These relaxing chairs help make Fish Tales the fabulous
little place it is!!!

A verrrrrrrry short beach!!!

Several of you have asked how much longer I have at the beach -- today begins my final week. Next Saturday we will be driving home... and I am going to MISS it here! The ocean really really does do something to my heart that just puts me at peace with the world! I've explained to your before how MUCH I feel God's presence in the Ocean... and when I am HERE and can see that huuuuuuge wide expanse I just feel surrounded by Him! Not that I'm not aware of Him in all of nature... but ... I don't know... the Ocean is just something else! This has been a GREAT vacation. (and it's not over yet!)

The weather is wreaking havoc for the SunFest -- and I feel really sorry for the town, because SunFest is the Last Hurrah ... the END of summer... and the BIG SALES when the Boardwalk merchants get rid of their inventory. Unfortunately the cooler temps have kept a great many people away this weekend, and the inventory is not disappearing quite the way they hoped. GOOD news for ME - because much is down now to 90% off!!! Usually it tops out at 75% off until like Sunday afternoon! I think soon they'll be GIVING stuff away! LOL!

My kiddo's arrive back here this afternoon so I doubt I'll be here for a few days... I'm scheduling a post for tomorrow... but then it will be a few days. I've got BIG plans though!!! Now... I'm off to read some Wordzzles!

Foiled Adventures!!! DRAT!

Mom and I had a really EXCITING adventure we were going to go on yesterday... but drat it all the adventure wouldn't cooperate... and so we blew a whole day just waiting and hoping. Well ... I did... Mom wasted a whole day forgetting that we were even going to HAVE an adventure and will be perfectly happy to have it next week ... or not at all! LOL!

So... instead, I dig into my beach archives (which is all of one week old!) and pull out some prior adventures that have not yet been shared! And since I'm missing my baby girl... we'll go there!

Luz LIVES for the boardwalk... and the rides!
(of course she does... what child doesn't?)
Ella enjoys them too!

They make really great travel companions!
(Ella says "I told you I liked horses!")

Baby Girl LOVES the WHIP though!

And as you can see... Ella was NOT crazy about this one!
(of course, Luz didn't have a margarita with dinner...)

Luz rode THIS one by herself!
(Check out the little boys checkin out my little girl!)
Sheeeeeesh! Already???

Now what could Luzi Loo be watching so intently?

Could be this dude singing the special Luz Song made up
right on the spot that very minute to coincide with whatever
Mommy had just told him about her!

Luz is now totally convinced that real life really IS a musical
and that it is not ONLY her family that breaks into song in her
honor!!! Obviously the entire world does it!
ROFLMBO!!!

A Visit To Assateague Island ...

Assateague Island...
Where the horses are wild & free...

Mom & I drove down to Assateague yesterday. I've always wanted to go to either Assateague or Chincateague -- ever since I was a kid and read the book Misty of Chincateague, I've always wanted to go see the wild horses roaming free. So this vacation allowed me the opportunity to do just that... and it was awesome!

We had no sooner entered the "National Park" part... which not all of it is... but as soon as we drove in, over to the right were these 3 horses. I thought to myself oh they are not the wild ones... they have been planted there to make people think they are! Silly me!

Just another second down the road we spotted a few
more
horses... just wandering around...

They were verrrrrrrrry friendly!!!

This group just literally POSED for me!
I couldn't believe it!

But then... you know me! I'm like... wait a minute! These horses are just running around out on the street! They are supposed to be out in the marshes! I don't want pictures of these horses out here on the STREET! This might not be Assateague at all... This might be a parade in downtown Annapolis!!! Right? No! This will NOT do! (my Bloggin' Babes can HEAR me saying this! Can't you guys? I knew it!) Soooooo... I go off in search of the lesser seen horse!

So I went looking on the ocean side of the island...

But there were none... in either direction....

So then I went looking on the bay side of the island...

But there were none there either...

So then I started lookin' in all the nooks and crannies!!!
And finally... just around the bend...

PAY DIRT!
First I spotted these two...

just munching away with the bay behind them.

They were only about 20 feet from someone's camp site!

These animals have absolutely no fear of people!
(and mom wasn't as angry as she looks either!)

Suddenly I spotted this BABY around a little bend.

As I got nearer to him, I saw his Mama...

But she had NO PROBLEM with me getting even
THIS close to her little one! I honestly could have
petted him... no one was around to stop me...
but the rules are clear... no touching and NO FEEDING!
And obviously people respect the horses and the
rules... because these wild horses are just amazing!

And before we left... you know our Ella!
She had to make sure you knew she was
THERE!

It was a great day!

Adventure on the High Seas!!!

The other day we wanted to take a nice little cruise....
We were told Ella had to stay home because of
weight issues with the ship...

When we got aboard we found out our CAPTAIN
was a PIRATE... a little unnerving at best!
He made us all listen up...

And if we didn't know how to wear a life vest he
would throw us OVERBOARD!!!
(we weren't scared though - we know life vests...)

When we got out on the High Seas we discovered a stow-away!
Not ONLY did she exceed the weight limit, but she hadn't PAID
to come on board either!!!

The captain said she would have to walk the plank!
(but first things first...)
Since we were on HIS ship, we must ALL become pirates!

The first thing you need to be a pirate is a tattoo!

All the little pirates got an anchor for the ship's symbol.
And then he went looking for all the bearded ladies...
and he FOUND some too!

I knew I'd be in trouble if I forgot to shave!
DARN!

A couple of characters if EVER there were some!

Once we had alllllll become proper pirates, it was time to
search for treasure....
We thought we found some of the port bow...

But it turned out to be instructions for reading the treasure map!
(very important data!)

And so the hunt continues....

When we finally FOUND the treasure it was in the hands
(or on the boat) of another Scallyway Pirate... and we had
to FIGHT for it! The battle was bloody! (or WET anyway)

But at last, the treasure chest was in OUR possession!!!
(and we would NEVER let it go!)

1.) What's IN there?
2.) OPEN it!!!
3.) Just a little peek...
4.) Pirate Luz saw a RING in there!

At last....

The chest is OPEN and there is treasure for everyone!!!

Now the pirates want to party... and music is needed... so
we must JUMP on deck to wake the prisoners below... so
they can SING for us!

Yo Ho Yo Ho a Pirates Life for MEEE!!!

With the prisoners singing at the top of their lungs, the dancing began...

Pirate Mommy lead the wee pirates in the line dance
around to the

LIMBO POLE!!!
Gooooooo Pirate Mommy!!!

And then she held the pole so the Captain could celebrate
too!
GREAT fun was had by all!!!

And all pirates earned their patch!

And WHAT became of the elephant???

Well... without the help of her Super Sprayer Trunk we
might NEVER have won the treasure! So the Captain
forgave her and set her free!!! YAY!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I hope this adventure mOre than makes up for my somewhat lacking posts of late! Today is very gray and cool ... Amanda picked just the right day to go home! But they will be back on Saturday with Mathew & Carol too and we will all enjoy SUNFEST together -- which is a HUGE end of the summer party held here in Ocean City every year! This will be our first time attending though... it is sure to be fun! (even if the weather is still planning to be a bit cool...)
Today Mom & I are doing "ketchup" stuff.... we got our nails done, went to the car wash, grocery shopped... things like that. We found out that on average a female person between the ages of 4 and 77 uses 1.5 rolls of Super Size toilet paper in ONE week!
So... now that I've posted, I'm off to catch up with some more of you! :)
