Mom & I drove down to Assateague yesterday. I've always wanted to go to either Assateague or Chincateague -- ever since I was a kid and read the book Misty of Chincateague, I've always wanted to go see the wild horses roaming free. So this vacation allowed me the opportunity to do just that... and it was awesome!
We had no sooner entered the "National Park" part... which not all of it is... but as soon as we drove in, over to the right were these 3 horses. I thought to myself oh they are not the wild ones... they have been planted there to make people think they are! Silly me!
Just another second down the road we spotted a fewmore horses... just wandering around...
They were verrrrrrrrry friendly!!!
This group just literally POSED for me! I couldn't believe it!
But then... you know me! I'm like... wait a minute! These horses are just running around out on the street! They are supposed to be out in the marshes! I don't want pictures of these horses out here on the STREET! This might not be Assateague at all... This might be a parade in downtown Annapolis!!! Right? No! This will NOT do! (my Bloggin' Babes can HEAR me saying this! Can't you guys? I knew it!) Soooooo... I go off in search of the lesser seen horse!
So I went looking on the ocean side of the island...
But there were none... in either direction....
So then I went looking on the bay side of the island...
But there were none there either...
So then I started lookin' in all the nooks and crannies!!!
And finally... just around the bend...
PAY DIRT!
First I spotted these two...
just munching away with the bay behind them.
They were only about 20 feet from someone's camp site!
These animals have absolutely no fear of people!
(and mom wasn't as angry as she looks either!)
Suddenly I spotted this BABY around a little bend.
As I got nearer to him, I saw his Mama...
But she had NO PROBLEM with me getting even
THIS close to her little one! I honestly could have
petted him... no one was around to stop me...
but the rules are clear... no touching and NO FEEDING!
And obviously people respect the horses and the
rules... because these wild horses are just amazing!
And before we left... you know our Ella!
She had to make sure you knew she was
THERE!
It was a great day!

What fun! I am glad you got to see the ones further from the road. It's so funny how they all lined up on the road for a picture!

Hi, Since I got on here and looked at your neat pictures the phone rang and it was the Dr.office and they had the report in from the test that Nancy had today.
She said Nancy had some large gall stones and we have to go see her stomach Dr. They are to call and set us up with an appointment.
In the mean Time!!! I go tomorrow back up to St Mary's to talk with the Dr who is going to work on my legs to take care of the blockage. Yikes this is to much!!!

i bet those horses are so used to having people come to see them that they are now good at posing..don't ya think? They are beautiful. We have an island here that also has wild horses. The kids have been there but not us. I think the walking would be too much for Mikey. I would love to see them. What fun..Sandy

Oh those are wonderful! And I gotta love the picture of Mom! Have I mentioned how much I have grown to love her?

Hi Melli, all of these horses are wonderful... their coats look so shiny...that would be a cool place to visit...the boat ride below looks like fun too...
When Fred gets home from work, I will show him your greeting .....thanks for sharing with him..I am cooking him a steak, baked potato, salad and apple pie with ice cream, his favorite...

Get out! This was your 1st time?! Holy cow! You were deprived until now. Aren't they just gorgeous?! And yes, so human friendly now. That's what turning it into a "park" does. but at least they're protected and free to roam. :)

When I was very young, my sister gave me the book King of the Wind which is also by Margarite (sp.) Henry. I loved Misty of Chincoteague too and when I was about 8 there was a NYTimes contest to add a chapter. I had the meanest/stupidest 4th grade teacher on earth. My added chapter was written in dialect like the books. She gave me an F. One of the rare occasions on which my mother went and fought for me. In the end I was a runner up and got to go to the NY Times building in NYC and Mrs. Henry sent me a picture of her with Misty which I still have today. Whew! Long post. How cool that you got to go there. I can still quote passages from most of her books. I loved those stories.

Oh, I loved that book too...absolutely crazy about it - what a treat to be able to go there...guess I better put that on my list of stuff I need to do. Thanks for the reminder of Misty.
