I'm a Ferrari! ... and a Reading Meme... and Stuff!

I DO know it's Thursday and time for 13 X's ...
... but I am just not UP for it this week!
I'm still recuperating from VBS! LOL!
Next week... I promise... in the meantime... I'm a car!

I'm a Ferrari 360 Modena!

You've got it all! Power, passion, precision, and style. You're sensuous, exotic, and temperamental. Sure, you're expensive and high-maintenance, but you're worth it.

I FOUND this Reading Meme over at Susan's Learning For Lifetime. She did not tag me... I tagged my own self!

1. Do you remember how you developed a love of reading?
??? ??? ... ??? Um... no. I only remember that from the time I learned to read I was in trouble every night of my life for reading "under the covers" after I was supposed to be asleep! I still get in trouble for it - but not until I have to get up in the morning ... and can't.

2. What are some books you loved as a child?
Well, of course, as a wee child there was Winnie The Pooh, Grimm's Fairy Tales, and Beatrix Potter. And the story of Little Black Sambo! And then once I could read on my own, the one's that I used to get in trouble for were The Bobbsey Twins and the Honeybunch series. Honeybunch more than Bobbseys actually! Those are the only "series" books I remember reading as a kid. The Secret Garden. After those I don't really remember "loving" any particular ones. And I know as a teenager I didn't really read "books" -- I devoured teen magazines! And I read a lot of biographies back then too... Howard Hughes was one of my favorites! He was sooooooooo weird!

3. Do you have a favorite genre?
These days I LOVE true crime stories, and crime dramas. I also love my spiritual books and Bible studies. And I do still enjoy biographies too. Sometimes I'll pick up a biography about someone I've never heard of ... and get pleasantly surprised! I read Marvella one time... a long time ago! Marvella Bayh -- wife of (then) Senator Birch Bayh. I had never heard of either one of them at the time -- but her story of fighting cancer AND being a senators wife has stayed with me all these years. She eventually lost the battle... but she was a lovely woman.

4. Do you have a favorite novel?
*whew* That is a HARD one! I don't think I do! There are several that have stuck in my mind through the years... The Thorn Birds (Colleen McCullough) probably comes close - the movie was good too - but the book was SO much better! Kane & Abel (Jeffrey Archer) sticks with me. A Woman of Substance (Barbara Taylor Bradford) also sticks. Those are all modern authors - even if the books are a bit dated! Classics I've really enjoyed are Little Women, Great Expectations, The Scarlett Letter, The Great Gatsby (is that a classic?) ...

5. Where do you usually read?
My favorite place is in bed! And if I get into a "can't put it down" novel, I just MIGHT stay in bed all day!!! I also like to read while pedaling - but it must be LITE reading! (pun intended!)

6. When do you usually read?
Mostly at night ... but not exclusively!

7. Do you usually have more than one book you are reading at a time?
I don't remember WHEN I didn't have 2 or 3 books going at one time!

8. Do you read nonfiction in a different way or place than you read fiction?
Nope. Well... if I'm reading to "study" - then yes. I read at my computer desk so that I can look things up quickly, cross reference, etc... but if I'm reading nonfiction for pleasure, then no.

9. Do you buy most of the books you read, or borrow them, or check them out of the library?
I DO check some out of the library ... and then I don't take them back for forever and ever and ... well... let's just say I single handedly KEEP our public library in business! But I buy most of my books and then pass them on when I'm done. I donate a lot to the library! I donate the Christian ones to the church library. And some I just pass on to friends or family!

10. Do you keep most of the books you buy?
Oh. I think you should see the above answer for this! LOL!

11. If you have children, what are some of the favorite books you have shared with them?
ACK! I just did a whole post on this a week or two ago! Here it is!

12. What are you reading now?
Praying God's Word, by Beth Moore
Blessing In Disguise, by Eileen Goudge (novel)
A Godward Life, by John Piper

13. Do you keep a To Be Read list?
I keep a list, I keep a PILE, and I keep an ongoing order with Amazon! My cart is NEVER empty!

14. What’s next?
Hinds' Feet On High Places, Hannah Hurnard
On What Grounds, Cleo Coyle

15. What books would you like to reread?
The only books I've EVER re-read (besides the Bible) are children's books. I really don't like to read books twice... although I probably SHOULD! I'm sure I'd get more out of it the 2nd time around! But I just can't hold interest in something that I already know how it ends. (did that sentence make ANY sense? Is it EVEN a sentence?) LOL!

16. Who are your favorite authors?
Ohhhhh it's a long list! Right NOW I would say James Patterson, David Baldacci, Max Lucado, John Ortberg, Charles Stanley ... not necessarily in that order! But continuing favorites are Jan Karon, Maeve Binchy, Janet Evanovich, Ann Rule, Chris Bohjalian, Lillian Jackson Braun, Nelson DeMille, Lawrence Sanders

I'm not tagging anyone, but... you know... if ya WANNA play, let me know! I'll be around to hear what you've got to say!

Yesterday Luz and I spent the morning painting T-shirts for her little family for her Mommy's birthday which is Saturday (and so is Dennis & my anniversary!). We made 3 t-shirts -- a Great BIG Daddy size, a medium Mommy size, and weeeeee little Luzi size! They are all similar in that Luz painted a picture (or design) on each one (though the designs are not similar!) and in that they say something similar on them. (I can't say what right now...) So as we were getting ready to take her HOME she wanted to take her t-shirt HOME too. I said NO - I explained that it was still wet - AND that it is going in the box for Mommy's birthday. Luz got very pouty and said she didn't WANT it for Mommy's birthday. She wanted it NOW. I said NO - and I reminded her that it is part of the SURPRISE for Mommy's birthday. She reluctantly left the t-shirt at my house. I am taking it to her house tomorrow so we can wrap them all together and she can hide it until Saturday. So we get to her house and her mommy is home and we sit on the couch and we're talking about her day, and her mommy has TRAINED her to tell every minute of her day from the minute her feet hit the floor until they are reunited because her mommy can not STAND to be left out of ANYthing... and so we get to the "and THEN what did you do?" and Luz says "And THEN we PAINTED T-SHIRTS!!!" Grrrrrr.... And I said "You BIG mouth!"... and her mommy laughed! *sigh* She used to be the BEST secret keeper in the WORLD... until her mommy TRAINED her!

By the way...

1.) Housework is just such a thing of the past!
2.) Kitty IS Super Mouser EXTRAORDINAIRE!!!
(he needs a CAPE with SME on it!)
3. Baby Girl is Luz! Kitty is... Kitty.

We have the same tastes for books (except the bible) and I also was brought up with Grim's fairy tales, lol ! I can't fall asleep without reading even if I only read 3 lines. The T-shirt story is too cute, against mummy no chance !
I put today 13 pictures on my blog of the different workshops in my summer school, it's really amazing, some of them I never heard of like a workshop for fairy tales where you have to invent one !
Last time I had been there was 10 years ago and there we only had painting, drawing, sculpture and ceramic and some music classes and we were maybe 150 people. Today in the second week of July there were more than 500 and 300 when I was there ! Has a lot of success apparently. The price for one week was 300 € (468 $)everything included. I had a little room like a cell but there was a shower in it. The school is a boarding school. The food was healthy and good, a lot of vegetables and no junk food !!

Your Christian book reading list puts mine to shame. In fact, this is the only summer in recorded history that I haven't read a half a library full of books. Probably because I replaced my reading with picture taking!

I'm a Lamborghini Murcielago! You're not subtle, but you don't want to be. Fast, loud, and dramatic, you want people to notice you, and then get out of the way. In a world full of sheep, you're a raging bull.
Me?? I am a quiet sheep, lol.
Haven't done a T13 in ages, I don't think they have me in their blogroll anymore, will check that out.
Oh, little Luz is a sweetie, even when she cannot keep secrets!
I tend to read more than one book at a time, it's much more fun!

So....tell me, what is "Blessing in Disguise" about? Sounds good.

Now, I gotta go find out what car I am.

By Blogger Hootin Anni, at 7/31/2008 6:43 AM

You are a Chevrolet Corvette!

You're a classic - powerful, athletic, and competitive. You're all about winning the race and getting the job done. While you have a practical everyday side, you get wild when anyone pushes your pedal. You hate to lose, but you hardly ever do.

By Blogger Hootin Anni, at 7/31/2008 6:45 AM

I loved your book meme. I had totally forgotten about The Thorn Birds, but I loved that book, too. And the teen magazines. We loved to get some lyric magazine that came out as well as Tiger Beat! Memories.

That Luz is just so cute. I love it that she and her Mommy are so...connected.

Hugs,

Susan

I'm a Mazda RX-8.
"You're sporty, yet practical, and you have a style of your own. You like to have fun, and you like to bring friends along for the ride, but when it comes time for everyday chores, you're willing to do your part."

This is funny -- I created this book meme a few weeks ago here. LOL! I've been amazed at how it has gotten around.

Luz's mother has her trained well! But that might mean she receives very few surprises in her life, LOL!

I'm off to try the car quiz.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 7/31/2008 11:33 AM

I may do the book meme...that really brought back a lot of memories about reading.

Luz is soooo adorable :)

My friend and I had a nice lunch and went to Pier 1 afterward to pick up a few new things for her new home. I felt like I'd come full circle...I used to go to Pier 1 when I was young and couldn't afford very much and now I was back. AND...I found a lovely embroidered pillow with a zipper for $8.98 on sale. I laughed so hard because I've spent probably that much on embroidery floss in the past couple of days. I bought the sucker, too. It is very pretty and last night I bought some fabric that is very similar in color and I can do my embroidery on it and put them on either side. I'll take a pic of it. The camera is charging right now so can't dl the pics of the "rain" and stuff.

Oh no, I figure if Daisy isn't posting as much, I'd post twice! Just kidding. I seriously came back to figure out what kind of car I am. I'm a "Porsche". It said: You have a classic style, but you're up-to-date with the latest technology. You're ambitious, competitive, and you love to win. Performance, precision, and prestige - you're one of the elite, and you know it.

Thanks, I needed that.

Hi Melli, I am a red Chevrolet Corvette and posted it on my blog.I also would read in bed late at night with a flashlight to see by, when I was growing up...I used to love reading the Nancy Drew series and the Bobbsey twins books.I can only read one book at a time, so that I can remember what it is about, before starting another one. Love ya, Baba

By Blogger Baba, at 7/31/2008 5:42 PM

I love to read too!! I love Cozy Murder Mystery's!! Right now I am reading the new Sister Chick book. I enjoyed your post!! Love and hugs Grams

I didn't take the quiz but I would end up as a Model T.
I think I'll pass on this meme.
I never could get my kids to keep a secret from their mother but they were good at keeping secrets from me.
If you get the cat a cape post a picture.

I came back to share my quiz results:

I am a Lotus Elise!
"You believe in maximum performance and minimum baggage. You like to travel light and fast, hit the corners hard, and dance like there's no tomorrow."

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 7/31/2008 7:43 PM

Hi Melli...

So, I'm busted, hanging my head in shame I have to admit I forgot to come back and say I'd swiped the meme... I just got so excited about a great book meme - loved your answers and wanted to pinch a couple cos you said what I wanted to better than me....

Anyway, sorry for not coming back to de-lurk myself, now off to see the snitch!
