ATrash Can Garden . . .
I've decided to JOIN the ranks! I want a vegetable garden too! I wanted to grow upside down tomatoes this year, but I never found the growers in my WoeMart, so I'm just gonna grow rightsideup ones! I got a huge one yesterday! Way to big for a little pot! It's a Big Boy! And then I got two smaller tomato plants too. And a yellow pepper and a green pepper! And then I went looking for POTS! (my title was almost "I wanna be POT planter!" hehehe...) CHEAP pots are no where to be FOUND these days - not EVEN at WoeMart! I was NOT going to spend 40 smackers a pot to grow vegetables... so I bought trash cans instead! Dennis drilled holes in the bottom of 'em... we tossed a few stones in the bottom of each one, added dirt and potting soil, and VOILA! I even already HAD an not in use kitchen trashcan for the Big Boy tomatoes!
Of course Ella helped me plant!I wonder if those little trashcans are REALLY going to be
big enough? LOL!
Here she is taking a sniff of my Mandevilla.(courageous Me is going to try to not only keep it for the
summer, but hopefully bring it IN to be a houseplant over
the winter... *crosses fingers*... ) poor plant...
Well... my Big Boy already has a flower!(I probably should pick it though... the plant isn't really
big enough yet to start production!)
In other news... Church was a little disappointing yesterday. That's really unusual for me to say that... but it was. We had our confirmations and that part was really good - except someone behind me had a baby who was NOT being bad! He was actually being very HAPPY! He was making JOYFUL NOISE unto the Lord! Multitudinous squeals of glee! And little clapping hands! (he was about 9 months old! And adorable!) But I sO wanted to heeeear what the confirmands had to say and it was most difficult with Wee One right smack behind me! I was also a little bummed because Pastor did not give a sermon. I LOOOOOVE a sermon! I'm probably the only person on the planet that wishes the sermon would go on for days... but he didn't give one today. He let the confirmands testimonies stand as our sermon. In his defense, I will say - we had 13 confirmands at the 10:45 service - and that is a LOT to get through and give each one his due! In addition communion took about twice as long as it normally does because of all the extra attendee's FOR the confirmands! (which was WONDERFUL - the church was PACKED! Like Christmas packed!) That part didn't bum me. But mostly, it was just the fact that it WAS confirmation. Confirmation day always bums me out a little bit BECAUSE I look at these kids... and they are just amazing kids... but they remind me so much of what I WASN'T when I was their age! And I can only just BARELY remember my own confirmation. I don't remember having to write a testimony... I'm actually certain that I DIDN'T have to... and I don't even remember choosing a Bible verse. I only remember having to choose a confirmation NAME - and that it had to be a saint's name - and I chose Katherine. And I remember the Cardinal came to confirm us, and there is a part in the Catholic confirmation where the Cardinal slaps your cheek. (I don't remember what it's for - and it's not a SLAP - it's just a little pat -- but it's symbolic of something and I don't remember it!) I don't EVEN remember which Cardinal it was in attendance! I DO remember that confirmation was something that I didn't really WANT to go through! It was something that was forced on me because I was "the age" and it's "what you do". But I look at those kids who were in my church today... and they are there because they WANT to be... because they LOVE Jesus and they "get" what it's all about! (believe me - they get it! If they didn't, Pastor would see to it that they DO! I don't believe he would confirm a child that didn't "get it".) They HAVE written their testimonies. They DID choose their Bible verse. And they WILL remember this as the day that THEY declared themselves Christians. They are some awesome kids! I'm sO proud of each of them!
Tonight I start my new Bible Study! We are beginning Judges tonight! This will be verrrry interesting to me, because I have NO idea what Judges is about! I know there are some long lists of names to get through... but as long as I don't have to MEMORIZE them or anything, I'll be fine! I really can't wait to get started!
Other than that, TODAY is going to be a cool 75 degrees - and SUNNY! I have GOT to find something to get into outdoors today! Seeeeeya later!

Oh Melli...when I was little my parents drug me to church all the time. I mean we went to Sunday school, church, VBS, and even the sunrise services. I wasn't that hip on those sunrise things...it was cold and I was sleepy. I wasn't into joy then. Anyway that wasn't all. We went to church tent revivals, too. We had revivals at our church, too. I have probably been baptized a hunnerd times. I would slip away from my parents and go get baptized. I'm sure it was the Methodist church because there was no total immersion, which we didn't do, but the Baptists do. However, I do think I hung out at the Baptist church a lot, because I know all their old songs and not so many of the Methodist ones. I bought a hymnal at the 1/2 price store and got the Baptist one, cuz well you know...I knew their songs.
Good idea for growing your plants. Little ole Mexican ladies and Italian, too, I think used to use the very large cans that vegetables come in. I've saved some old cans that are large enough and plan to pot up my extra tomato plants in them. I'm out of room and can never find small plants when it is 110 degrees outside in the middle of summer. It was a HOT one today here!
Oh and my slideshow is up...took all night to dl the pics to the computer then upload them to photobucket and then make the slideshow. I'm off to bed now!

What a great idea to use garbage cans! Once plants start growing you don't really notice the planter anyway -- doesn't make sense to buy expensive ones. Hope they do well for you!
Normally I really like testimony times. It's hard to enjoy, though, when a baby, however adorable, is distracting to the point that you can't hear.
I think I may have told you I went back and forth between Lutheran and Baptist churches until me later teens. I had missed the usual confirmation classes in the Lutheran church, but my best friend went, and at least in her class not many seemed to take it seriously. I think many go through it because it's expected, because they're supposed to. It's great that the kids there seem to understand and take it seriously.
I wonder what the symbolic slap/pat was all about? I can't imagine.
I think what's important is that you're living for God NOW.
I like the book of Judges. Hope you enjoy it!
Today was our first day of summer break. Whoo-hoo! No alarm clock! Though I did wake up at 3 and then again at 5:30, I fell back asleep for a while on the couch. But it just feels nice not to have to hit the ground running. Then again, without that, my mornings start later and the rest of the day runs later.

As a kid I went to Methodist Sunday School but not Church. I think my parents went Christmas and Easter.
But God still got us Melli.
I confirmed kids that never came back to church. You can't read their hearts.
A new Bible Study is a good thing.

Oh Melli...you HAVE joined the ranks of the Green Thumbers now! I wish you the best of luck. Yep, the kids used to do that when they'd get seeds and such...we'd go to the dollar stores and come out with spending less than $10. When at nurseries and as you say K-Marts and Wal Marts....they're costly. Way too much for what you get from the effort. It'd be cheaper to buy the amount of veggies you get from the produce aisles. Me on the other hand,........I like to go to roadstands off the highways. Yummy, homegrown stuff without the worry of worms, feed, watering, heat, parched land, etc.
GOOD LUCK!!!

So nice to see Ella back. I think your garbage things as planters is brilliant.
You got me curious about the slap on the cheek (wasn't part of my Methodist confirmation that I remember). Found two things. This in Wikepedia: "However, the French and Italian translations, indicating that the bishop should accompany the words "Peace be with you" with "a friendly gesture" (French text) or "the sign of peace" (Italian text), explicitly allow a gesture such as the touch on the cheek, to which they restore its original meaning."
At the American Catholic Press, I found this: "There has been some confusion in recent church history about the origins and meaning of confirmation. Some recall the theology that taught this sacrament makes us “strong Christians and soldiers of Jesus Christ.” These people think that this theology was revealed by Jesus and is unchangeably true. They remember the bishop giving children a slight slap on the cheek to remind them that they must be ready to suffer for Christ and the faith. In the new Rite of Confirmation, however, the slap is gone. In the catechesis of the Church, “strong Christians and soldiers of Jesus Christ” has disappeared. confirmation never did make young, innocent, and immature Catholics into warriors for Christ."
Glad you enjoyed the sketches for my kitchen. Aren't they amazing? I actually thought of you when I was posting them.

I planted yesterday, and my back is aching. Did leave some tomato plants in pots on the patio, but everything else went into the garden!

Oh Melli...I wish you lived closer, I have a plethora of pots that could use a good home.
Glad you joined the ranks of the pleasantly potted!
Good idea to use those trash cans, BTW.
