Thank God I'm A Country Girl!
You know.... sometimes, God just smiles down on us and says "Child, you get a TREAT today!" Yesterday was such a day for ME! Nuttin' big ... well, wait... yea, actually it WAS pretty BIG! But it was just a "little thing"... just a little "let me make your day" type thing! I suuuuuuure did appreciate it! Let me show you!Mom and I went grocery shopping, and stopped for McDonalds on the way home. Mom was still eating as we pulled into the neighborhood, and as I rounded the bend... I saw this...
Well... we all know I ALWAYS have my camera with me and so I pulled up into the neighbors driveway where I could get a GOOD shot of it, and zoomed in! Then I decided I really needed a closer look at that HOPPER! So, I got out of the car...
And then I zoomed in!I was happy now! Good thing - cuz it went empty just after I took that shot! But then the real fun started! And sadly... I forgot about the camera in my excitement! Cuz NOW I can think of several shots I would have LIKED to have gotten. But anyway -- the FARMER opened the door of his COMBINE and asked me if I'd like to take a ride! ??? Me? It took me about 15 seconds to weigh the pros and cons of leaving Mom alone eating in the car long enough to take a whirl through this field! I figured 5 minutes, max - she'd be FINE! She was eating! Mom is intense when she's eating! She wasn't going ANYwhere! LOL! So I said HECK YEA! And the farmer dropped the ladder and up I climbed! (now, if I had it to do again, I woulda got a shot lookin up that ladder... and I woulda got a shot lookin' DOWN into that wagon full of feed corn! But woulda's are ... useless!) And I SHOULDA got a shot lookin' into that cabin - so you would know how CRAMPED it was in there with my Xtra Large size body! It is a single seater cab!
But when I looked out the windshield, this is what was there! And then we took off!
And this is what happens...

Those "tines" go between the corn rows, and the CORN goes between the tines! And it threshes it to within an inch of it's life and rips those ears right off those stalks, shreds the stalks to smithereens, and shoots the ears right into the hopper (or whatever it's called) ! The hopper shreds the kernals off the ears and I honestly don't know WHAT it does with the cobs... maybe it grinds them up too -- it is FEED after all... But when it gets it full, then it's time to go back to start, where I originally came into the game! I only rode one time around the field with him - so it wasn't full yet. He offered I could go round again -- but I figured Mom MIGHT be done and gettin' antsy -- so I went on back! What a NEAT thing to get to do though! That old farmer was so nice! And he explained a lot too! It certainly took the "ordinary" outta MY day!

Melli ~ Glad you had a good time. Reading this I remembered when I was a Wee Boy and sitting on my Uncle Jim's lap and steering the tractor whilst he drove it.
Thank you for the post, it brought back such a wonderful precious memory.

How cool! What a neat ride. I am so glad you got to do this, even if you did forget to take a couple of photos.

How cool is this. The photos are excellent my friend. At least this time you didn't have to pull a hari kari and get across lanes of traffic for the photos :)

After a month or so of harvest celebrations round here thanks for the very visual reminders of why we remember! Great pictures Melli!

I agree, it's great to be country. I haven't ever ridden in a combine, but I sometimes help my husband when he is logging, and long ago I helped in the hayfield. Nice post!

How cool is that!! My boys would have loved a ride like that. What a nice thing for the farmer to do, and what a nice little treat from God.

Wow! Lucky you! I've wanted to ride in one of those things for like ever. I see them around here from time to time, but never have ridden in one.
Was Mom wondering where you went? Probably not. :o)

We had a barn full of farm machinery and I never got to ride on any of it when it was in use. You are so very fortunate.
Great pictures.
