VBS Day 4
VBS Day 4
Lesson - Matt 27:62-28:20
in which Jesus rose from the dead
Lesson - Matt 27:62-28:20
in which Jesus rose from the dead
In our opening skit, I (Barb Bee) meet Sarge -- he's with Hive Security. He has a list of infractions against our hive a mile long - and they're all MY fault! LOL! I was squirmin! I didn't even know hives HAD security! But I was informed that bees come to the hive at all hours of the day and night to eat, rest and become invigorated to go out and do their jobs - and so it MUST be a safe haven! (turns out it's a lot like going to church!) So anyway - I send the kids out to hear today's story and listen for the part about when the security guards DON'T do their job very well. (oh Sarge was INDIGNANT about that!) In the meantime, I had to go with Sarge and get these infractions taken care of....
Meanwhile... in Honeycomb Crafts... this was the first time EVER I have used one of the crafts that CAME WITH the VBS kit! But this one fit so perfectly and I knew that as much as the leaders would hate it, the kids would LOVE it ... so I had Shawn order them for me!
Planet ZOOM Fling Things!
Nothing like 85 projectiles flinging through
the VBS air space to liven things up!!!
Obviously, our take home point today was to "Go and Tell"!
(the Good News of Jesus resurrection)
It was such an easy little craft - just peel and stick - that I added another
easy little craft to it, and the kids got a two-fer today!
They also made these cute little magnets.
(some said Bee Kind, Bee Joyful, Bee Patient...)

Again, I did not get ANY pictures of the LITTLE guys...
but they ALL enjoyed the crafts! And today was Luz's
last day of VBS because they were leaving for Pittsburgh
for the weekend. (that made me a little sad)

So, meeting up with Sarge again at the end of the day, HE was more interested in learning what the kids could tell him about those "flagrantly unscrupulous" security guards in today's story! The kids DID tell him that they were supposed to be guarding Jesus tomb because the authorities were afraid someone would steal His body. But the angel SCARED the guards... and when he rolled the stone away, sure enough Jesus body was gone! He had risen from the dead! The guards ran away because they feared for their lives... So anyway - the kids learned that because Jesus had risen that proved that God had accepted the sacrifice of His Son for our sins, and that we are forgiven. Of course, we encouraged them to ZOOM out into the world and TELL!
I don't know why - but this lesson, this day, made me a little bit "uncomfortable" about teaching it. I know that Jesus DOES tell us to spread the Good News, and to grow the church... but THIS lesson seemed to me to "hit the kids over the head" with it. You all know I'm getting very involved in the "outreach" program at my church -- and to me "outreach" is really more about sharing the love of Jesus - in practical ways - and just making sure to give Jesus credit for it... rather than doing any real Bible thumping. There is such a fine line between sharing His love, and scaring people to death! (LITERALLY! - if we scare them away what good does THAT do???) I am open for thoughts on this...
Tomorrow's post will be my last day of VBS and the lesson I am MOST fond of! :) But oh! I haven't shared the NAILS I was sportin' this week! Looky here...

You love VBS so much, Melli...it makes me happy. You guys are really pretty smart, too. I didn't know bees came out at night, but they sure do. Found this on Wiki

Your nails are wonderful.
Yes, I am more about witness through my actions than through my mouth.
And what my VBS is doing right nowe that's driving me nuts is from the music ministry. All the songs are wonderful and have hand morions to act out as the kids sing, but in every sing one the motion for God and Jesus is to point toward the ceiling. Why are we teaching the kids that God and Jesus are abstractly "up there" somewhere? They are right here with us all the time!

I can understand your feelings about this lesson. It made me think of what a pastor once said. The bible has been translated so many times that nobody will ever know how the original was written because that was the old hebrew, which then had been translated into latin (because of the romans who started to spread christianity ) from there it was translated into other old languages then into the new once, and depending on the time the translators lived they added a little more for the people to better explain. I always remember that some idiot had translated the german word "Korn" into the English "corn", what the people needed was crop to make bread and not corn !
Love your nails, who painted these bees ?

What cute nails! BEE-yutiful! :-)
I can understand what you're saying -- I've read books and heard sermons that seem to promote backing everyone you meet into a corner and witnessing until they say they're converting! And what you get with that is people just going through the motions to get this crazy person out of their face. But the Bible does tell us to tell, not just show the gospel, and that does take words.
One thing that helped me find balance, especially with unbelieving loved ones, was, instead of thinking I needed to make an opportunity to witness to them every time I visited, to instead just ask the Lord to make me alert to opportunities to speak to them in the natural course of events. That's not to say we shouldn't sometimes go to people with the express purpose of witnessing -- Jesus did that, as did Peter, Paul, Phillip, and others. But we don't necessarily need to turn every conversation evangelistic.
Another thing that helped was to talk as naturally about the Lord to my family who didn't believe as I did to my church family. I might tell a Christian friend, "the Lord really blessed this morning -- I needed x and He provided it by..." At first I didn't talk like that to my unsaved family because I thought they wouldn't understand and it would make them uncomfortable. But then I realized they needed to see Him as part of my everyday life, as my closest friend, and not just the One who decided what happens to us after we die.
I disagree with Gattina about translations. Some very old manuscripts are still available (though still not the originals), and new translations go back to those old manuscripts -- they don't translate from translations.

Those nails are incredible! You have a talented manicurist, that's for sure!
As far as scaring people... we've been tricked into thinking angels are these cute cherubs or lovely ladies with wings, but I think if you look at biblical references, they were overpoweringly bright, holy creatures that filled us with awe and the fear of God (in a good way, but I suppose it would be SCARY). Why else would the angels in the Christmas story have to say, "Be not afraid."
So perhaps the guards were afraid of the angels. But I don't think the guards were scared of the angel harming them; I think they were afraid of what their bosses would do to them for failing at their jobs.
