Black Thumbs...

I've said it for years... and I've known it was true... but only recently did I finally learn just exactly HOW black my thumbs are! I know I can't keep an african violet alive. Everyone on the planet can keep african violets. Even my MOTHER could grow an african violet!!! But I can not. I know that flowers in my garden die before they get a chance to bloom! The only way I get pretty pictures of my gardens is to plant them IN BLOOM and quickly take a picture! Surely by morning they will be dead. BUT... it hasn't ALWAYS been this bad! Back in the day I DID used to have some houseplants! I had a shefflera that grew and grew! And I had spider plants that even made babies! *nods* Yes, I did! And I've grown potatoe plants from honest to goodness potatoe pieces. AND I've grown Avacado plants from seeds! It's not even hard. Ya just plunk 'em in a glass of water and wait for them to make roots. Then they sprout, and then comes dirt! ANY idiot can grow an avacado plant! And so, remembering the gorgeous plants of my youth, I decided to go that route again!

So, on January 28th, I plunked 3 avacado seeds into 3 cups
of water... and I even whispered to them ... grow!

They were happy little seeds ... I thought... all full of
life... and bubbling with growful energy!

See? Bubbles!
Well... okay ... that's the water!
But it's good oxygenated healthy life giving water!

And so they began!

And I waited.

And I waited.

And I waited.

And NOTHING!
That's what I got!
NOTHING!
No roots...
Not even after I helped one along...
by peeling off the outer shell...

Not one single bloomin' root!
Just rot!
Needs another "o"...

No "o" in Black Thumb...
so I guess I can't help!

Ah Melli....I've never had any luck with avocados. I've tried in the past. The seeds planted in the greenhouse are starting to germinate. We'll see if they make it. Only radishes and basil have come up so far.

I've made a little book with notebook paper and the seed packages taped on the pages with notes about when I planted...the expected germination date and how things are doing.

I'll try to get some pictures tomorrow.

I'm with you girl!!! I did ONE time have some African violets that thrived but I think it was a fluke!!
BTW, I love the picture of your MIL with her "bowl" of coffee! Bless her heart.....at least she knew it needed to go in something that had some depth!!

And I thought a black thumb was a good thing like black earth. Now I know better.
We don't do well with flowers either. The one year we were doing well in Crystal Falls the deer came and ate them. We are waiting to see if our roses made it through this winter. It was far colder than usual.

Oh I am definitely a BLACK THUMB! My guys know it. My friends know it. And I am reassured of it each time I THINK I'm going to overcome it and then I learn again.

Hugs,

Susan

I don't do well with plants, either. My summer hanging baskets usually do ok, but nothing inside thrives. My African violets would grow leaves but no blooms. So I have given up. :-)

I've done the potato plant growing, I too kill African violets, but I've never tried avacados.
Everything looks so neatly set up Melli. It all looks good. Be interesting to see if anybody has a clue as to what will help.

OC says you put them there in your February window and they were probably just too cold.

My guess is, you should not have whispered to them? ROFL!

Hahaha ! I wouldn't even try ! I decided to not have a green thumb and don't take care of my plants. I always forget to water them I don't change the pots I just do nothing and you know what happens ?? It's terrible everybody asks me what I am doing because ALL flowers and plants grow like in a jungle ! Nobody understands I included, lol !

Around here, the plants I have do wonders outdoors, but inside...blah! Nothing except my mother in law's tongue. And that one is SHRINKING!! LOL

I came here to catch up while I wasn't on the computer this weekend much, and LOVE the photo of your "MOM" and her bowl of coffee, she's adorable.

My Fun Monday is HERE

Mellie, I wouldn't say I have a black thumb, as I have good luck with some things. But, I have tried the avacado seeds and african violets and quite a few other plants, with NO luck. Ya think there's still hope for us? Maybe that just means that we are meant for something else? I LOVE your kitchen!!

And about the question you asked on my blog: That little pelican is in my home and consider your wish granted. :-)
