Idiom Wednesday - K & L ... and more trash!

It is Wednesday again, and thus time for some idioms! Jientje hosts this game and encourages us to pictorially display two new idioms each week - beginning with the assigned letters for the week. We're on K & L this week. It's NOT too late for you to jump in and play if you'd like to!

For "K" I have selected...

Keep Your Nose Clean!

Jewlie helped me out with this one...
(but not this week - it came from the archives!)
See? I CAN do it! LOL!

If someone tells you to "keep your nose clean" they mean
"stay out of trouble!"

And for "L" I decided on...

Lion's Share

Because he's the KING of the beasts,
The lion's share of something is the biggest or best part.

This is what Wiki has to say about it -- I didn't know this before:
(apparently I missed out on that fable growing up!)

Lion's Share is an expression that has come to mean the larger of two amounts, or more often, the largest of several amounts.

The saying derives from one of Aesop's fables, where the term is actually defined as the complete amount (all of it).

In the fable, a lion, fox, jackal and wolf go hunting, successfully killing a deer. It is divided into four parts with the lion taking the first quarter because he is king of the beasts, the second quarter because he is the arbiter of which animals get what portions of the deer, the third quarter because of his help in catching the deer, and the fourth quarter for his superior strength.

In some variants of the fable, the lion only takes three-quarters of the deer and lets the other animals fight over the remaining quarter.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So, I went back to WoeMart yesterday to get two more vegetable plants. (well... I had to fill those last two trash cans!) When I got there, the man with the biiiiiiiiiiig truck was there and they were moving things around on the vegetable carts. I told them they were makin' a mess, but they tol' me they were fixin' things up! I said, well, I don't see the yellow squash anymore... are you out? He said, Oh no - it's over on the other side now... So I went over and sure enough there was a couple of 12 packs of yellow squash. I grabbed one, plus a sweet red pepper, and went inside to get a few other things. I paid for my items, came home, put some rocks and some soil in those two trash cans and plopped each of my two new plants into one of them. Then I took the little ID tags to rinse off and put back in the pots and .... uh oh. We won't be having any yellow summer squash this summer. What we MIGHT be having, though I almost hope NOT, is cucumbers! ROFL! (PJ? Are you LOVIN' this???) I don't have to weed them down though - there's ONLY ONE! Oy vey!
Cucumbers? Now Melli is in a pickle!
Poor Jewlie. She doesn't look like she cares to have her nose cleaned.
AND, I always thought the lion's share was more than a fair amount -- and your illustration supports that theory!
LOL too funny. I love your idioms especially the lions share share and I think it ironic you ahve a zebra with the smaller piece.. All I wanna shout to him is Run Forrest Run LOL
Excellent post...
I'm with Quilly and Thom I thought the lion's share was the biggest part of something, not all of it! And I LOVE how you picture your idioms, especially the last one made me smile!! They show how much fun you are having doing these!! Loved it! Oh and cucumbers instead of yellow squash? How disappointing!
Love the lions share picture. Very origional. I love both cucumbers and yellow squash. Gotta say though on a hot summer day a cold cucumber with salt is excellent!
While I like summer squash, I make a kick ass cucumber salad that is perfect for summer meals. I can never seem to make enough for everyone.
Your idioms are excellent. We all want the lion's share.
love, love, LOVE Jewel's photo!
And more like the LIONESS' share around here. rofl. Bud's lucky if he even gets a whiff of the pies before I get ahold of 'em. [kidding of course, but I cut the pie, and I always get the first piece...the biggest of course]
Well....P J is gonna get a kick out of it all...but I did too. You're a hoot Melli.
Melli! HERE you are! I asked a few times where you had disappeared to. I'm starting to blog again and feel as though I'm following a bread crumb trail to old friends. I was at PJ's blog and there you were! And Amber Star! I've gotta go get ready for work now, but I'll be back soon to read and explore. You're invited to come see me at my blog if you'd like. :) So good to see you!
These were good Melli, I always seem to have problems keeping my nose clean.
My Haimish needs to have the Lion's Share and Wee Alexander is always giving in to him. Cats can be just like kids.
At first glance I thought Jewel was soapy -- therefore emphasizing the cleanness -- but is that the pattern of light hitting her or just her coloring?
Great illustrations of both idioms! I hadn't heard that lion fable though I knew what the idiom meant.
Someone should compile all these idiom illustrations into a book.
LOL about the cucumbers -- that sounds like something I'd do. We're not into cucumbers here, though -- they give me indigestion. I don't know what I'd do if I accidentally got a plant of them!
OK -- now I do see Jewel was in the tub and indeed soapy. Poor doggie! We have a half-collie, half-German Shepherd, and she just hates the water. She even runs to the other side of the yard when we turn on the hose to refill her water bowl. We don't bathe her inside -- she sheds so much we'd never get the drain unclogged.
I love, love, love your idioms! The lion's share still has me laughing. :)
Melli, I love these photos, they are soooo perfect for your choice of idioms today. I've played catch up, doing 2 weeks in one.
Gosh everythings making me hungry today. Shall I help myself to a lions share or will the lion bite lol
Nice:)
As usual the pictures fit perfectly with the sayings. You are so very creative.
Bucket cucumbers sounds like fun. Because of you we are taking the other tomato plants and putting them in a bucket just in case the hanging one finally fails.
You do such a good job with those idioms. I knew what a lion's share is but I did not know about the fable.
I like cucumbers but not ready to try to grow them.
By Blogger bettygram, at 6/03/2009 10:21 PM
Very creative idiom shots :)! Cucumber still make a good salad. LOL. Have a great day :)
