My Answer... and... Of Fall & Fleas
Yesterday I asked the question:IF you woke up tomorrow to find that cable/satellite no longer existed... somehow it was destroyed overnight... just flat out, not to be "fixed" in a week or two... but utterly completely wiped out... gonna take yeeeeeears to get up and going again... How would this affect you? NO more internet. NO more cable television. ???
Now I know I'm just a wee little blog and no one was really expected to get into the deeper side of this question... I just wanted to see what everyone would say. But I personally WAS thinking a bit beyond JUST the television and MY use of the computer.... (that's probably about as deep as I go!) and contemplating all the ways this really would affect me. Of course, I don't watch TV so that part didn't bother me a bit -- until I realized that I couldn't even turn on the NEWS to find out what had happened. And I couldn't go on line to find out either! And let's face it, if both cable AND satellite are down, radio is either not going to work - or they aren't going to have any more information than I do! Newspapers probably would not get printed... I'm not sure on that. I know they rely on the the internet to get their national and international news... and to relay stories back and forth from "the field". So, that is just the very FIRST thing I would notice. The next thing I would probably think about is how many friends I have just suddenly LOST. Almost ALL of you. There are only a few of you that I have postal addresses for, and even fewer that I have home phone numbers for. And oops! Now it just occurred to me that mostly I have cell phone numbers for you -- and if you have a number for ME it's MY cell phone. Without satellite we all just LOST our phone service! Now we not only can't get ahold of each other, we probably can't even get ahold of our closest loved ones! My son & daughter who don't live at home do NOT have a house phone! All they have is their cellular devices! So. The world just grew by leaps and bounds and now we can't just call our kids we have to get in the car and go to their home and hope they ARE home because we can't call ahead! BUT before we do that, better gas up the car. Oooooh no. All of our gas pumps are computerized these days.... do they rely on the INTERNET - or can the computer run them without cable or satellite? Hmmmm.... well... regardless of that -- IF I can get gas, do I have enough cash? I sure can't use my debit OR credit card! ANYwhere! Oh boy. My spending habits just changed drastically! Suddenly I have to live WITHIN my means! And I have to go to the BANK to get the money! I wonder how many things I can live without when it becomes THAT much trouble to get it!?
Now... it's not that we couldn't go BACK to house phones, cash & carry, old fashioned gas pumps, cash registers, etc.. etc... etc.... but even THAT would take time to switch back to! IF we lost our satellite/cable powers we would be SUNK! That would be a world wide catastrophe of enormous proportion! Air travel would STOP. I'm sure the shipping industry would be greatly effected too... trucking... everything. There is virtually NOTHING really that would NOT be horribly affected! Hospitals... shopping... travel... Schools... GOVERNMENT! Whoa! Everything would still operate to SOME degree... but it would not operate smoothly or efficiently for quite some time.
Well... as you can see... this question just BOGGLED my mind! But for now... I have bigger problems! Or more immediate problems I guess I should say...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
WANTED!
We are currently battling FLEAS at my house! Apparently they are a teeny tiny problem of HUGE magnitude this year in our area! Friends... I have had pets for decades and we have never had a flea! Not a single flea. I have always kept the animals well treated with tick and flea medication so that they have NEVER had to suffer this degradation. This year's flea doesn't seem to know the rules. THIS year's flea has actually invited itself INTO my home. I am NOT THAT CORDIAL!!! Now... I have heard horror stories about people who walk across the floor in white socks and are COVERED by little black jumpers... IF our problem EVER gets THAT bad I guarantee you I WILL burn the house down and insurance be damned! No... we're not that bad off! I haven't actually SEEN one except ON the dog who is scratching and yiping to beat the band! And the little black dots that fall off the cats when they are eating... I had Jewl dipped LAST Saturday - and then took her again yesterday. I thought I would do the two cats at home myself... neither one has EVER had a bath before. EVER. I started with Freedom knowing that while she has all of her claws - fronts and backs, she is the more docile of the two...WANTED!
She went in...
She stayed in...
She stayed in some more...They have to SIT with the stuff on for
FIVE MINUTES!!!
She came out!
That wasn't so bad.Next it was Big Kitty's turn. And honestly...
I anticipated exactly what happened!
He went in...
And for a split second I thought I MIGHT win... but no! He definitely had his mind set on SHREDDING me - and with just rear claws managed to draw blood in 3 places -- his TEETH were NOT getting me! He SHOT outta that sink like a cannon and water went EVERYWHERE!!! And YET... I had the nerve to try it ONE MORE TIME! It wasn't happening though! He is evil! You would never know it until you try to put him in water! I guess I'll be taking HIM to the vets! UGH!The saga continues....
I DID finish painting all the cabinet doors though!!! Whoooo hooo! Oh - Krysti's coming home tonight - just for the night! It seems she really REALLY misses her winter coats at college! LOL! She's coming home to get them! hehehe.... Bet she wishes she had one this morning!!!
This is the second flea post I have read today. My friend in Atlanta gave her cats the flea pills and they worked wonderfully.
I'd just have to shoot myself if we got fleas because I'd die. Anyway, hope you get it under control. The big thing is get the yard sprayed. You all won't get a frost for a while, and the animals will just pick them up and bring them back in.
Oh I hate those little buggers too!
Fleas can be the worst! They are hard to get rid of...I remember we used to use home remedies that worked pretty well when I was growing up...just can't remember exactly what they were!
That picture of the first cat after the first dip is hysterical...it looks like she wants to come out like a cannon too.
I'm impressed that you did this. I just send mine to have it done...cause I'm quite sure one of us would not make it through the ordeal...and that would not be good.
Hugs,
Susan
Lisa at Rambling Villas Girl has been posting about her battle with fleas!!
I have never had the horror and I am grateful. siren and mia would never be as good as either of your cats. siren wouldn't shoot out of the sink - he's get a gun and hunt me down ;)
I hope it all gets settled soon! Those photos made me exhausted for you.
Hugs to the kitties!!
Yep, it is getting to be winter coat weather, here, too!
Augh -- I hate fleas. We went to go look at a house that I think we had already agreed to buy at that point, and I don't think the electricity was on when we stopped to look at things -- maybe to get an idea for curtains or something, I don't remember. But we didn't realize til we saw fleas on our baby when we went to the grocery store afterward that there were any -- then we noticed they were on all of us -- ans we had someone coming by our home in just a little while to talk about insurance! What a nightmare. We scrambled home fast and changed and ran all of us through the shower in quick time. Since we weren't in the new house yet we were able to set off fleas bombs, and that pretty much took care of it.
I would hate to have to give a cat a bath. Maybe you need those protective sleeves like police dog trainers wear, LOL!
I think I mentioned Terri Blackstock's Restoration series yesterday. It talks about that exact same scenario only it is all electricity of any kind. Fascinating series -- I highly recommend it.
First, you painted a very black image of the world without satelite ! Now I will worry the whole day about ours here !!
Second, you cat torturer ! It is amazing that you are still alive ! My cats all together would have killed me ! I once gave Arthur a bath, but then he was a baby and had played under a car. He wasn't a white cat anymore but a black kitten. Today he could be black like a devil I wouldn't dare to give him a bath without knocking him out before ! There are stronger flea things on the market as Frontline. I use Frontline on all cats except Arthur he gets a stronger product because fleas love white fur and Frontline is not strong enough. I also suggest that all of you should wear black socks and not white once, then you don't see the fleas !
First, as I skimmed down to find the comment link, I noticed the RED hand dryer...whoa. Aren't YOU privileged? Around here in this ol' backwoods country there are only white ones. Now I'm gonna make sure I pay more attention...I want a red one too.
As for the internet going down, while I was reading your post...at the beginning, I was saying to myself...Anni, you'd use your cellphone. But now I see you say "No phones, no nothing"...well, there are smoke signals!! Guess I could blow up a puff of smoke now and then to wish all in blogland a good day. That's ONE BIG puff of smoke for "Good" and tiny one for "Day"...and blogland would be two real quick puffs of smoke!!!
Got it?
Despite all of that my trains would still run. I would, of course, miss my friends, not be able to call since our phone is through the Cable Company, but I still have my trains.
The good news is there are redundant satellites so that if one goes down another can take over.
Now, we don't have fleas and I'm still scratching. We don't have cats either and after your description I don't think we'll get one.
Glad the painting is done.
It was 28 degrees here this morning. I have to go out and get a flue shot.
Good morning Melli, Years ago we had a white Persian cat and Fred would bath our dog and cat every week..The Yorkie did fine with her bath,and the cat would behave for him . He bathed them in our big whirlpool tub and used the blow dryer to groom them..The cat knew that her turn was coming , when she saw the dog getting her bath.... too cute!!!
Fred said to get rid of fleas, you have to spray a chemical around the baseboards of your house.. it will need to be repeated, because other eggs will hatch again..Good luck with this problem...
Have a good day. Hugs, Baba
We have two cats and one dog and we have to work at this all the time! So far so good!
But last year it was horrible!!
What a post about losing the information Hwy! Whoa! When I was little we just had radio's and news papers, Crank phones that called central. Dad didn't get us a TV until 1955!
But now that we are used to all the wonders of the internet and our friends on it. I would hate to be with out my blogging friends! Hugs Grams
Wow, now that's a scary thought!!! Being without satelites I mean, that would be disastrous!
Every time I read here,you make me laugh and you make me giggle!That cat bathing story is hilarious again!
With pictures and everything! Too bad you did not get one of how your kitchen floor looked after that raging cat escaped from that bath, I know I would have!
You're my daily dose of good humour and optimism you are, I really love you for that Melli!
I recommend that you go get the book, "Last Light" by Terri Blackstock and read that..then you will see what it might be like without all the things that you mentioned. You will enjoy it for sure. There are 3 books but it starts with that one. REad it and then you can see what you are thinking about...Sandy
You had me laughing with your kitty baths. :-) I've tried that before and I know what they do. Seems like the most lazy and loving cats turn vicious when you stick 'em in water. :-)
I didn't have much use for the computer until I found blogs. I would miss the friends I have made. Maybe I would be visiting the senior centers Or do more at church.
As for flees we use I think is frontline every month. Maggie goes crazy when we put the stuff on. We put it on when she is in the gentle leader before her walk. the next time we go for a walk she hides. A bath wouldn't work either she doesn't do well there. Thursday she goes to Petko for bath etc and we are going to ave them put on the anti flee stuff. I wish you well on the fight. Good pictures.
Losing the internet would be like going back to the 50s or 60s like everyone is so nostalgic about. You would have to write letters to the people you know and want to let know how you all are doing, and you would have to buy stamps to mail all your bills, and instead of sitting around at midnight writing our blogs, we would have to be up and have everything ready for the neighbor women to drop in for coffee. I remember those days, and we were much closer to our neighbors, but I don't miss the kaffee klatch thing.
I wouldn't like losing the internet, because we use the thing all the time to check our memory and to check facts.
I thought I felt a flea the other day. They have that stuff you put on the back of the cat's neck that gets rid of the fleas. I am not brave enough these days to tackle a cat bath.
