Friday's Fave Five

Susanne at Living to Tell the Story hosts Friday Fave Five in which we share our five favorite things from the past week. Thank you Susanne for hosting this inspirational sharing game!

I have had a bit of a hard week, and was feeling a little stressed about sharing five favorite things from it! But one particular thing has tickled me silly this week - and so I decided to base my five on SOUNDS. Of course, not the normal sounds of music, laughter - things we all associate with good times! But just "sounds" that God has given me a special love for. Here we go!

1. Quiet. This really is my favorite sound. I love to sit quietly and listen to the quiet... and often hear His voice at those times too. Whispering, so as not to interrupt my quiet. He's very careful about that...

2. Coffee trickling through the coffee maker into the pot... and that final little puff (or spit as some might call it) that says DONE! I'm DONE!
(as a child one of my favorite sounds was the percolater perking the coffee! And I didn't even drink it back then!)

3.
Rain. Which of you does not already know that rain is a favorite sound of mine? Add to it THUNDER! Or hail! Or oh! How about wind! A howling wind! Any weather related sound I think. Icicles falling off the trees in winter.

4.
We live very near the Patuxent Naval Air Station. Most of the time we never even notice air traffic going in an out of there... I guess it has become a common place sound in today's world. But every now and then, we get one of two things. One is a verrrrry low flying, very LARGE aircraft, that just shakes the house! I'm sure that most of my neighbors find this critter QUITE disturbing... but I love him! The other is some kind of super HIGH flying (so high I can NEVER see it even on a crystal clear, not a cloud in the sky, day) jet. It's engines ROAR like ... I don't know what like! Like nothing I've ever heard before! Both of these aircraft send a little surge of excitement through my senses! I used to jump up and run outside to try to catch them before they got out of sight -- but I've learned that the one is never IN sight -- and the other moves way to quickly - even though it's a monster! I am really blessed when I happen to already BE outside and one goes over!

5. And the one that has tickled me silly!? Oh you're gonna LOVE this! It's ACORN season! And when I am in my room every now and then a few will fall off the tree over head and thunk thunk thunk thunk thunk down the roof and onto the ground! God has used those silly acorns to such His advantage this week to bring me back into a thankful moment - or simply to say "I love you".

What sounds do you just LOVE? What tickles your fancy?

Melli, I love this! Even when we are having a bad week, there is always SOMETHING to lift your spirits! Good for you that you found some ...

Actually, I can relate to loving some of these sounds as well. I love to hear rain. I think of it like blessings falling from the sky ... a drought really makes you appreciate the sound of rain.

And I love the sound of silence! It's so restful ... and I can certainly hear God better when it's quiet.

How sweet that you can hear God saying I Love You when you hear acorns fall!

I'm totally with you on #1,2, and 3.
#4 reminds me of when we lived near an air base that housed the B-52's. I can't say I loved the noise, but they were exciting to watch flying over. And number 5 has me smiling today!

If you love the sound of rain, then you should move to Belgium, your ears will get an overdose and you will get wet ! Impossible to listen to the silence in this house, as Mr. G. speaks loud (as all Italians he can't whisper) with the cats !

Quietness is one of my favorite sounds as well. Not all the time. But more of it than most people, or at least the rest of the family likes.

I like a steady rain with no lightening or thunder, but I don't like thunder and howling winds. My husband loves to go outside and watch a good storm.

I like the smell of coffee brewing more than the sound.

Had to smile at the acorns falling. :-)

One of my favorite sounds is my boys' sleepy headed "Good morning."

And though I don't often like machine sounds, I often enjoy it when the dishwasher, washer, and dryer are all humming along. I guess it makes me feel like I ma getting things done -- even though the machines are doing most of the work!

Quiet, rain and dropping nuts are all favorites of mine, too.

I love your theme of sounds. Quietness is one of my all time favorites as well. My husband and I were talking this week about the unmistakable sound a sword makes (we were watching “Prince Caspian”). It sounds so strong and powerful.

Rain? Haven’t heard that sound much lately. I noticed at the grocery store today that before the little sprinklers came on over the vegetables, that they played a little “thunder” sound. I thought that was so cute.

How attentive you are to God's voice, hearing him raini acorns down to say “I love you!” You are blessed. And I am blessed that you found these 5 favorites to share with us even after a difficult week. Praying next week will be a better one for you.

ONe thing is for sure, you can't tell from your post you have had a hard week. Mom would have said someone else has it harder, she was never one to pass out a little empathy. I'm the sappy one on the other hand. I got a fortune cookie this week that I would love to give to you. It reads,"your gracious kindness will return"

Your post is rewarding. The acorns however leave a different message when you are hit by one.

Your post brought a smile to my face Melli! Sorry you've had a hard week but you couldn't tell from this joyful "sounding" post. Thanks for blessing me with it.

I love all of those, except sorry to say the wind. I live in one of the windiest cities in Canada and sometimes it will go hard for days and days on end. But the rest? I'll take any day. :v)

When I come home and pull into the garage, and I open the car door and I can hear the dackels dancing in delight above my head in the family room!

so funny about the acorns because just this morning, while sitting outside the classroom in our little school courtyard, with the 4 "special needs" children playing in sandbox, one little guy asked what the funny sound was...come to find out, there were acorns dropping down off the tree (it was a very windy, warm day here in NYS) near where he was playing. I also LOVE the sound of fresh perked coffee!!
Enjoy your weekend...God bless you!

Sorry that you had a tough week Melli - praying for a better one coming up.

The sound of waves is my favourite- especially if I'm down or tired. It's very soothing!

melli are we long lost sisters?

i so love all the sounds you listed too. coffee trickling in a quiet kitchen? heaven...

an air force base is with in say, 15 miles of here and each day...sonic boom! love it!

acorns, it just isn't a good fall day without hearing a few drop!

melli, i hope we get to meet in person one day. i think we will have a blast!

I have a favorite sound, besides the rain, and quiet, moving trains.

I actually miss hearing the fighter planes from Nellis. They roar overhead and blank out every other sound in the universe, but they signify freedom to me and hearing them always filled me with an appreciation for my freedoms. during the "no fly" days after 9-11 the skies were quiet. It was extremely unsettling. After the ban was lifted and the fighters roared overhead again for the first time, tears came to my eyes.

I love all of these sounds too. Rain on a warm afternoon with the kitchen busy, and yes, the sound of an aircraft -- tells me it's holiday time! Love your faves, Melli.
