Random Dozen

Hosted by:
Lidna at 2nd Cup of Coffee

1. What is one really fast, know-by-heart "go-to" meal to fix in a pinch?

Almost all of my meals are like that! I'm a very simple cook. Dennis grills our fish or meat most nights, and I just make a baked potato and a vegetable to go with it. If I happen to need something faster than that, it must be McDonalds!

2. What is one item you won't leave home without. (Purse and license do not count.)

My camera. You NEVER know when you're going to see something that MUST be photographed.

3. Where is one place you never tire of visiting?

Church! And the beach! (I can't decide on one.)

4. Share one factoid of your family's history.
We have lived in the same house for 23 years. My younger children grew up in ONE home.

5. Complete this sentence: "Once upon a time I ....was the girl in the Dunk Tank at the Fireman's Carnival."

6. If you could win a one year's supply of anything, what would it be?

NOT laundry detergent! That's for sure! I think probably gasoline! I like to GO!

7. "One quirky thing you may not know about me is .... I only brush my teeth with warm water."

8. You have one dollar in your pocket. What will you buy?

I won't buy. I'll probably give it away.

9. "One thing that always makes me laugh is ....
Something FUNNY! (duh!)"

10. What is one thing you could do today to help yourself reach a personal goal?

Exercise. (done)

11. What is one thing you could do today to bless someone else?

Ohhhhhhh just any little random act of kindness... do you want me to PICK one? Okay... I'm going to the library... I'll give the librarian $10 to pay late fines for people until the money runs out.

12. What is one thing you're looking forward to soon?
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL!!! I cannnnnnnn't WAIT!!!

Fun Monday - Shoes!

I can DO shoes! Oh My Darlin' Thom is hosting Fun Monday this week, and he wants to know about our shoes. Well... LIKE Thom, I absolutely HATE wearing shoes! BUT... I love HAVING shoes! Of course... I do only buy the ones I'll wear... so I don't have ANY of the ones I'd REALLY like to have!

Like THESE!!!

Do not think for ONE minute that if I had skinny little legs, with sexy little ankles that I would NOT have these shoes, because I would have every one of them, plus many more!!! I LOOOOOVE shoes! (I did used to have some really CUTE shoes when I was young and stylish!) My feet, unfortunately, HATE shoes. And there is NO reasoning with them! I say "oh LOOK Feet! These are sooooooooo cute!"... and Feet say "OWWWW! They hurrrrrrrrt!" in that Oh-So whiny way they have! I say "LOOK Feet! They are beautiful turquoise and royal... and they match my Easter dress PERFECT!" And Feet say... "If you DARE squish me into those and contort my arches into completely inhuman form, I will not ONLY swell and spill out through the toes and over the edges, but I will CRAMP and make you RUE the day you bought them!" *sigh*... you can't argue with feet like that! And so...

I have these.
Feet LOVES these!
Me? Not so much...

And I have these.
By the way... for the record... I threw away 8 pairs of
flip-flops a few weeks ago. I'm still in the process of
replacing them. Both of these brown pairs need to GO
as well... but for now, they stay until I find suitable
replacements.

Of course, in the winter if I want to wear a dress, I can't wear
flip-flops with it... and so

I have black or brown all purpose shoes.
1. 2. 3... "HOW EXCITING!"
*rolls eyes*
(blame Feet!)

Fortunately, I am occasionally allowed to buy something that
jussssssst happens to suite Feet and ME!

These work kinda nicely!
At least they match a few outfits!

And THESE babies are ALL about comfort while walking!
I mean like exercise walking!
They are TOTALLY WEIRD for regular walking or just
boppin' around in... you definitely wouldn't want to go hiking
in them! But for walking... around a track or out on the road...
they are awesome! I love them!
(of course, I have fallen arches - and because of the rocker
thing on the bottom, they really push my arch up - it just
feels goooooood!) Feet likes them!

So... now you know more than you ever wanted to know
about Me, Feet and my shoes!

What are YOU wearin' these days... link up with
Thom and let us know!

Flashback Friday...

Linda from Mocha With Linda hosts this meme.
Come on and play!

This week Linda asks...

How old were you when you got your first (paying) job? Did you work during the school year? What stipulations, if any, did your parents put on spending, saving, etc.? What types of jobs did you have before you were, oh, 21 or 22? Did you go to college or a technical/trade school? If so, did you work while you were pursuing your post-high school education? What were your favorite -- and least favorite, if you wish to share! -- jobs? What did you learn from those early jobs?

Well... I spent most of my teenage years being a verrrrrrrry well paid babysitter! When other girls were making $2 - $2.50 an hour, MOST of my families were paying me $4-$5/hour! And I had 4 families that kept me booked up on Friday and Saturday nights for so long I might NEVER have dated had I not moved away the day after I graduated! Then I also had a "group" of families that paid me to watch ALL of their children together while they played golf on Saturday mornings ... through late afternoon. LOL! For that I was given $20/hour! Hey, I was 16-17 years old -- I hadn't learned how to NOT have patience yet! I loved kids and they loved me, and it was a winning situation for everyone involved! I had 8 kids between 1 and 7 years old and we had a blast!

But for SOME reason... I'll never fathom why... in the Autumn of my 16th year, I decided I should get "a real job". This was CRAZY because there was NO WAY "a real job" was going to pay me what I was making babysitting! But I guess I figured I could do this during the week, after school (although I had an after school babysitting job too...) and make even more money! I dunno. But I got a job working at People's Drug Store - behind the soda fountain. I hated that job! I hated the woman who ran the soda fountain. I hated the man who managed the drug store. And I hated the people who ate there who were NEVER satisfied no matter how hard you tried to please them! BUT... I was not a quitter! For sOMe reason (probably peer pressure!) I wanted a REAL job! I vividly remember that I had to give up SOME of my babysitting jobs to satisfy their work schedule -- and I sure didn't like that! THEY were only paying me minimum wage which was $1.60 at the time! AND taking taxes out of it! BUT... I was NOT a quitter! Soooooooooo needless to say... I was absolutely THRILLED when they put me on the schedule to work THANKSGIVING DAY! I knew... there was NO WAY this side of Heaven, that my mother was going to allow me to go to work on Thanksgiving Day! LOL! I told the woman I couldn't do it. She said "You'll do it." I told the manager "I can't do it." He said "You better." And so the day after Thanksgiving I went into work, and they said "You're Fired." And that was the END of my first "real job". I went back to babysitting... making the big money!

Now, the sad part about all this is, that when I graduated from high school 2 years later and moved out of my mother's house the next day -- and moved several states away -- I got my first REAL real job. The kind where you are dependent on it to pay the bills! By then the minimum wage had been raised to $2.10/hour and I was VERY fortunate fresh out of high school and NOT attending college to land a job paying a WHOPPING $3.25!!! I was a telecommunications clerk. That turned out to be a fancy schmancy name for mail clerk/telex operator! I LOVED that job! It was a great job! I got a little apartment - my rent was $450/month! You do the math! Overtime wasn't an option. My little apartment lasted about 4 months before I was starving and looking for a roommate! Boy, I wished I could go back to babysitting for a living! It doesn't work like that ... then it's called Day Care! Ya need a license and ya gotta pay taxes... it was a learning time of life... that's for sure!

Friday Fave Five

Susanne at Living to Tell the Story hosts Friday Fave Five in which we share our five favorite things from the past week. Thank you Susanne for hosting this inspirational sharing game!

1. Friday I got to...

Help HER make Mother's Day gifts!

2. Saturday we had these...

And even though he's not hers... not ours...
she just babysits him...

I fell in love!
Holding him was such a lovely way to spend an afternoon!

Play this!
THROW that ball in girl!
This time the won!

So, despite the fact that I woke up with a sore throat

I had to LOVE this...

It just made me SMILE!

And it's not a fluke!

God actually PLANNED it!

Yea... I believe there's a purpose for everything...
even if it's JUST to make me smile.

Random Dozen

Hosted by:
Lidna at 2nd Cup of Coffee

1. Please share one memory of your high school graduation. Pics would be great!
The best memory of High School graduation was that I had plane tickets in hand and would be moving to Minnesota the next day!

2. What is one "emergency use" item you keep in your vehicle at all times?
I have nothing. I'm sure I should have a white rag at least... OH! I have a jack! For changing the tire! I'm not sure I could FIND it... and I'd have to empty my trunk first... Oh dear...

3. In your region, do you celebrate graduation open houses? Addendum: (If so,) how many open houses/bridal showers/weddings are on your upcoming events calendar?
Not a single one!

4. Tell me one truth you believe about motherhood.
It is the greatest gift God ever gave to women.

5. What was the last thing you broke?
My toenail. Ouch!

6. On average, how many pieces of junk mail do you receive daily?
I have no idea anymore. Hubby usually checks the mail and I just get what's mine! No junk for me!

7. Do you like to shop by catalog?
I like to look through them, but unless they have a website, I'm not going to do the whole mail-order thing. Now... on-line shopping -- that's a whole 'nuther story! I can safely say I do MOST of my shopping on-line these days! And honestly - referring back to Question #6 - I don't GET any catalogs anymore... except Oriental Traders... My favorite VBS tool!

8. Is lawn maintenance at your house a "his job," a "her job" or "his/her job" or "that's why we have teenagers" job?
Lawn maintenance is his job! Planting it is MY job. Planting anything is MY job... which I'm sure is why it all dies... I'm a GREAT planter! I'm not such a great maintainer...

9. Which room would you like to redecorate in your home?
Well, not the kitchen - it's perfect! And the living room is okay... I would like new FURNITURE for it... but, yea, the whole "the dog must die" thing... I'm not ready for that! Sooooo... oh! Derek's old room! I NEED to get on that! He moved out 7 months ago and I haven't touched it yet!

10. Do you read a newspaper regularly, or do you read most of your news on line?
On line. Which reminds me... I really need to cancel the weekDAY paper...

11. Do you believe everything happens for a reason?
Yep! God has a plan and everything is a part of it.

12. Are you more worried about doing things right, or doing the right things?
Definitely doing the right things! But I like to do the right things RIGHT! Right?

A New Baby In The Neighborhood...

Yep! We have a new baby!
A little boy...

He likes to stay very near his Mama...

VERY near...
I'm pretty sure she's already tired of having him under-hoof!

Occasionally he gets too tired to keep up though...

And I can finally get a shot of him by himself!

Black horses, like black dogs, are very HARD to get good photographs of!
He's fun to have around though... we enjoy watching his progress!

One of the tulips Mathew brought me for Mother's Day -
and the variegated plant behind it was from Amanda!
Both are beauuuuutiful!

Well... I told you how plans change quickly around here! I woke up Sunday morning with a SORE THROAT! Ugh! I was just sure satan was sabotaging my efforts to teach lead this Sunday School class! But I tricked him! I got up and went ANYway! I did catch a really long nap yesterday afternoon though! The class went well ... I only had 5 people. Our parking lot was sparce for the late service - I think lots of people had plans for Mother's Day! Pastor's marriage class was light too. I'm betting I pick up more people next week. The class runs for 6 weeks.

I am still feeling pretty bad today so I'm going to be taking another nap this afternoon. Exercise is not EVEN an option today! It's very unfortunate that I am the opposite of most people... when I am sick I just want to EAT all day long! I want something CONSTANTLY going down my throat... I do NOT know why... This has always driven me crazy! Other people get sick and actually lose weight from it... I usually gain something when I'm sick. Not a LOT ... but it's just the point... it's nuts! And I realllllllllllllly want "comfort food" - which is never healthy! So far I've done okay ...

Mom was talking this morning about going down the road to catch the bus! Dennis has installed chain locks on all the doors -- all the way at the top. She can't reach them without a stool, and I don't think she would think to get a stool. I'm pretty sure if she did, by the time she found one she would forget that she even wanted it. Or what she wanted it for. Sometimes that lack of memory works in our favor! I really appreciate all of your concern, but no... it is still not time for her to go into a home. I seriously doubt that I will allow that until she is bed-bound. When it comes time for bed pans and changing sheets with a body still laying on them -- that is when it will be time! But for now, it is still just a nuisance and not intolerable. I still have my sense of humor! Most of the time. :)

My baby grass has all come up and is looking good! I think it's time to plant another batch! My radishes are almost ready for harvest... I can't tell you how disappointed I was to find out that you only get ONE radish per seed! I don't know WHY I thought they would grow a whole clump of them! I should have been thinking "like carrots, like carrots"!!! LOL! I'm a nut! What can I say? Oh well.

Y'all have a great day!

A Mother's Day,,, of sorts!

Ohhhhhhhhhh PEOPLE! Life is taking a turn! This has been ONE of the busiest weeks of my life... with THE busiest week yet to come... and Mom is losing ground again. She has sloooooowed almost to a halt. Getting her across a parking lot has become an all day affair. Yesterday I was serving Mother's Day Brunch to the Preschooler's and their Mom's at church, and fortunately I always allow myself PLENTY of time - but Mom was moving ever so slowly - I really wanted to take her hand and DRAG her but I didn't! I turned around though and said "c'mon Mom... pick it up - just a LITTLE..." and she said, "well, these dogs keep runnin' in and out of my legs!" People, there weren't ANY dogs in the neighborhood! There weren't even any crickets or grasshoppers! I'm not sure - there MIGHT have been some ants! Oy VEY!

We are also having bladder issues. Or pants issues. We're not sure WHAT is causing it - sometimes her pants are wet - and sOmetimes her bed is wet - but MANY times everything is DRY - but virtually EVERY morning we have a naked from the waist down Mom wandering the house! This is a scary sight to wake up too, let me tell you! It takes you out of that sleep stupor post haste! I wish it took her out of HER stupor! I don't know WHY I bother to ask her why her pants are off... but excuses can be anything from "he was holding me down and wouldn't let me get up!" to "well, I thought the others were comin' along behind me..." to "because I couldn't find that cup." ??? "Which cup Mom?" "THAT one right THERE!" *points to cup* Oh... well... it's right there! Put your pants on!

This morning she is sO out of it that when I asked her why her pants were off (and laying over the kitchen trashcan, by the way) she did not even recognize that I was speaking to her. Her head did not turn in my direction, and she just continued to gaze off into space. I moved myself so I was right smack in front of her and spoke again. She looked up at me but no lights were coming on. I had to literally YELL her name to get her attention! And not Mom -- I had to say LOUISE! However, once I had her attention, it only took us an hour to get pants, shirt, and shoes on her. And a little while ago she told Dennis and I that "those sure are some pretty flowers coming up out there on the plantation." She was pointing to the "deck", of course! I was IMPRESSED she thought up plantation though! That's a BIG word for her!

Sooooooo... WE are celebrating Mother's Day here TODAY! The kids are coming over this afternoon and Dennis is picking up a bushel of crabs, and we are just going to relax and eat and talk and laugh... We're doing it today because Mathew has to work tomorrow and on Saturday Amanda won't be in a hurry to leave to get Luz home for bed for school the next day.

So, this is the last day of my immediate business! After church tomorrow I will have time to come visit EVERYBODY and get all caught up with y'all! I think! (things pop up out of nowhere these days..... I think I have a certain block of time to get "this" done, and all of a sudden whoooops it's gone! and I'm rearranging my schedule again...) But I AM coming around now to see some of you - right now!

Random Dozen

Hosted by:
Lidna at 2nd Cup of Coffee

1. What was the last thing about which you procrastinated?

I procrastinate daily about getting on the bike! Sometimes I procrastinate long enough that it doesn't actually happen! I have also procrastinated getting started on this class I'm leading starting THIS SUNDAY, and I've somewhat procrastinated starting to get organized for VBS too.

2. How long does it take you to fall asleep, and do you sleep through the night?
I am usually asleep within 5 minutes after I turn out the light. I do not sleep straight through because there is a restroom break somewhere between 2:00 and 5:00 a.m!

3. Which decade would you choose to exemplify your favorite fashion styles?

None of them! Fashion is NOT me!

4. What is your personal best dish to feed a crowd?

Depends. Is this breakfast, lunch or dinner? Or simply appetizers? I really don't HAVE a personal best dish... and I generally don't do "crowds"... other than family. I am going to be providing dinner for the women's shelter next month, and I'm trying to come up with something "different" to take to them! Apparently they get a lot of soups and casseroles... I'm thinking .... STEAMED SHRIMP! LOL!

5. Are you an impulse shopper? What was the last thing you bought on impulse?

I AM an impulse shopper! (bad, bad, BAD!) I bought some summer outdoor toys for Luz a few days ago.

6. What is one wish you have for your own funeral?

Lots of GREAT PRAISE songs!!! And I hope Pastor Paul is still living because that man LOVES to preach a funeral! (captive audience!) And I want an altar call!

7. If it's true that joy is in found in the simple things in life, what does your joy look like today?
Today my (well, I'm typing this yesterday) ... but today my joy was helping my friend Dawn set up 7 prayer portals for our special service at church tonight. (tonight tonight - Wednesday!) WE are having OUR National Day of Prayer service tonight!

8. What is your favorite type of bread?

Really, really REALLY favorite would be piping hot, fresh out of the oven dark German bread! But for day-to-day sandwiches or toast I prefer rye or pumpernickel.

9. What trait do you fear developing the most? (Laziness, greediness, grumpiness, etc.)

Bitterness. Please, God... Please... don't EVER let me be a bitter person!

10. What trait would you like most to develop?

Compassion, TRUE love, Patience, Self-control... Pick a gift! Any gift of the Spirit!

11. Which room in your house best reflects your personality? Why?

Mmmmm.... either my kitchen or my living room. They are BOTH very beachy - but one is wild and fun and the other is soft and quiet.

12. How do you maintain balance in your life regarding, work, family, church, other organizations and activities, and blogging?
Well... I quit my job... and the rest I am trying to figure out even as I type! It's a task and a half sometimes - that's for SURE! Which is why I'm not linking up today - because I REALLY don't have time to come around and PLAY. (and it's not fair to ask people to come see ME if I'm not going to see them!)

Stuff... just stuff...

This is going to be a CRAZY week for me! I have church or Bible study stuff going on EVERY single day annnnnnnnd I have to prepare to begin teaching my adult Sunday School class this week ... AND we are celebrating Mother's Day on Saturday instead of Sunday... and I just have a LOT to do! So I don't know how much I'm going to be around... just lettin' ya know. I'll pop into YOUR stuff as I can... it's probably more MY blog that's going to suffer... *shrug*... that's the way it goes sometimes!

Had a GREAT Sunday this week! We had a baby shower for BirthRight at church yesterday inbetween the services, and I served at the reception. TONS of stuff was collected and delivered to BirthRight yesterday afternoon! AWESOME! Then music and sermon was outstanding yesterday! And then I spent the afternoon with Amanda & Luz - we had a picnic at Quiet Waters and then walked one of the trails and then played at the playground. Amanda and I had some really good "quality" time together... and I stayed and had dinner with them. I stuck to my diet and got some exercise and LIFE WAS GOOD! Got to see Mathew long enough to give him a hug, and then scoot home!

Now I gotta run! I'll be around later! :o)
