Friday Feast # 170

Appetizer
What is your favorite carnival/amusement park ride?
Oh, without a doubt it's ROLLER COASTERS!!! And I don't mind the hanging ones that flip you around and upside down and all that -- but my all time favorites are the old wooden roller coasters -- however, there is one exception! I LOVE the Superman roller coaster at Six Flags America -- it's steel - but it is just ups and downs - no loops -- but that first drop will knock your socks off!!! Maaaaaaaaaan I LOVE that coaster!

Soup

How do you react in uncomfortable social situations?
Good grief! Could this question be any more vague? It would totally depend upon WHAT the uncomfortable situation was. Are we talking a funeral? A State dinner at the White House? Or simply a slip of the tongue at a PTA meeting? There are as many different types of "uncomfortable situations" as there are people! I can't possibly answer this!

Salad

On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being highest, how much do you enjoy discussing deep, philosophical topics?
Depends on my mood and who I'm with. Sometimes I enjoy it a great deal... sometimes my head is just full of FLUFF and I just want everything light and breezy!

Main Course

Did you get a flu shot this year? If not, do you plan to?
I have not yet -- nor have I ever, actually. But YES - I do intend to this year! I admit I am a little bit scared... you know ... you hear those stories... but I AM going to do it!

Dessert

Approximately how many hours per week do you spend watching television?
Whoooo hooo! Easiest question EVER!!! I spend ZERO hours watching tv! I spend ZERO minutes watching tv!!! I usually don't even walk into the same room where the tv IS! LOL!

In case you missed it...
look below...
I MET LUZ YESTERDAY!!!

TODAY was the day!!!

WHAT A GLORIOUS DAY!!!

Nana Meets Luz Estrella!!!
(see the whole story HERE)

Labels:

Thursday 13... In Which Nana Explodes!

13 reasons why this Nana might explode before the weekend!

1. Luz Estrella has been on Maryland soil for a whOle day and I have not met her yet...

2. PopPop has installed a carseat in my vehicle ... but I haven't gotten to try it out yet...

3. There is a Dora The Explorer talking noise making Big Wheel tricycle living in my garage... but no one has pedaled it yet.

4. The fact that it is supposed to be a Christmas present is totally irrelevant. It might actually make it to Christmas! (could happen)

5. Though I nearly NEVER need to go shopping in the town where Luz lives, I suddenly find I have 15 million things I NEED to go there for...

6. But I'm putting them off until I'm allowed to stop in at Amanda's apartment.

7. The mailman keeps delivering boxes.

8. And the contents are all for a certain little girl...

9. I really NEED to come up with a list for the OTHER members of my family...

10. ... who might be dreadfully disappointed if they were to receive Alexander and the Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day for Christmas...

11. ... but I can't seem to think of anything anyone else would possibly want this year...

12. ... except to see Luz get EVERYTHING! LoL... (it IS funny... right?)

13. Redheads are prone to spontaneous combustion. It's true. And did I mention Luz has been in town almost MORE THAN 24 hours... and I haven't seen her yet?! Haven't even heard her voice!

And the not so wordless...

I know you're all waiting for pics of Luz and I meeting... but I actually have mentioned a few times that I don't get to meet her YET. Amanda & Hector want a few days at home with her to get settled in and see how she adjusts before introducing the rest of our crazy family into the mix! I don't blame them a bit. And when I DO finally meet Luz - which I'm sure will come about totally unexpectedly on MY part... you know... y'all will be the FIRST to know!!! ;)

FIGHTING with God...

** Update** - Thank you - for all your comments and for your emails too. But mostly for your prayers! I am no longer fighting with God. God and I are back to our original understanding. (but Pastor Paul and I may have to agree to disagree ... ) *whew*

A Question For All My Christian Friends...

How many of you have ever had a FIGHT with God? (that's not my question... it's just "a" question) Right now God and I are having a major argument. As a matter of fact, I'm not even speaking to Him! Have you ever gotten THAT mad at Him? (that's not my question either...) I'm actually assuming that most of you have. My question IS: What do YOU do when you get that angry with God? When you get SO angry that you CAN'T even pray!? What do you do?

I'll tell you what I've done. First I stewed in it for 4 or 5 days. With that I just kept getting angrier and angrier. THEN I started asking friends to pray FOR me. I figured if I can't pray for my own commen sense, then maybe my friends can do it for me! We all know that if I'm not talking to God, it's certainly not HIS fault now is it??? No... of course it's not. He's standing right there with his hand out saying "C'mon Melli... TALK to me... We can work it out." And if HE's doing that, then we knOw who the stubborn one is here - right? Just nod.... I'm not listening anyway...
But HE is. HE hears ya! And I'm starting to think that maybe it's not HIM I'm so mad at anyway... Maybe it's the humans that put their words and their values in God's mouth and mind. Maybe they are the ones I'm really mad at. Because after all... God is GOD... and NObody can tell HIM what to do.

Let's Make A Deal! (what's in your purse?)

THE OLD AND THE NEW OF IT

Remember that game show? Boy! The more stuff you could fit in your bag, the better for you! Ya never knew what Monte Hall was gonna ask for next! Well... my bag isn't as bad as all that... but Hubby does call it my "filing cabinet"... *sigh* Ya know, it wasn't so many years ago that I didn't carry a purse at all! I was down to just a wallet and my keys! And my keys were actually attached to my wallet -- so IT was my keyring! It was little. LOL! So HOW did it get back to THIS???

THIS was my old ugly purse! The one I quit carrying yesterday!
You can see, I kept a lot of stuff in it... IMPORTANT stuff!
my Wallet
my checkbook
deposit slips
index study cards
(with Bible verses)
my cell phone
my camera
(don't leave home without it!!!)
my keys
key to Hub's truck
5 pens
a Tide stain remover
3 lipsticks
1 gloss
FOUR chapsticks
a compact
(for mirror puposes only)
a little bit of change
my darling Luz
a button from our Harley Plant tour

So, you see? I ONLY carry the necessities of life!
LOL!

Amanda and I went shopping yesterday. We had sO much fun! It was her first time out to buy ANYthing for Luz! I was amazed! I'm tellin' ya -- she's known that baby was coming since BEFORE September, and she had not bought so much as a barrette for her hair! But yesterday was THE day. Amanda was going "clothes shopping" for Luz -- and I was invited to come along! Saturday, she and Hector are going TOY shopping for Luz. I was VERY good yesterday -- I only bought her one more pair of jammies and ONE little T-top. (it said "I'm just PERFECT, that's all" on it -- don't even TRY to tell me she doesn't NEED it!) But, I'm getting off track - because the thing is is that I bought a NEW purse! A smaller purse.

I LOVE this purse!!!
And as you can see... I had to wittle down the contents a
bit... and it's a very tight squeeze to get it all in! I need a
smaller (flat) wallet that can hold my checkbook too! I
found one I LOVED yesterday - but it was as much as the
purse. So I decided I'll go to WALMART today and settle
for a CHEAP wallet!!! And I might lose the compact! LOL!

Okay... so do ya WANNA see what Amanda bought too? I know you do! She was soooooo cute! When we got home from shopping, first she started laying everything out on the floor!

And then she got it all arranged into her favorite formations
of how the outfits would be... not that they can't mix n match
in multitudinous ways!

And then...

she layed back on Luz's bed to just ADMIRE her purchases!
(and dream about little Luz wearing those darling outfits!)

Oh. We were SUPPOSED to buy the dust ruffle for Luz's bed yesterday - but we got sidetracked and forgot! So she'll get that tomorrow. And the comforter was in the dryer - so it's not on the bed yet! But let me tell ya -- the room is together! By the time they leave for the airport Monday morning, that room will be picture perfect for Luz to come home to the following Tuesday!

Friday Feast # 169 ... & ... Aloha Friday!

wanna play?

Appetizer
What was your first “real” job?
I was 18 years old, right out of High School, and I was a Mail Clerk for Bemis Co., Corporate Offices in Minneapolis.

Soup
Where would you go if you wanted to spark your creativity?
Honestly? I don't have to GO anywhere! My creativity can be sparked just visiting in my own brain! But ... if you wanna SEND me someplace... I'm thinking Greece might be REAL inspirational!!!

Salad
Complete this sentence: I am embarrassed when…
Ya know what? Life is way too short to get embarrassed about stuff! I used to get embarrassed about forgetting peoples names, or if I did something klutzy... but I've discovered that everybody forgets names and everyone's a klutz sometimes! I just don't let it bother me anymore! Now... I do stupid stuff... and people laugh! But I laugh too! So that's not really bein' embarrassed, is it?!

Main Course
What values did your parents instill in you?
OY! Boy, is that the wrong question! You know... I just honestly can't answer this. I'm not sure my parents gave me anything. Actually... yes they did. The fact that they told us nothing lead me to be open and straight with my own kids. And the fact that they wanted nothing to do with us made ME determined to be a HUGE part of my kids lives. So I guess by example, they taught me NOT to be like them. (sorry... I know that's NOT the "feel good" answer that you were lookin' for!)

Dessert
Name 3 fads from your teenage years.
Mini skirts, Floppy hats, patchy jeans -- I was a teen in the FIRST hippie era! You know ... the REAL one!

The Rules: Very simple really. Just visit Kailani and answer HER question in her comments. Sign her Mr. Linky thing, and then go post a question on your blog for others to come answer in your comments! Of course, if you don't wish to do all that, you can just answer MY question in MY comments! ;)

My Question Is:

What was the first "major purchase" you made after
moving out on your own?

My Answer is:

A color television set.
This cracks me up NOW, because I do not watch television at all. But honestly... I didn't buy it for ME! I bought it the year Amanda was 3 and it was getting close to Christmas and all the holiday shows were getting ready to come on -- remember - this was back BEFORE VCR's!!! I did NOT want her to miss out on those shows! LOL! So, it was only a little 13" television - but I had to take out a loan for it! It was $325!!! I could have gotten a B+W one for a lot cheaper -- but what good was Rudolph in black and white??? LOL!

Come back this afternoon and I'll show you
WHAT was in my old purse... and
how I wittled it down to fit in my
NEW purse!!!

Me? Random??? Nah!

I have been tagged to be random again! I wonder what I can come up with THIS time! *grin*
Gill got me this time - from over at Gills Jottings!

Soooooooo, since I don't follow the rules, I'm not going to list them! But the bottom line is... I have to tell SEVEN random things about me. ( The rule I don't follow is about tagging others... so... if you WANT to - play along!)

Here's mine:

1. When I was in 3rd grade I came down with chicken-pox after I had gotten to school - on the morning of the Christmas party! The teacher knew that's what they were - but she didn't send me home. She figured the damage had already been done, so she moved my desk over to one side of the room, and all the other desks over to the other side - and I got to stay and enjoy the party! LOL! That was about the last thing I enjoyed for a couple of weeks! I had a WHOPPIN' case of them! Covered... head to toe... inside and out!

2. I do not like to wear coats. At the moment I still don't even OWN a coat - well, not one that fits me anyway. The last coat I had is now 3 sizes too big! But I haven't bothered to buy another because I really don't like them anyway and will do almost ANYTHING to get out of wearing one - including to shiver for 10 or 15 minutes if I must, to get from point A to point B if it's that cold! I'm always in big trouble if it snows because I'm totally unprepared for it! *ahem*... I'm not a big fan of boots either!

3. When I was young (very young... like 12) I used to want to have a dozen children! I don't know what I was thinking! No... I didn't want them because I wanted SO MANY children -- I wanted them because I had SO MANY names that I liked - and I needed at least a dozen kids so that I could use up all my names! Fortunately for me, God does not listen to such silly wishes - because now at 50 I would need about 100 children to use up all the names I like!!! ROFL!

4. When I was pregnant with Amanda I craved Arby's coleslaw and Fig Newton cookies. When I was pregnant with Mathew I craved cantaloupe with cottage cheese. And with the twins I just craved popsicles.

5. My kids are all coming for supper tonight. Amanda is bringing the main course - some kind of barbeque sandwich on Kaiser rolls. She's got it in the crock pot while she's at work! I've got to go get busy on the side dishes!

6. My favorite children's poet is (was) Shel Silverstein. And this is one of my favorite poems of his!
The Voice
by Shel Siverstein

There is a voice inside of you
That whipsers all day long,
"I feel that this is right for me,
I know that this is wrong."
No teacher, preacher, parent, friend
Or wise man can decide
What's right for you -- just listen to
The voice that speaks inside.

7. There are currently 37 items sitting on my computer desk. (NOT counting all the pens in my pen cup!) Only about 5 of them belong here! So, now I'm done computing for the morning and I'm going to go get busy and take care of things that while probably are not nearly as important as YOU my dear blog friend, are still, nonetheless in need of being done!!!

Have a GREAT day!
(((Hugs!)))

Fun Monday!

This Fun Monday is brought to you
courtesy of Hootin' Anni!

Anni's instructions to us today were to take 30 GIANT steps in any direction, going through doors, or turning at walls. When you reach your destination look straight ahead and take a picture of what you see. Then take 15 BABY steps back in the other direction. When you get there, look straight ahead and take a picture of what you see. So...

I started out from my computer. I took 30 giant steps, which took me into the kitchen, turn left, go through the kitchen and wee hallway, turn left, go through the family room, turn left, up two steps (one GIANT step), turn left and up a flight of steps, turn left into my bedroom. *SNAP* Here's what we got!

I pivoted 180 degrees, took 15 BABY steps back
and ended up on the 3rd step down.
*SNAP*

I SURE wish I'd dusted before I played this
little game! LOL!

Sunday Seven...

Seven things I'm thankful for this week!

1. I'm thankful for the health of my 6 immediate family members!

2. I'm thankful that all of my children are employed and in ownership of trustworthy and reliable vehicles again.

3. I'm thankful Krysti is coming home on Nov. 16th and will be here thru Thanksgiving. This is great because even though our little family will not be together FOR Thanksgiving this year, we will have an opportunity for us to all get together for a visit.

4. I'm thankful that George and Louise are going to be coming back to Maryland on Wednesday - and will be here with us for Thanksgiving too. (originally we planned to go to Pennsylvania next week - but George feels he needs to come here to get some things taken care of while he still can.) We will be making decisions during this time as to exactly when all the various changes will begin to take place, and working on sorting through a lot of legal matters that need to be taken care of too.

5. I'm thankful for family, friends, and church who support me and pray for us in all the trials and tribulations of life.

6. I was lector at church for the first time this morning, and I'm sO thankful that I made it through both looong readings with only a couple of tiny mistakes! Whoo hoo!

7. I have a part in a little Advent skit we're doing at church on Dec. 9th! I actually have 9 lines!!! It's going to be fun! I'm thankful that my church gives me sO many ways to stay active AND have fun! And by the way... I'm LOVING both my new Bible studies!!! So, I'm thankful for them too!

A New Chapter ...

Those of you who read me regularly know that this blog rarely takes a turn toward the serious side of life. There's a good reason for that. I don't like to take life too seriously! But every now and then... life gets serious. Right now, my life... and my family's lives... have just turned onto a new road. A bumpy road. And life has gotten very serious.

My husband's brother, George, has been diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis - ALS. I never knew much about this disease, but I've gotten a crash course in it recently and the bottom line is, it's still fatal. How long? We don't know. 50% make it 2-3 years. Some go 10 years... One guy has gone 20! George's ALS is progressing very quickly though, and we're not being lead to think long term. Naturally, Dennis is crushed. George is his only sibling, and life is not playing fair. As if that is not enough, George, who has never married, is also keeper of my mother-in-law ... who is in late stages of Alzheimers. George can't take care of her any longer.

So... what does this mean to us? Well... it means my husband is going to lose his only sibling. He is crushed about this. I mean CRUSHED! It also means that my MIL will be coming to live with us. Soon. Very soon. George will be coming too when he is no longer able to care for himself. George & Mom had just moved into George's brand new home in Pennsylvania over the summer. Mom's house is still here, and needs to be sold. (this is NOT a good time to be doing that!) It is now Dennis' responsibility to take care of that. George and Dennis will soon have to talk about what to do with George's place too. My guy has a lot on his plate right now.

And what does it mean to ME? Well... amazingly... God has been preparing ME for this. So I'm okay. (I may blog about that another day.) I AM sad, of course. I'm sad for George, and I'm sad for my Dennis... I'm sad for my kids... and I'm sad for me! I'm also sad because the room I wanted to make for Little Luz will now be given to Louise, and the other room that COULD have been Luz's will be reserved for George. I'm sad because my home that was finally clearing out from kids will now be filling up with adults, and my living room that was jussssst starting to LOOK like a living room again will become a clutter box again! (God really wants me to learn that this HOUSE is not important other than being walls to keep us safe! He's going to keep giving me this lesson until I get it right! Until I embrace it!) I'm also a weeeeeee little bit concerned because while I know this IS what God wants me to be doing, He has not provided me with one IOTA of training on how to care for the sick and the elderly... and certainly not the dieing. I guess the training is to come though.

Mostly, I think, I'm sad (and yea... I know these things are selfish and petty) because my relationship with Little Luz will not be allowed to be what I had dreamed it would be. Instead it will be what it WILL be. It will not be time that she and I share alone together. It will be time she and I spend shared with MIL. But I remind myself that Little Luz comes to me with NO expectations of what our relationship would be... and that it is only the relationship that was "in my head" that is going to suffer. The relationship that "will be" will be just fine! And in all God's glory, it may even be ENRICHED!!!

I do know that there are a LOT of lessons tied up in this chapter of my life. And they're not all lessons for me. There's enough to go around for each and every member of my family! We're all going to take something away from this... and if I know God like I think I know God ... they will all be lessons for the good!

Philippeans 4:13
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Friday Feast #168 ... and Aloha Friday!

Friday Feast
wanna play?

Appetizer
Which snack do you like to get when you go to the movies?

LOL! Well... okay... let's pretend that I DO go to the movies. I'm not a popcorn person so my snack would probably be either nachos or ... I forget what they're called, but those caramel balls coated in chocolate? Ya know what I mean?

Soup
What year did you start using the internet?

Wheeew... ummmm.... boy! Hard question. I think it was around 1995 or 96... Man! Doesn't seem like that long! But it has been!

Salad
What is your first name in Pig Latin?

Oh I LOVE this one!!! Cuz my name is Elli May!

Main Course

Name something you are picky about.
Oy... y'know... I USED to be picky about just about EVERYthing. But I've relaxed a lot in my "old age" and I now know that pretty much nothing is of any real importance other than God and family and friends. Soooooooo... I'm not picky about much anymore! Oh... but Daisy will tell you I'm picky about getting "virgin photos" ... and she would be right! LOL! I don't WANT the same ol' photos that everybody has taken!

Dessert

Fill in the blanks: I ____ ____ yesterday and I ____ ____ today.

I stayed home yesterday and I ran errands today.

My Question Today:

Which of your 5 senses would you miss most
if you lost it?

My Answer:
For me it would be my vision. I LIKE to see faces and
especially SMILES. I would really miss my eyes. And
with little Luz coming soon, I really want to see her!!!
(although I really want to HEAR her giggle too!) But I
also really really LIKE to drive - and I couldn't DO that

Just Monday Stuff...

FIRST things first this morning! Our beautiful Jen from ... a work in progress is in surgery first thing this morning - she is getting her 2nd Cochlear Implant today - and she's very excited about it! Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers this morning for a VERY successful surgery with NO complications. Thank you!

Soooooo... Derek had his 2nd driving lesson Sunday evening. It was waaaaaay more successful than his first driving lesson on Saturday afternoon - which I intentionally neglected to blog about! I knew he would have more success after a night to sleep on it and adjust to the idea! Amanda is in charge of teaching him to drive the manual transmission - because according to him, she "talked him into" buying it! LOL! But it's far better that SHE teach him than Dennis... it will go much more smoothly this way! Fortunately for ME, I don't know how to drive a manual MYSELF - so I'm off the hook this go round!

I decided to do the Bible study on Bible Study Methods. It wasn't a hard decision at all once I got there and talked to both instructors. Tom will be doing the evangelism study at least once a year he says -- so I went with the other one, knowing that I could catch Tom's study next time! I think this was a really good choice for me too because right from the very first day I'm learning GOOD STUFF about HOW to study the Bible in a more meaningful way for me! And that's only learning the FIRST method! There are 11 more to go! YAY! The gal that's teaching it, Ardith - is in my Wednesday night study as well, and I really like her. She is a verrrrry smart lady - a college professor/Dean of something... , and she is also a deacon at church. She's very knowledgeable - and yet very very down to earth! Another couple ( Sue & Cordell ) that I had become good friends with in my Monday night study - but who did NOT stay to do the Aslan study - have joined in this group too - so it was great to be back together with them too! And the others are all new people who I am getting to know! I LOVE that! I'm not sure I'm really READY for the evangelism study... I think maybe I NEEDED this one first! God's sO good! HE knew it all along!

Sunday Seven ...

I don't know if anybody is doing this meme anymore...
maybe just a few of us... But I use it to remind myself
at the end of each week that I have a LOT to be thankful
for.

1. I am very thankful that BOTH of my boys have obtained cars this week! Even though Derek does not yet know how to drive his... yes, it's a manual! But he's working on it... and I have FAITH that he will "get it" soon!

Derek in Honda Civic & Mathew in Mazda

2. Although I miss our Little Missy - she has such an adorable personality - she is Mathew's kitty and moved out when he moved out -- so although I do miss her - I do NOT miss her when it's time to clean the litter box! I am very thankful to be down to ONE kitty using the litter box! :)

3. I am thankful that many many MANY years ago, I had the foresight to hang on to my children's bouncy horse so that hubby could get it out of storage this weekend and clean it up! I'm sure Luz will be thankful too! When she gets here!

4. I'm thankful for Arundel Mills Mall, and the Oshkosh Outlet, and the Carter's Outlet, and Books-A-Million! And you don't really want to know HOW thankful I am for them! (I bet they are even MORE thankful for ME!)

5. I am VERY thankful that it is finally November and we can finally count down the DAYS until Luz comes to us!!!

6. I am SO thankful that all of my children, who at one time I wondered if they would EVER even LIKE each other, have grown up to absolutely LOVE each other and place family as their first priority in their lives. (well... I would prefer they would put God first... but I keep praying... maybe someday... In the meantime, I'm thankful for what I've got!)

7. I am thankful that the two Bible studies I was not crazy about have both ended, and THIS week starts two new ones for me! My Monday night group will be studying James and Jude. I'm excited about that one for sure! I haven't decided exactly which study I am starting on Sunday's yet... I have a few more hours to make up my mind. The two I'm looking at are Rick Warren's Bible Study Methods - Twelve Ways You Can Unlock God's Word ... or... Ablaze! Evangelism At Work. I really REALLY want to take the evangelism one -- but it is video based and I do NOT do well with watching television!!! I like BOTH instructors, so that's not an issue... I just have some decision making to do!

The Shower...

I wanted to post something for the Photo Hunt this morning... but other than Hubby's Harley I can't think of a thing to put up... so I'm ignoring Photo Hunt today! Instead I'm putting up a very NON-classic Shower! Amanda's "Little Girl" Shower yesterday! It all moved so quickly that I did not get pictures of everything I would have liked -- like all the "other" people who were there! LOL! But I got several cute one's of Amanda ... so I'll share them!

Apparently the office thought this was a MUCH BIGGER surprise than it was... They were VERY excited to see Amanda's "expression" when she entered the room -- and were especially anxious to see how she reacted to ME being there! I wondered how they thought they got me there if SHE didn't help them! LOL! But she did a good job of acting appropriately surprised!!!

Amanda checks out one of the table "center pieces" ...
Each table had a different grouping of toys for the center piece...
All to go home to Luz, of course!
(there were 6 or 7 tables ... I wanted to get pictures of them, but didn't)

First we had some food...

And then got down to opening ALL those presents!
Yamayra -- the gal handing her the gifts, is the one who
put this whole show together for her~

She got sO many cute clothes!

And DORA EVERYthing!

Dora comforter...

Dora lamp...

She got Dora sheets, Dora dolls, Dora games,
a little Dora carpet road map game thing, Dora books, and
yes! Dora clothes too! Dora, Dora, Dora!

AND... some creative goodies! The red thing
on her lap is a "suitcase" full of crayons! And
of course, the play-doh... she also got chalk and
paints! A good starter supply of artsy stuff!

She made a really GOOD haul!
Her employees and associates obviously CARE for
her a great deal!

After the presents, we moved back to food!
The cake, of course!
I HAVE to admit, I WAS surprised it was NOT
a DORA cake!!!
LOL!
