You're IT Freedom!

Freedom got tagged when we read an entry over at
Norma's Thursday Thirteen this week. It lead us to her cat,
Whistle's meme -- and the rest is history! Soooo... to carry on the tradition, if you are a cat or have a cat and you read this, consider your cat tagged! ;)
1. What's your favorite food? Mew! I just luff to eat! I love canned food, and dry food, and human food! I LOVE crab and shrimpies the best! Mama says I have champagne taste!
2. What is your favorite toy? Well, I am an indoor/outdoor kitty and most of my fayfurite toys are outside! I love to catch micees and chase leaves! But when I'm locked in the house I'll play with anything new that comes along!
3. What is your best trick? My best trick definately has to be pawing at the window when I want to come inside! Mommy's computer is right by the front window, and so when I see her sitting there I just jump up there and paw the window -- she let's me right in! (she is sO well trained!)
4. What is your favorite human trick?Oh my humans have lots of tricks! But the best has to be feeding on demand! When I demand, they feed!
5. What human rule do you break often? This is such a silly question, because everyone knows the humans don't make the rules. I do! But they do get a little put out when I scratch on the GOOD sofa! But that's how I get them to perform the clapping trick! If I didn't scratch they would never clap and say NO FREEDOM!
6. What do you wish your human knew about you?I wish they knew that I don't LIKE to be held and cuddled! I don't have time for such behavior as this. I have VERY important things to do outside and inside and outside and inside and outside and inside...
7. What are you glad your human does NOT know about you?I'm glad my human doesn't know that when I'm outside I like to play "jungle kitty" and sometimes I wander farther away from home than I'm supposed to! (don't tell!)

Friday Weigh - In....
Well, this morning the scale was feeling friendly. It says I'm at 255.9 - which brings it about into agreeance (is that a word?) with what the doctors scale said LAST week! LOL!
Exercise has been great this week! I'm doing really well with adding minutes at level 3 pedaling, I swam about 10 olympic sized laps on Sunday, and have increased my numbers with leg lifts -- it's really helping my belly FEEL thinner - even though it's not really "visible" yet! Soon though! Verrrrrrry soon, I think!
I'm not working today, so I'm not weighing at school. We'll catch up with the Big Losers next Friday!

Squash's Catch...

You stay right here gecko! Don't move!

I love you gecko!
Picking Up The Pace...
Exercise is moving along nicely. Just when I was starting to feel like I was never going to progress past level two, I guess I got a burst of determination and have now worked my way up to 25 minutes on level 3 followed by another 20 - 35 minutes on level 2. I must say level 3 is a MASSIVE increase. The jump from 1 to 2 was nothing - which is why I started out on level 2. But there really is a huge difference going to level 3 and my thigh muscles really feel it. (just the parts I really DON'T want to increase in size! My thigh muscles are huuuuuuuge...)
I think I'm going to join Curves when school lets out. And I'm signing up for water aerobics down at the pool this summer! Summer is going to be GOOD for me this year!!! :)
Where I'm From....
I found this poem, while visiting
Barbara ... who found it while visiting
Carol. The original poem is by George Ella Lyons, and the form (should you want to try this yourself) can be found
here. My thanks to both ladies for sharing this project! It was a fun one -- though much harder than I first thought it would be! With that said... I present MY version of
WHERE I'M FROM
I am from the percolator,
Farberware,
and fresh ground beans. (and donuts)
I am from the 3 story sardine can,
the mother-may-I front walk with the cascading steps,
and the vertical hill covered with ivy.
I am from the marigold patch, started from one seed in an eggshell,
and the Tiger Lily who's orange pedals are my hair
and who's freckles I stole for my cheeks.
I am from dining out and schnozzolas, from Carroll and Kearns and Hodges.
I am from the bellowing-blare-it-all's and the bottle-it-uppers.
From sit still and you need to exercise.
I am from mantilla's and white gloves for Sunday,
Confession is cleansing,
20 Hail Mary's,
40 Our Father's,
and don't forget the Apostle's Creed.
I'm from Washington, DC and Maryellen's Madness,
potato salad with sweet gherkins,
and spumoni ice cream.
From the 10 year old sister who hosted a carnival
to raise money for our dog's surgery,
and from the rusty swingset, cemented DEEP into the ground
so another sister couldn't topple it,
breaking her nose for the 4th time.
I am from the black steamer trunk,
tucked under the steps in the little half closet,
guarding family albums, my mother's ivory mah johng set,
war medals and report cards...
treasures from relations I never knew
and from those I knew too well.
Pizza Pizza Pizza!!!

Today we had the Pizza party after all! Krysti had a doctors appt. this morning - so I weighed myself while I was there. According to HIS scale I have lost 22 pounds, and am right on track! ( ahead of the game actually! ) So we went to Sbarro and I had not one, but TWO huuuuuuge slices of Sbarro's Mushroom pizza! Mmmmmm...mmmmm! My favorite! (with my diet soda! LOL!) But the picture is from after the party! When we went out into the mall there was a photo machine - and Amanda got it in her head that we should ALL get in this photo booth! ALL SIX of us!!! And so we did! It was hysterical! THIS would have been another great one for today's scavenger hunt!

The year? 1999!
Sometime during the "Got Milk?" campaign these mustache stickers came in the mail. Man, my hubby and kids grabbed those things right up! Amazingly, I had FILM (remember that?) in the camera! It was a silly moment to be sure!

Friday Weigh-In... Scales and Fish Tales...
... or
The Loss That Got Away! Sheeeeeeesh! I have NO IDEA how -- but I seem to have gained 2.1 pounds this week. At least according to my scale at home. I know we ate dinner out on Easter and yes, I had some good treats at that meal -- cream of crab soup and cheesey crab dip - and the fish was all fried -- but still. It was only ONE meal! I have still pedaled FIVE days this week -- and all the other days I was completely ON my diet. I don't see how I could have gained -- I would accept "not losing" -- but I really don't see how I gained! But the scale knows what the scale knows. I'm cancelling my pizza for this week!
As for the Big Losers at school... I lost 4 pounds from the last weigh-in there. But that would be the 4 pounds I lost last week plus a few days from the prior week. So that's probably about right! I've lost 9.5 pounds total with them. BUT... I found out this week that my chances of winning this are MUCH lower than I thought - because it's not who loses the most "pounds" -- it's the one who loses the greatest "percent" of body weight. Which means I would have to lose a whooooooooole lot to match the skinny's percents! LOL! It's just not my week in the weight loss world!
I'm just disgusted! Going to go pedal now!

13 Things Melli Made (or painted)
 1. I collect teddy bears. At one point my collection wasn't growing as fast as I would have liked, so I started creating my own. These are the first 4 I ever made! The yellow one was a baby gift for a friends friend. I wish I'd gotten a better picture of it - it was SO darned cute!
 2. This was just a fun little Santa! I actually made about a dozen of these and gave them as gifts one year.
 3. This was actually something we saw in a catalog -- one of those country home catalogs. It looked pretty easy to duplicate, so I did! Hubby and I have a motto... Don't BUY it if you can make it yourself!
 4. Ya know those little buildings that everybody has? I forget what they're called or who makes them - but you know what I'm talking about -- EVERYBODY has them! Well... I wanted some that nobody had! So I made my own! These are they!
 5. I love this armoire - my husband got it for me for my birthday quite a few years ago now... it was unfinished and I painted it and then stenciled the doors. I've been toying with the idea of changing it recently - so I figured I better show it now! Who knows what it will look like next!?
 6. Dennis had built me this little log cabin you see in the background here - and a little "out house" to go with it! LOL! When winter came I decided something ought to live there, and I made these snowmen -- one to represent each member of our family!
 7. One fall hubby and I got into making birdhouses. This is one of my favorites. I gave most of them away - but I've still got this one!
 8. My oldest son didn't want ANY part of Halloween Costumes when he was little -- really he never did! A mask was absolutely out of the question. But I pulled out a pillow case, and cut a hole for the head and two for the arm - and darned if he wouldn't wear that thing! So I colored it to look like a can of spaghettio's and that's how he went trick or treating! This idea came in handy again a few years later when my twins were a little iffy about things -- they went as a box of Captain Crunch and box of Pop Secret! LOL!
 9. This is a baby quilt I made for my first grandchild ... when I thought I might have one someday soon! LOL! I'm still waiting... SOMEday I'll have one! And darn if that little buggers not gonna have a quilt it's grandma made!
 10. We lived in our house for about 13 years without ANY window treatment on this window. It drove me crazy because I had NO idea what to do with this rounded window -- and it sits centered under a cathedral ceiling. I woke up one morning and knew exactly what I wanted to do with it -- and I thought I had seen the idea in one of my magazines. I went looking and never could find it in ANY of my magazines, though I looked and looked and even had the family looking! My husband finally decided that I had dreamt the idea. Maybe I did! If anyone has EVER seen this idea before, I'd love to know -- and know where you saw it!
 11. This is a table that I bought at a yard sale for $5.oo! It was brown and broken. Dennis did the repair work and I painted it. It goes perfectly in my living room which is 100% Americana!
 12. My husband and I saw a set like this Santa and Mrs. Claus at a holiday craft fair. I think they wanted $40 a piece for them! Dennis and I thought they were real cute, but knew we could replicate them at home and the minute we got home Dennis was out in the woods looking for just the right logs! I painted them and they've shared Christmas with us for about 14 years now!
 13. If you've ever read any of the Little Bear books (by Martin Waddell and Barbara Firth) to your child, you probably recognize this! In the story Let's Go Home Little Bear, Little Bear and Big Bear are tromping through the woods and Little Bear keeps hearing things. When he hears snow falling off the branches it goes plop, plop, plop. He thinks it's a Plopper! I could not resist making this door topper to go in my downstairs powder room! LOL! ( I hope Barbara Firth doesn't mind me copying her art -- hers is MUCH better - really!)

I Always Knew It ... And So Did They!
I saw this quiz over on
Ribbiticus' blog today and had to go take the test myself! I couldn't believe the results! Starbucks KNOWS me! They know me through and through! You have to know that at least 30 of my extra pounds have come from Starbucks through the years! I am now a recovering Starbucksaholic -- but I still indulge in their Shaken Iced Tea Lemonade with
HALF sweet! I get one every time I go to the grocery store! It's my reward for grocery shopping! :) Anyway... just LOOK at this!
| You Are a Frappacino |
At your best, you are: fun loving, sweet, and modern At your worst, you are: childish and over indulgent You drink coffee when: you're craving something sweet Your caffeine addiction level: low |
This is all soooo true! I am fun loving ... and sometimes sweet! And I'm waaaaay over-indulgent -- and believe I have a right to be! I rarely drink coffee at all. And my addiction is definately verrrrrry low! I don't NEED caffeine at all. Sometimes I just want the drink! How did they know???

I HAVE BEEN TAGGED!!!
Shheeeeeesh! I'VE BEEN TAGGED! And on Easter Sunday too! Thanks
Flip-Flop! You can blame her! She did it! Okay... I must name 6 weird things about myself -- and then tag 6 people that USED to be my friend until now! Or mear acquaintances. Or perfect strangers! LOL! Sooooo... I have to admit - I asked my kids for help on this one - because after all, all children think their mom is weird - right? Here's what they came up with!
1. Youngest daughter mentioned the mole on my chin. It grows whiskers. Yea... I shave it. I guess that IS kinda weird.
2. Hubby says it's weird that on this beautiful GORGEOUS day I'm sitting in the house in front of my computer! *I am getting ready to go out though... to dinner!*
3. Youngest son says I always ask random questions out of the blue and expect answers to them! (Like... "Okay guys, what's weird about me?")
4. I am allergic to being cold. (for real -- I get big red welty hives!)
5. Back in my childbearing days I always LOST weight when pregnant - and gain when I'm not! (I've always said if I could just convince my body it was pregnant ALL the time, I'd be a perfect size 8!)
6. Eldest son says it's weird that I always want to make sure he gets enough to eat. (but I don't think this is weird at all -- I think all mom's do this!)
Yep! That's me! So, now I'm tagging...
PJThe Purple GiraffeChiladyCarmenOcean LadyFrogLegsAnd... NO tag-backs!
Happy Easter!

Friday Weigh-In...

Holy schmOley! I lost a lot of weight this week! FOUR POINT FIVE POUNDS!!! 4.5! Yep! I haven't done anything different -- so it must just be all those little bits finally catching up! I'm sO excited - mainly because that put me over the 20 lb. mark -- and now I get to go have Sbarro's Pizza!!! YAY! (i'll probably gain 3 of it back!) LOL! Actually... I've decided to hold off on my treat until AFTER my next school weigh-in --- which I have no idea when it is - probably NEXT Friday! So NEXT weekend I'm treating myself to Sbarros! Oh JOY! I cannot wait! It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood....

13 Things Melli LOVES About Living in Southern Maryland
1. Calvert County is a peninsula with the Patuxent River to the west, and the Chesapeake Bay to the east. No matter where I go in the county I'm about 10 minutes from the farthest water!
2. Because of our close proximity to the bay, Maryland Blue Crabs are in abundance from July through October. Crabs are one of my very favorite foods. There are many great Crab Houses around -- or you can buy them from a guy in white truck parked on the side of the road! (these are sold live and you must cook them yourself!)
3. I live in the country. On my road are acres and acres and acres of corn fields and tobacco fields... and then little developments inbetween! MY development has a whopping 5 houses in it! And that's all there ever will be.
4. If I want to go to the city, Washington DC is only 35 minutes by car! And if I don't want to worry about parking - which I never do -- I can ride the Metro in! Of course once there, I have my choice of government, politics, art, architecture, shopping... you NAME it! I LOVE to go to DC to the museums - especially the art museums! I also love to wander the tidal basin when the cherry blossoms are in bloom and take in all the memorials. I do think it's a shame that sO many darned tourists ALSO like to come see our cherry blossoms! And I love to go to the Washington Zoo -- and visit the Panda Bears! You can't do THAT just anywhere!
5. When I'm lonely for what WE call a "real" beach -- meaning an OCEAN - as opposed to the bay, I need only drive 2.5 hours east! Ocean City Maryland is waiting for me in all it's glory 4 seasons out of the year! (and I do LOVE the ocean in winter too!)
6. About 2 hours to the north/west is Sugarloaf Mountain. When I feel the urge to take a hike or do a little rock climbing, I head in this direction. And let me tell you - Easter Sunday Sunrise Service on top of that mountain is a thing to behold! Absolutely gorgeous!
7. About another 45 minutes past Sugarloaf, is Liberty Mountain! This is where we go skiing in the winter! Now... I should clarify that if you have lived anywhere near the Rockies and skied THOSE slopes, you may be a bit disappointed with the size of Liberty's slopes. But, for us on the east coast, that have to choose between driving a few hours and being able to ski pretty much ANY time... or saving and saving for a trip to Colorado to ski the BIG BOYS - well... we LIKE Liberty! Liberty offers skiing, snowboarding, and tubing -- and it's reasonably priced!
8. My darling hubby is a model train person - and we both enjoy a good old fashioned steam engine! In Cumberland Maryland we found an old train that still runs - and even does Mystery Dinner Theatre on board! We very much enjoy riding the rails from time to time!
9. As mentioned a few posts below, I LOVE the fact that my county draws "big name" performers to come to play in teeny tiny venues, that allow us to get a MUCH closer look at the performing artist - and usually for a better price than we pay to go to the huge arenas! It's sweeeeeeeet!
10. One of our favorite camping spots is on the Potomac River, up near Harpers Ferry. Harpers Ferry is another one of those places - like Great Falls (post below) that has a Maryland side and West Virginia side. We like to go to the Maryland side where we camp out in a pop-up camper and fish in the river by actually wading out into it! It's GREAT fun! As long as your hubby doesn't get chased by a water moccasin! LOL! There is also a TON of history up in Harpers Ferry -- especially if you go across to the W.Va. side!
11. Now, heading toward the south, into the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, is one of my favorite places in the world! Luray Caverns! I have toured several different "caverns" in the US - but none are sO beautiful as Luray! And it's not just the caverns themselves that make this a worthwhile day trip -- if we go in the autumn when the leaves are changing, the drive is the most glorious thing you can imagine! It's all winding roads through the mountains, and when the leaves are in full color it is just spectacular!
12. Now... this is not something that I have actually done myself... but I do LOVE that it is available -- because my kids enjoy it! White Water Rafting on the Shenandoah River! Some of the greatest White Water Rafting in the US is right here! (this actually also takes place in Harpers Ferry - on the W.Va. side!)
13. And while I could still go on for awhile... I must stop at 13, so I think my 13th thing will be something that I actually have not YET experienced -- but PLAN to verrrrrry soon! A place in West Virginia called Berkeley Springs... or Hot Springs... I bet you can guess -- they have natural "hot springs". I definately want to go stay in a SPA and enjoy the benefits of the hot springs! Pamper me, pamper me! Life does not GET any better than this!

Great Falls...
Darling eldest and I took a field trip today. We went Great Falls. Great Falls has 2 state parks... one on the
Virginia side and one on the
Maryland side. Today we visited the Virginia side which we had not been to in eons... and we decided that the Maryland side is much better! LOL! But only because the Maryland side has the C&O Canal with boat rides up and down through the locks! The Falls themselves are a joy to behold from whichever side of the river you stand -- and are surely one of the greatest gifts God has bestowed upon residents of the tri-state region! I just wanted to share a few pictures with you!

This is a great overall picture of the falls. Not that these are the ONLY falls - but this is probably the highlight!

Amanda (darling eldest) wishing she could just go bouncing off across the river and end on the Maryland side! (she's wished she could do this in the other direction too -- for as long as I've known her!)
... Another view ...
A closer look at one of the falls.
LOL! Yours truly, enjoying the view!
This one shows the roiling waters right next to a very calm little "pool" -- do you see? Spots like that are to be found all around Great Falls. When the weather is very warm, you can always find people (my people sometimes) down swimming in these pools! This is strictly AGAINST park policy, however it is a rule that is consistantly broken. Unfortunately, on occassion the breaking of this rule has ended in drownings - especially when a person gets too close to the roiling water and gets sucked in! Canoeing and kayaking is also forbidden -- however, people put in up river where it's allowed and frequently you see them come barreling down stream! It IS however a very dangerous area and lives are lost each year. Should you ever get the chance to visit I urge you to a.) have fun and b.) BE CAREFUL!
Wordless Wednesday #5

This is a calm, quiet spot to sit and relax at
Annmarie Gardens in Solomons, Maryland. During the spring and summer they sometimes have poetry readings, art expos, and even small plays here! It's a favorite spot, quite near my home!

Talk Of Food And Such....
Should I be talking more about what I eat? I visit a lot of weight loss blogs and everyone's talking about what they eat and how much they exercised - or IF they exercised... and I just wonder if this is what I should be talking about? I'm thinking I would bore you all to death if I did this! Well... I'll try it. Today for breakfast I had a bagel (300 cal.) and 1 tablespoon of peanutbutter... split between the two halves. (95 cal.) That's plenty -- I only need to taste it! A glass of 1% milk. (about 100 cal.) WOW! That's a LOT of calories for breakfast - huh? But it's okay cuz for lunch I had a HUGE bowl of Negative Calorie soup - that cabbage stuff! Yea... I would never center a whole diet around it -- but it's not bad stuff - and very useful for days when you want to have a bagel! LOL! I also had 2 hard boiled eggs. (140 cals) Later in the day I had an apple for a snack (65 cal - but I've recently learned they too are negative calories!) and then THIS was dinner!

I'm not much into chicken so I only ate half of it. My dog ate the other half. And that squash -- Oh my goodness! I was sooooooo looking forward to this squash for dinner tonight! It's stuffed with spinach, mixed with ricotta cheese, salt, pepper and little bit of nutmeg! Doesn't that sound sO yummy? I found the recipe on-line and I just couldn't wait to have it! It was NOT yummy. It was very bland and I wished I had cooked that squash with a little butter buds and cinnamon like my friends suggested. With a side of PLAIN ol' spinach! Nope... do not try this recipe. It was a flop and a failure! I ended up only eating half the spinach -- Jewl ate the other half of that too. I did eat all the squash! I love it! And pears. Not sure exactly how many calories dinner was -- but it wasn't enough to hurt me!
As far as exercise -- I pedaled 45 minutes today. That is my norm at this point. I keep TRYING to get to 60 minutes every day - but thus far that just doesn't happen MOST of the time. I give myself extra pats on the back when I DO make it that far! Honestly I think I've only done it twice straight through. Most of the time when I reach 60 minutes for the day, it's because I do 45 early in the day - and then having a great burst of energy in late afternoon (or a sever case of guilt over having eaten something) and I will get BACK on the bike and pedal again for 20 or 30 minutes! 2 days a week I don't pedal at all. Or do calisthenics, or stretches ... or ANYthing! And I don't feel guilty about it either! I feel that doing my best 5 days a week is what doctors recommend and that's what I do!
So... now... have I bored you completely? I can't imagine coming in here and doing this every day! LOL! Please don't expect this of me.
More Than A Little Excited!
Today I managed to score tickets to two upcoming concerts in my area! First, I got tickets to see this guy!

He will be playing in a field at the St. Leonard Firehouse a few miles down the road from me on July 8th. Can't wait!
The other tickets are to see

who will be playing at the
Calvert Marine Museum on May 14! Both of these venues hold LESS than 4500 people! No matter where you sit it's up close and personal! It just amazes me that these teeny tiny venues are able to draw the big names, but they do it every year! Last year the FH had Lonestar -- and the marine museum has had Bill Cosby, The Charlie Daniels Band, Willie Nelson, and reaching waaaaaay back -- Bob Dylan!
This is going to be my first time attending one of these shows - and I am pretty darned excited about it!

Continuing The Downward Spiral...
I am working WEIGH too hard for these measely little losses! However... I continue to be happy that it IS a loss -- and honestly... I had two treats this week that were QUITE costly in the calorie and fat arena! Both heavily involved crab and cheese, in the form of a heavenly dip on Saturday, served with fresh baked bread... Mmm... and a "grilled" crab & cheese sandwich on Tuesday! Both were worth whatever excess poundage I might have lost! Stepping on the scale today I found myself down another 1.4 pounds -- and I'll take it! And be thankful for it! In my favor, I have pedalled (pedaled?)(no matter how I spell that word it always lookes wrong!) ... I have pedalled EVERY day and for 45-60 minutes each day! I've also added some lower abdominal exercise to my agenda! So, I'm feeling pretty good and satisfied with myself this week!

I won't be weighing-in with BLC today because I'm not working and don't feel like driving up there! LOL! I just weighed with them on Monday anyway. Then we are off school all week next week on Spring break - so it will be awhile before I weigh with them again.
