Additional Brain Wrinkles...
I went to a party this past weekend. Now... I'm not real BIG on parties -- especially ones where I basically know NOBODY there! And this was one of them. Derek's drum instructor was having this shin-dig, and he invited Amanda, who in turn invited (dragged) her whole family! (just kidding - we all WANTED to go!) But basically, Kenny - the drum instructor - was the only person there that ANY of us knew! LOL! But... we had a great time and I actually LEARNED some new things!

First I came away with some new vocabulary words. Pallino. Lagging. Volo. AND... I learned how to play the GAME that goes with them! BOCCE!
I've heard of Bocce before... and I may have even passed by a game or two on the elipse down in DC... but I never knew how the game was really played. It's FUN! It's like a combination of bowling, curling, billiards, shuffleboard! LOL! Now, we played a very "relaxed" version ... as a matter of fact, when we started nobody even knew the rules of the game! Then one fella happend to have his blueberry on him and he went on-line and found us the rules! But rules vary... and ours really varied! Well... for starters the game is "competitively" played on a "court" 60-85 feet long and 12 feet wide. I'm guessing that OUR court was maximum 40 feet long - probably not even! And 15-20 feet wide. And shaped like a trapezoid! LOL! But the important thing is that we had FUN! The women won all 3 games! (after 3 it got too dark to see!) And now I am thoroughly HOOKED on Bocce!
You know... we can't seem to get grass to grow in our front yard for anything! Maybe... just maybe... that would be a GREAT place to put a Bocce court! Now... all I have to decide is ... do I want a 4 colors set or just 2? And do I want resin or wood? Or maybe the shiney metal ones? Oh the decisions!

And then I'll be off to California to become a
Bocce Bum!
Counting Blessings...
After posting the picture of my son and his girl yesterday for the photo hunt, several people mentioned to me how lucky I am - and one even wondered if I realized how lucky I am! Because I AM actually pulling for my son to marry this girl... I LOVE her to pieces! They have been "dating" since they were in 11th grade, a little more than 3 years now, I guess. From day one she came into my house and "became" a part of my family. She just FIT. She still "fits". This is very important to me, but more than that, it's important to my boy. Whoever he dates MUST fit with the family. He and Tyf have broken up a couple of times. They never STAY broken up for more than about 6 weeks before they re-decide they just can't live without each other. I am positive they are right for each other -- I think within the next few years THEY will figure it out too! (the last break-up broke MY heart ... but I knew they'd get back together!) Yes... I'm blessed!
My daughter Amanda is "in a relationship" that is very similar. Her hubby/ex-hubby/significant other is also verrrrry important to our family! They've been together/apart for (I've lost count) 7 or 8 years I think! They've been married, divorced, lived together, lived apart, lived together, and now she's home and he's in Colorado and they're still "dating"! LOL! I admit, they have had some rather "serious" issues in their lives that they have had to come to terms with, but the fact remains that though they don't do so well at living WITH each other sometimes, they definately can NOT live without each other! WE love Hector and have always been very happy when he's IN our lives, and sad when he's OUT. Of course, in or out has to be Amanda's decision - but again, it is important to her that we ALL love him and that he "fits". The plan right now is that Hector will be moving east in the next 12 months, and they will see if living together is more successful for them on East Coast! ( I'm hoping! ) And yes... I'm blessed!
Then there is Krysti, who has JUST discovered young love! She is currently in her very first relationship and it just amazes me that she, too, has chosen someone that walked in our front door and "fit". Ricky is a dollbaby, and gets along with all members of the family! He doesn't eat seafood, but we've worked around THAT! LOL! Yes... I'm blessed!
Derek is still waiting for the right someone special to come into his life. But I will BET you - and I would put quite a bit of money on this - that when he finds her, she will "fit"! I am very very fortunate that all of my kids - whether consiously or subconsiously - have made this a priority in their "mates". I am VERY blessed!
I came from a large family - I was the youngest of seven - and I remember how much fun the gatherings were when we ALL got together. This doesn't happen ... ever... anymore. But now I can't wait until the time when all of my kids have spouses and kids and we ALL get together ... Oh gooooood times! Yep! I AM BLESSED!!!

Just Bein' a Kid...
At 19.5 years of age, my eldest son is by far more "man" than "child". So it's not very often that I have the opportunity to catch him in the act of "bein' a kid" ... but last night I did!

After I snapped this photo I grabbed the swing next to him and "be'd a kid" too!
Wah! Wah! Wah!
Some of this with that?

Curves Update!
Today I gave in and "joined" Curves - the membership package and all that -- and I got weighed and measured again! It was GREAT news ... though I'm not sure how to take the "scale" part of it! (as usual... scales are always an issue...) The Curves scale says I have lost 10 pounds in the past 4 weeks -- and we know that LAST week 3 doctors scales agreed that I had lost nothing! But when I left Curves today I went and checked my doctors scale AGAIN... and it now says I have lost (not 10) 4 pounds! (for a total 0f 37!!! YAY!) So... we'll leave it at that. Sticking with the doc's scale! However, the doctor doesn't measure me -- so we go with Curves measurements -- and they are lookin' good too! Here's what I've done this month!
LOST INCHES
Breast - 1.25
Waist - 1.5
Abdomen - 1.25
Hips - 1.25
Thighs - 1.0
Upper Arm - 0.0That's a total of 6.25 inches! (not sure what happend with the arms...) And I lost a bit off my BMI too! (and whatever that other measurement is they take ... I forget!) Sooo... it does appear that Curves is working for me! Along with the bike and gazelle! And I'm enjoying it -- AND... BEST of all ... they don't bug me anymore about their silly little games and stuff! They just let me be and do my thing! Which is why I went ahead and joined! I love it!
My New Favorite Animal...

Yep... the gazelle! What can I say? Ever since Tyfany left her gazelle with me, I've been using it! And LOVING it! Let me tell you something. I have really REALLY bad feet ... and bad knees... and bad hips, shoulders ... what the heck - JOINTS! I have arthritis in almost all of them -- and additional complications in my feet and knees. But this little piece of exercise equipment is sooooo awesome! It let's me WALK - which I can't even do on the street or a treadmill -- but not only that - it let's me RUN!!!! Now mind you, stamina is a problem. So far I am only up to 16 minutes at a shot on the gazelle -- but that is 16 more minutes than I have spent at a very brisk walk in a long loooooong time! And I actually RUN for 5 of those minutes! AND I have "played" on the gazelle 3 times yesterday and twice so far today!

You can NOT imagine how this feels to me! I have wanted to be able to run for sO long! Just to be ABLE to do it! And on this piece of equipment, I can! I can't say enough good things about this... it is just awesome! I can't wait until it makes me look like HER! LOL!
July Contest Entry
This is my entry for TNC's July Photo Contest. :)

Click on photo to see larger image. This is the flag in my yard, a firetruck we saw in Bowie while shopping, a firework I set off this evening up on our cul de sac -- probably woke half the neighbors - I didn't know it was going to make noise! LOL! And the Seahorse is our answer to those crazy cows! Two years ago each school in our county was given one of them to paint. This one was done by the kids at the school where I work, and it later sat in front of my favorite library ... until it was auctioned off on Ebay! (I thought we should keep them in the county -- but the auction was to raise money for our school's art departments. A good cause - but I miss the seahorses!)
The Geek Squad
My kids computer has gotten incredibly slow... imagine one computer with 3 teenagers and 1 adults worth of music downloaded on to it! So I order some new memory from Best Buy On Line. And being the idiot that I am I didn't realize that memory comes in different shapes and sizes. The one that I got wouldn't "fit" in our computer... and so the Saga begins.

I decided to make "short" work of it by returning the wrong memory directly to my local Best Buy. Well, the first stop they tell me (to exchange it) would be the Geek Squad. Tell them my computer model and they will look up on the internet and find which memory I DO need. So I give them my info and they look, and they can't find my computer. "How old is it?" they as me. 2 years old, I say. "Well, it's too old - we can't find it." Huh??? I know computers become dinosaurs really fast - but this is ridiculous! I even SAY to them ... "You mean you (your store) sold me a computer
2 years ago and today I can't buy memory for it???" He just shrugged at me. "I can't find it", he said.
I decided to just return the memory and talk to my "computer guy" later. But upon returning home, Krysti's new love, Ricky heard the story and he googled my computer. It's a HP Pavillion A656X in case you'd like to try. It popped right up and showed which memory I needed! We ordered it on line within 3 minutes! It will be here in two days. So much for the GEEKS! (Gimme a break...)

This little guy is almost 17 years old now, and the only "sport" he's interested in anymore is skateboarding! But hubby and I spent many an hour watching the kids knock some balls around when they were younger... tballs, baseballs, soccer balls... you name it! (even bowling balls!)

New Toy?... Maybe!

Check THIS out! It's called the Gazelle! Sells at Kmart for $99! Tyfany brought it over to our house last night for me to try out -- the whole family ended up getting into it! LOL! I can only make it go a little -- but Amanda really had it rockin' and rollin'! And you should just SEE Tyfany on it! Whew! She SMOKES! Tyf had told me about it about a month ago and I had asked Amanda if I could get one -- she said NO - I'd kill myself on it and it wouldn't be good for my knees and feet! But after she tried it out, she found that it doesn't stress knees and feet AT ALL - and she said I could get one if I want! I think I DO want! This little machine is FUN as well as good exercise! It's the only thing Tyfany uses and she has slimmed down a LOT in just six weeks! I'm gonna think about it ... until I save a hundred bucks! Then I'll have it! LOL!
Oh yea... did I mention Mathew and Tyfany are back together now? They are! YAY!
**UPDATE** Woot! Woot! Tyfany is gonna LEAVE the gazelle at MY house! She says she'll come over HERE to get her turns on it and we can all benefit from it! YAY! I love my bike - but it IS nice to mix things up from time to time! Keeps boredom away.... yep!
What The ....???
Ohhhhhhh I am NOT a happy Melli right now! No no no no no... definately NOT a happy Melli! I have not weighed myself for almost 3 weeks. And the last time I DID weigh myself it was on my doctor's scale - cuz his is the only one I USE anymore! AND 3 weeks ago I joined CURVES. So I was pretty sure that between pedaling for 60 minutes a day, and doing the Curves workout at least 4 times a week, that when I went to the doctor today I would be down another 6 or 7 pounds! Well guess what?
I HAVE NOT LOST ONE FREAKIN' OUNCE IN THE PAST 3 WEEKS!!!I wanted to cry ... but I didn't! Instead I ranted and raved, and the nurse took me into another room and put me on a different scale! It said the SAME thing! So then I yelled at the doctor who thought I was bananas because the last time HE saw me I was 33 pounds heavier! He thought I should be
happy with my 33 pound loss. And I told him I was... 3 weeks ago! NOW I want to be down 40!
He seems to think that having joined Curves has probably built some muscles... which he promises weigh considerably more than fat! (but NOT 6-8 pounds more!) But he also thinks that I had probably hit a plateau... and that (lucky me) coincidentally also chose to join Curves and build some muscle at that time... this whole thing SUCKS!
Nope. I am NOT a happy Melli today! And NOBODY is going to MAKE me be happy!
(of course, I'm also not as lunatic as my darling daughter who thinks he is CRAZY and should have run some tests! Amanda ALWAYS thinks that doctors should run some tests! And she always thinks there is something DREADFULLY wrong and that I'm probably on death's door! I assure you I'm not. But I'm not happy either!) GRRRRRR!
21 Things....
I found this meme over at
The Fernandeses and I'm a sucker for these things so here we go!
1. Grab the book nearest to you, turn to page 18, find line 4. Write down what it says:"I remember," I said. My voice sounded small and faraway to me, like it was coming from an ant hole in the ground.
(taken from The Secret Life of Bees, by Sue Monk Kidd)
2. Stretch your left arm out as far as you can. What do you touch first? The Fireplace.
3. What is the last thing you watched on TV?The weather.
4. WITHOUT LOOKING, guess what time it is:9:30 am
5. Now look at the clock, what is the actual time?9:44 am
6. With the exception of the computer, what can you hear?A plane outside, the toilet flushing, the airconditioner running.
7. When did you last step outside? what were you doing? This morning. Watering the plants on the front porch.
8. Before you came to this website, what did you look at?Someone else's Wordless Wednesday - but now I don't remember which!
9. What are you wearing? My pajamas.
10. Did you dream last night?I don't remember one... but they say you do EVERY night.
11. When did you last laugh?Last night. We were out to dinner and playing trivia and my kids had me cracking up!
12. What is on the walls of the room you are in?Navy blue paint, 10 pictures, a mirror, a shadow box, 2 plates.
13. Seen anything weird lately?Yes! A bug - it looked like a HUMONGOUS ant - but it was fluorescent blue and fuzzy! It was in my yard - and I hope it's not poisonous!
14. What do you think of this quiz?I'm a littly freaky ... I like these things! And this is actually one of the BETTER meme's I've come across!
15. What is the last film you saw?March of the Penguins
16. If you became a multi-millionaire overnight, what would you buy first?Waterfront property.
17. Tell me something about you that I don’t know:Well... it's not really about me - but I think it's neat that YOUR name is Amanda Fernandes, and my daughter's name is Amanda - and she married into the name Hernandez -- so SHE is Amanda Hernandez! :)
18. If you could change one thing about the world, regardless of guilt or politics, what would you do?Oh boy... to change only ONE thing in a world that needs so much? I think the immediate thing that I would do would be to replace the current Presidential Administration here in the US. That alone could solve sO many problems!
19. Do you like to dance?I LOOOOVE to dance!
20. Imagine your first child is a girl, what do you call her? a boy?Well, I have 4 children. My first was a girl and I called her Amanda. My first boy was called Mathew. IF by SOME miraculous chance I were to have another girl, (and I didn't have to argue with my hubbie over names) I would call her Breeze. A new boy I would call Jericho.
21. Would you ever consider living abroad?Absolutely! I would like to try living in several different places for at least a year at a time!

A Day At The Zoo...
Today God gave me a wonderful gift! It's June in Washington -- and it was about 70 degrees out today! THAT is a HUGE gift! I took it and thanked God profusely! I was not about to spend THIS day indoors! So I grabbed my purse and my hot pink hat, and I headed for the zoo! Lots of other people had the same idea as me, but most of them didn't seem to have time to "wait around" and see what other gifts God had to offer! But I did. (if you want to see them bigger just click on each image)
First was a glimps at one of the Giant Pandas. This is the mama - Mei Xiang.

This wasn't a very good glimps... what with all that caging in the way! But I've been to the zoo MANY MANY times when I didn't get to see even THIS much of the Giant Pandas! So I took what I could get! But... God had so much more in mind today! Just look at these...
I ran around to the bottom of the exhibit... and darned if that little lady didn't follow! She let me get this great shot of her! BUT... that wasn't the best! I was really hoping to see the new BABY Panda that was born last July! And guess what? I found him!
UP A TREE!!!
Can you BELIEVE it? I couldn't!
(see? God had GREAT fun planned for me!)
So that's little Tai Shan ... who has apparently been climing trees for a few months now! Toooooo cute! From the Pandas I moved on to the giraffes... they are right across the path, so it made sense... There was only ONE outside today, but he was a pretty one and if one was willing to wait long enough he was willing to accomodate us! When I first got to his area, he was back hidden behind some fencing having a little snack. But I waited, and eventually he did come out.

He says "Let me just strrrrreeeeeetch and show you how tall I CAN be!" Isn't he pretty?
And right around the corner from there I found this little fella!

This is the baby elephant. I don't know where mom and pops were today - but they sure weren't out minding the little guy! Just moments after I snapped this he turned hiney end toward the crowd and showed how elephants poop! I was giggling over some of the little kids reactions to that! It was funny!
I didn't want to go inside any of the buildings today ... but NONE of the monkeys were outside. So I went in the ape house, only to be very disappointed. There are about 12 enclosures for monkeys in there -- and I HATE seeing animals kept in those enclosures anyway... I really HATE it -- but I found that only 2 of them DID have animals in them. Now if none were outside, and only two were inside... then where the heck are all the monkeys? And of course, since there were only two the crowds around them were CRAZY - and pushy! I wasn't being bothered with this on my BEAUTIFUL day! So... sorry... no monkeys! ( I know... I was disappointed too ... so I know just how you feel! )
But look here! I found a tiger out in his play yard. He wasn't terribly playful... just kinda lounging around, Lording over his domain... typical cat!
I'll tell ya though ... a lot of people would be so sad if they new that just MOMENTS after they all took off, the caretaker called him inside. And while HE was inside, SHE came out and hid a lamb shank in his yard! Then she let him back out. Boy was I glad I had just hung out there with that ol' tiger!

Here, he smelled the food, but he hadn't found it yet. He was "hunting"!

And of course, he DID find it, and was greatly enjoying it!

But I won't BORE you with all 47 pictures I took of him! We'll stop at 4! You can thank me later!

This little (ha!) lady is the tiger's next door neighbor. When I was done with him I went to check on her. The nice lady who had just given HIM his lamb shank, had given HER a burlap bag filled with straw! (is this fair?) Well, apparently this is the lion's version of catnip! She LIKED this bag of straw! When she first got it she grabbed it and ran back behind some bushes and hid. I tried nicely to explain to her that it was no fun for US if she stayed in the bushes. She was amazing level headed about this and brought her little sack back out to show us! I took about a million (maybe less) pictures of her too -- but for some reason they are ALL blurry! Must have something to do with a Lioness on Catnip! This one was the best of the bunch! It will have to do!
That was all of the big major animals I saw today. But I also saw a few little critters that I wanted to share...

This is called a "Red Panda" ... but really, I think it looks more like a little foxxy furball! He too had just recently been left with these little slices of apple and he seemed pretty happy about it!

And then there's these little beavers. They really weren't too "busy" today - I think they get Sundays off! They were just playing around in the pool mostly! But they were awfully cute, and I thought they deserved a few more leaves to nibble on seeing as how they kept me pretty well entertained for about half an hour!

And last... I took a self portrait -- cuz I knOw you wondering about my hot pink hat! I actually have one of these in just about every color and my kids tease me unmercifully about them! But I LIKE them... and I don't care if I AM a redhead ... I'll wear hot pink if I want to! I hope you enjoyed our trip to the zoo today! I know I did!

This photo was actually taken on the cul-de-sac where I live. I chose it because it is our local fire department and our State Police working together to save a life. I feel this displays "community" at it's best! The victim was not someone from our cul-de-sac -- but the helicopters often land here and then the rescue squad brings the victim to the helicopter.

It's a Brave New... Garden...

So, here it is. Back in order. With new fencing surrounding it. It
will stay this time. At 5 years old Jewl does understand the meaning of fences. She's lived with them all her life.... It's just the dopey mama that forgets the
need for such things.
The Aid to My Black Thumb...
Last weekend I spent the weekend planting gardens... something that I almost never do! I am known - probably WORLD WIDE - for my black thumb! I'm sure you've heard of me! But despite the thumb, I do like a nice garden, so plant I did. And then... what happens? I come home and my oldest boy says "Mom... I've got some really bad news" -- scared the CRAP outta me is what HE did! And then he shows me...

So now I'm going shopping. For MORE marigolds. And mOre salvia. I can't believe she didn't leave ONE! Oh yea... I'm buying some fence too!
Is This Weird???
Okay... so I've been going to Curves for almost two weeks now, and I still absolutely LOVE the workout, but I'm starting to think I might not be "cut out" for the "whole" Curves experience. But I'm wondering... is it just MY Curves? Or are ALL Curves like this? So I'd really like some comments from those of you that have EVER experienced Curves.
They didn't hit me with the "big picture" all at once. Things sorta started creeping in after about my 3rd visit. First the Jewelry Lady arrived. She set up her little stand and started selling jewelry - right there in the Gym. I just sort of ignored her and went on my merry way. Next I learned that MY Curves holds Bible Studies during the noon hour when they are "closed" for exercise -- well, really it's 1:30 to 3:00 each afternoon that they're closed -- and the Bible Study is only one or two days a week, but they would LOVE it if I could fit it in! And they offer massage services... 3 different types. (I'm starting to think this is one stop shopping ... I can take care of my health, and spititual needs - and look GOOD while I'm doing it!) But does this happen at ALL Curves? Now, I missed yesterday cuz I was home waiting for the Dryer Man to come fix said appliance -- so today was my first day of June. I was handed a calendar when I walked in the door and told that today was "Unscramble The Word" day. Tomorrow is Mismatched Socks day. There's a Crazy Hat day and Wear Your Bathing Suit day.... and there is something like this for every single bloomin' day of the month! Wear HOT PINK Lipstick Day? To the GYM??? I'm a REDHEAD!!!
Okay... really... all I want to know is IS THIS NORMAL FOR ALL CURVES? Or have I just been so lucky as to be blessed by the Lame Curves Owner Fairy? All I want to do is go in wearing normal shorts and a tee (or tank) and exercise. That's all. I don't want to talk. I don't want to DANCE. I don't want to play trivia! (that's what Tuesday nights are for!) I just want to exercise! When I went in on Wednesday I was told it was "Whacky Wednesday" and we had to go in backwards order. I couldn't IGNORE that ... it would mess everyone ELSE up! LOL! Ohhhh what to do? What to do? I really LIKE the workout... but good golly it feels like a tupperware party EVERY day in there! OY!
