My Twins... I Guess We'll KEEP Them!

Happy Birthday
Krysti & Derek!!!

September 12, 1989
(20 years ago today...)
Krysti... Me... Derek...

That was the day that was! Goodness! Let me tell you... carrying twins is not an easy task. From the very minute they found out I was carrying twins (which was not too many minutes after the found out I was pregnant) I heard the term "at risk"... a LOT! Let me tell you first that I just absolutely LOVE being pregnant! Truly. My body naturally LOSES weight when I'm pregnant - which has caused more than one doctor to accuse me of being bulimic... (not quite!) ... and I crave healthy food, and I just FEEL good! Yes. Well, after the first horrendous months of morning sickness. LOL! But the last 6 months of pregnancy has always been gOOd for me! Until I became "at risk". Ugh! They figured since I was carrying two babies I must need twice as many prenatal visits! I'm not really a "doctor" person. If I feel good I don't think I really NEED to be seen. Mrs. Lantz, you are "at risk" - you NEED to be seen! So I was seen. And seen and seen. Then... in my 3rd trimester, I started having contractions. Oh good grief! I was instantly put on "bed rest", hooked up to a monitor, and fed water by the gallon jugs! I had a 2.5 year old running around and I wasn't allowed off the couch! For 3 months. Fortunately I had a 13 year old who gave up her entire summer vacation to help Mom keep those twins in the tummy! That was quite a thing for a 13 year old!

So... after being on bed rest for 3 months - oh and on "medication" which turns out was steroids - which make a body quiiiiiiite energetic - but not allowed to get up and work off some of that energy, mind you -- but anyway - after 3 months of that Labor Day weekend arrives, and the doctor says it is now "safe"... he takes me off the medication, says I can get off the couch, and we figure we are going to have BABIES within 24 hours! Right? No. That was like Sept. 1st or 2nd. We went to bed EVERY night positive we were going to the hospital in the middle of the night! But we weren't. So... on the night of September 11th, when I couldn't sleep, I didn't think anything of it. I tossed and I turned and I tossed and I turned. And finally I got up to go downstairs and get a snack and (ohhhhh BAD Mommy) a cigarette. (yea... I smoked through this one... I sorta quit for the first 3 months - but after that... I was bad!) I walked around the house a little and then I went back to bed. My back was hurting though and I just could NOT get comfortable so I got up again, went back down stairs. My back didn't hurt while I was sitting at the kitchen table... but suddenly I realized I was having more contractions than usual. I started timing them and they were about 3 minutes apart. Hm. Well... I wasn't concerned because my first two pregnancies when the contractions were 3 minutes apart I still had at least 12 hours before babies were born! So I went upstairs and I woke Dennis. I told him what was going on, and I said I was going to take a shower and then call the doctor. I asked if he wanted to take a shower after. He said no. So when I got out of the shower I called the doctor and he said he would meet me at the hospital. I said, no... go on back to sleep... it's still going to be awhile... I'll have the hospital call you when it gets closer. So HE DID! Dennis and I left for the hospital and we no sooner got in my room, I was in my "gown" and sittin' in the bed signing papers, and I looked at the nurse and said... I feel like I need to push. I was in NO pain! I had not HAD a HARD contraction yet. She said well, let me examine you real quick... maybe you just need to use the bathroom. She examined me and said "OH MY! You are CROWNING! Where is your DOCTOR?" ... sleeping. They called Dr. G and told me to PANT! Dr. G. lived in Washington, DC... about 40 minutes away! The papers that I had been signing were to get an epidural so that they would not have to knock me out if a ceasarean became necessary... but it was too late to DO one! (an epidural... not a c-section!) Not only that but this was a *high risk* delivery - we needed another O.B., my pediatrician, another pediatrician, and about 8 nurses! I think I was not the ONLY one PANTING as they tried to ready a delivery room and gather the key players for this big event! And all I could think was there is noooooo way Dr. G is gettin' here in time for Baby A to make his appearance! (according to the sonogram, Baby A was a boy... Baby B was a girl -- remember that!) Because I was huff'n and puff'n to blow down a house and Baby A was NOT retreating! I said Nurse? What if Dr. G doesn't get here? *grin* She said "then I guess I'M going to deliver a baby ... or two! Okaaaay! I just wanted to know that SOMEbody had this under control! LOL! As it turned out I panted long enough, Dr. G drove fast enough and they wheeled me into delivery just in time to discover that this delivery room did NOT have a break-away table! At this point I was instructed to KEEP PANTIN' MARY! You gotta be kiddin' me... They changed out the table right from under me, and Dr. G entered the arena jusssssst in time to catch KRYSTI (Baby A - but NOT a boy) entering the world! She came into the world with her eyes wiiiiiiide open and cussin' her twin out! Ohhhhh Dennis was a PROUD papa! I admit I was a little disappointed because I really did want at least one more boy. It was going to be perfect with 2 boys and 2 girls. But oh well! Three girls would be fine! Well, then Baby B got stuck! Dr. G and Dr. N worked for several minutes to try to turn her... but she was a stubborn one and would not budge! She was hung up sideways and I won't go into details but it wasn't pretty! I'm continuing to have contractions -- and they have me panting again because they don't want me to PUSH while she's sideways! They want to make sure she comes out HEAD first - not feet first! Well, she wasn't coming out anything but side first! The decision was made that a c-section WAS in order! And DANG IT I didn't have an epidural! Well, ya know... once doctors make a decision, there is no discussion. Before I had time to think OR speak Dennis was being shuffled out of the room and I was being told good night Mary... when you wake up you'll have 2 babies! OUT! Like a light! I woke up fully believing I had 2 baby daughters... but when I was finally awake enough to understand and remember, I found out that Baby B was a BOY! So... before you start thinking that they just switched places or something - NO! That is not the case! They label them by their placentas and each baby is connected TO that placenta - so the truth of the matter is that the people who read my sonogram read BOTH babies wrong! That would never happen these 20 years later because sonography has gotten so much clearer that it's almost like getting JC Penney photographs of your in utero baby! But 20 years ago... some parts were sketchy! And both my babies were mis-read! Dennis and I were pleased as punch! Krysti has never forgiven SOMEbody! She has always thought she shoulda had a twin SISTER ... and we guess that's why she was so vocal coming into the world! Derek came much more quietly. They had to smack him around a bit to get a squall out of him ... and then he went right back to sleep! He was pretty sure he was not done cookin' ... and he greatly resented being dragged into the world by his twin! Not to worry... eventually they BOTH got over it! I think NEXT year they might actually be friends!

4 years old...

Around 6... Twins just seem to do things "together".

They really get along a lot better than they pretend!

Soooo.... Krysti called me out this year on the fact that I have had NEVER done a birthday post to her! Apparently I have done one for her older sister... and I have done one for her older brother... but I had NOT done one for her - or her twin! But see, when she searched my blog, she only searched birthdays - and so she missed the post that wasn't devoted to anyone's birthday in which I bragged upon all of them ... HERE. So, if the braggin' was what she wanted she can go read THAT post! (and so can you...)

Mr. 22 ...

Mathew & Luz in Ocean City last summer.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY BOY!!!

My Mathew has a birthday today. Twenty two years ago today - well... 22 years ago YESTERDAY, I went to the hospital (after having been truly "in labor" for a week already) to be induced. Amanda waited as impatiently as a child could at home with our next door neighbors. Dennis and I arrived around 8:30 a.m. - they were going to start inducing promptly at 9:00! We expected to have a baby before supper! I should have known better. LOL! I had been to the doctors office every day for the past week - with real live contractions. I had been monitored and released each and every day. I had been to the hospital and sent home... everytime, the contractions would stop. It was crazy! As soon as I would get home, the contractions would start again! But they never got worse, and they never got closer... and soooo after a week I was HAPPY to be induced! Until it happened! Pitocin is evil. Did anyone ever you tell you that? I don't know if they've come up with a kinder gentler form of inducement (induction?) in recent years... but 22 years ago, Pitocin was the drug of choice, and it made a HARD labor. OR it could have been my stubborn son! But it was probably a cominbation of the two! At any rate, they did indeed start the Pit Drip at 9:00 ... and 13 hours later when I absolutely could not bear another MOMENT of it, I finally conceded to an epidurmal! Good thing I did - because he still wasn't ready! The whole thing is really still a bit of a blur to me -- but at sOMe point during the evening, I won the debate as to whether his middle name would be David or Jordan. Due to the agonizing pain of this particular labor I ended up vomiting. (what, I don't know because I had had NOTHING to eat...) At that point, Dennis looked at me and said "if it's a boy he can be Jordan!" ... And so it was! I'd EARNED it! I was still earning it! He did not finally arrive in the world until 1:51 am on Sunday! SUPER BOWL Sunday! Denver beat the Giants! (these are the things mother's remember...) Anyway... we counted his fingers and we counted his toes, and we proclaimed him Perfect. hehehehe.... He IS perfect! God doesn't make mistakes. Dennis went home to grab a few hours of sleep, and Amanda. What he didn't count on was that while we had been having all this fun, it has SNOWED outside! And it wasn't just a little dusting! It was about 8-10 inches worth! Dennis made it home, but had to shovel his way IN to our driveway. He went in, celebrated her new brother with Amanda, got some sleep, and woke up to find that ANOTHER huge storm had deposited another 6-8 inches and he had to shovel out again in order to bring her to the hospital! I was totally oblivious to all this. I was sitting cozy in a warm hospital bed with a darling perfect Mathew (with ONE "t") Jordan on my lap! All I knew was life was good! MY part of the work was over! Or so I thought.

Mathew Jordan was/is/and will always be an awesome baby/boy/man. He is/was/and always will be ALSO a handful! Mathew has always viewed life from the Happy side! When Mathew smiles, his whole face smiles! He has eyes that become half moons when he smiles and it just makes YOU smile too! When he was 3 and 4 and 5 he wanted to be a super-hero! Back then it had more to do with red boots and a long cape. He still wants to be a super-hero! But now it has more to do with wanting the world to be perfect. At least HIS part of it! Mathew does not accept the world as it is "just because"... and that is a good thing. He questions EVERYTHING. And that is a good thing. He is verrrrrry slow to conform to socieity's standards... and that can be good... it can also make life hard. Mathew's life is often hard. BUT... Mathew is a ponderer. I can remember when he was 12 or 13, Pinky & The Brain was a popular children's cartoon. Mathew LOVED Pinky & the Brain! And his favorite line was when Brain would say "Pinky, are you pondering what I'm pondering?"... and of course, Pinky would reply... "I think so, Brain ... but... [insert something obscure!]" Mathew loves to ponder. Pondering is a very good thing! Lots of learning goes on during a good ponder! Mathew is doing a lot of pondering these days. On his 21st birthday he was on a major Peak in his life. He had a job that he loved, a woman he loved, a nice apartment in an upscale high-rise, a fairly new car -- things were jusssssst goin' good! On his 22nd birthday he is in a valley. The job fell with the declining dollar (he was in furniture sales), he and the woman split (but have reunited), he is now living with his sister to share rent and ease everyone's financial burdens, he would like "less" car with a lower payment. I'm watching Mathew turn 22, and I'm impressed. When I was 22 I was in a deep DEEP valley myself. That was actually probably THE lowest time in my existence on this planet! But I had "the stuff" that wreaks survivor... And Mathew does too! And by 23 I was well on my way back UP the mountain! And I bet that by January 25th, 2010, Mathew will be climbing back up the mountain too! I know he will! He's got the right STUFF!

A New Meme! ... Open Doors... and Friday stuff...

My friend Barbara H. over at Stray Thoughts THOUGHT up this meme and started it all on her little own! It's relevant to us all, so of course I am playing! (and I would even if it had no relevance at all...)

How do you feel about being tagged for memes?
I don't mind being tagged a bit! As a matter of fact, I LOVE doing memes! Problem is I've DONE most of them, so they're hard to find different ones anymore! Some that I haven't done for a long long time I've repeated. My readership is somewhat different now than it was... so I figure it's okay!

Do you participate in any regular weekly memes? Which ones?
Oy! I have a meme for almost every day of the week. I'm trying to cut back on some... but sometimes when you DON'T have anything on your brain, they help to give ya something! Lately though, I'm really IN to these photo challenges! They are enriching my life on many different levels, and I think I'll probably stick with them! I LIKE the memes that ask weekly questions - except that soooooo many times the questions revolve around television or movies or the entertainment industry. That just doesn't work for me.

Have you found any bloggers that you began to read regularly after participating in a meme with them?
Funny you should ask... MOST of my blogging friends I have met through one meme or another. And many I really don't remember which meme they came from. I know I met Lazy Daisy and Barbara Miers through the Blog Olympics! That was just a blast! But Daisy was also doing Thursday Thirteen at that time - and so was I. I met Flip Flop Floozie, and LadyBugCrossing through Lazy Daisy. The one I DON'T remember how I met is Quilly... cuz she never did memes. Quilly? Do YOU remember? Maybe you found me!

Do you know of any readers who found you through a meme and became regular readers?
All of the above mentioned... plus I think Jane, probably through TT, or WW. Maybe it was Friday Feast... Dang! It all runs together now!

Did you find any favorite blogs through comments or blogrolls on others’ blogs?
Well, see... here's the thing. It's all sort of a process to becoming a regular reader and then a "friend". First you start in a meme... and you like a person's style, and then you read the comments that they leave in other blogs - and in your own too, of course - and they grow on you. So then you start lingering on their blog past the meme and you see what they had to say during the week, and you may leave a comment or two or five... and before you know it you're reading them everyday or at least every OTHER day just to keep up ... and before you know it they FEEL like a friend even if they don't know it!!! Next thing you know you're having lunch with them somewhere while your husband worries that you or them might be an axe murderer and if things REALLY go well, you invite yourself back to spend the night at their house! (did I just skirt this question?)

Did you find any favorite blogs from someone else’s recommendation?
Absolutely positively - but I'm DUMB! Quilly told me about Dr. John aaaaages ago... Melli, read him... I think you'll like him. So I stopped in and I read him and I totally didn't GET him. And I left and didn't think much of it again... until he joined a photo hunt. And then I was visiting him everyday to see his pictures and I was learning about his family, and I started reading about that make believe village in his basement and before I knew it I was just absolutely HOOKED on Dr. John!!!

If you comment on someone’s blog, do you expect a response? If so, do you prefer that response to come through an e-mail, a comment from them on the same post, or a comment on your blog?
Honestly I really don't expect a response from most people. I don't leave my real email addy in the comment forms - I learned long ago that to keep spam to a minimum do NOT put your addy in those things! And I get almost zero spam! Sooooo... unless they are regulars who HAVE an email for me... or they are willing to follow me back to my page and hunt down my email addy, they won't get through to me. I tried doing that comment to the comments thing ... and I gotta tell ya that's just a nuisance! I LOVE that Quilly does it - and a few others - and I go back to see what they said! But most people don't come back and never see your response. So then what? Lately what I've been doing - since I have started doing just a little blabber about nothing every day, is if there was a question from a regular the day before I might say something about it. Sometimes I go back to their blog and answer the question... it really all depends. For myself, if I ask a question, I guess I'd rather have the response in my blog... I dunno.

Do you ever struggle with your blogging “voice”?
I do not struggle for ONE minute with my blogging voice! My blogging voice is my same voice as if we're talkin' in person! If you think you KNOW me from reading my blog - you probably do! Now... I don't share EVERYthing on my blog... and I do try to keep my blog up-key. So some people are mistaken by thinking that I am ALWAYS "up" and always "on"... and of course, that is not true for ANYone! But what you DO get from me is all me - it all genuine!

Are there certain types of blogs that attract you?
Yes. I can't tell you what they are... but I know when I hit one! My newest blog friend, Lanny... I literally STUMBLED upon her blog... followed a link, saw a comment, clicked here, clicked there ... suddenly there I was and my first comment to her was "HOW COME I've never read you before? How have I NOT seen your blog before?" She and I just clicked! I do know this... about 90% of my most favorite blogs belong to Christians. But that's not a requirement. I have verrrrrrrry good non-Christian blogging friends. I like a "positive" blog. I like positive attitudes and respect for people and Love! And I think part of the attraction of having blogging friends is that I can pick and choose from such a wiiiiiiiiiiide variety of people who I really DO want to be close friends with. In real life, we are stuck with the people who live and work near us. Those who attend our church and the parents of our children's friends. We rarely get to CHOOSE who we will converse with on a daily basis. We take life as it comes. But in the blog world, we have more control. We can be more choosy. We can surround ourselves with ONLY those who's company we REALLY REALLY enjoy!!! What a wonderful thing!!!

Are there certain types of blogs that repel you?
Absolutely!!! The exact opposite of what I just spoke of. If a blog is focused on negativity... people bashing, whining, complaining, profanity ... Well - it's cyberspace. We all have a right to say whatever we want. But we also all have the choice NOT to visit blogs that offend us. 'Nuff said.

What time of day do you usually blog?
La la la la la... alllllllllllllll day ... every day.... la la la la la! I definitely blog with my coffee... and I definitely blog the night away! In between I have to live a life so I have something to blog about! Right?

Do your family and friends know about your blog?
They DO!

Do they read it?
Well... Krysti has been the last few days... I wonder how long that will last! The others? NO! I have to BEG them to read my blog!

Do they mind if you mention them?
LOL! I've never asked them! I don't really talk that much ABOUT them, do I? But since I mostly keep everything in a positive light I don't think they mind. I don't really share their "personal" stuff. Mostly what you guys hear about them is just in the family outting type things. I've shared excitement over some of their accomplishments! They wouldn't mind that! When trouble hits, I usually just ask for prayers and don't give much in the way of details... God knows what you're prayin' for -- you don't need to!

Do they suggest posts for it?
I think Krysti has suggested something once or twice. Hehehe... they don't so much "suggest" it as they "accept it" ... as in Oh geez... Mom's gonna blog this...

Two! Two! Two posts in One!

In Which We Speak Of Eggs and Birthdays...

Saturday was a Luz & Nana day. It was also Pop-Pops birthday! Mom & I went and picked Luz up and we headed to the PARTY store! We (Luz) selected all the hats and decorations that we were going to need to properly party Pop-Pop. (well... I admit, I did steer her away from the Dora aisle!) Then we got his balloons, and headed to the cake mix aisle at the "little store". Luz kept insisting that she didn't want to help me make a cake and I said that was fine -- but in the end, she did want to help me make a cake. And THAT is what this post is really about. Because... I learned something this day. I learned that as parents (and grandparents too perhaps?) we often think children are not capable of doing "certain things"... but as we prepared to make our cake, Luz said "I want to break the eggs!" ... and remembering that very first little picture I was given of her... back before she was MY granddaughter... the one of her ever so gently holding that little egg in her hand... well... I said... "of course, Baby! Of course you get to break the eggs!" And look!

She checks it out...

... taps gently...
...looks for a crack...
... opens it up...... and into the bowl!

... Got some whites on the fingers - but saved the shell!
Baby Girl broke ALL THREE eggs and did a PERFECT job of it!!! Not ONE piece of eggshell did she drop! (and no broken yolks either!) Was this Nana AMAZED!? Darn tootin'! Amazed that someone back in her "other" culture had taken the time to TEACH a 3 year old HOW to crack an egg! Our little Luz is the best darned egg cracker the world has EVER known! LOL! ... well... okay... I might be a weeeee bit prejudiced there... but... she's GOOD!

And yes ... of course she mixed it up too!

And cleaned it up!

Of course, no party is complete without balloons -- and Krysti was in charge of "entertainment" - so she was making balloon "things".

She started off with a flower!

Then she made Luz a Party Hat....

... but was NOT thrilled when Luz wanted it to be a
FOOTBALL HELMET! lol!

Dinner Time!

Always FUN with my crazy bunch!
(looks like an add for I Can't Believe It's Not Butter, huh?)

And then FINALLY...
.... we get to the
CAKE!!!
And PopPop ENJOYED it!!!

Happy BIRTHDAY old man!!!
